How can that bumbling baffoon still be in a job? How does he not have the guts to fully apologise, instead of that well rehearsed speech that avoided the crucial word sorry, and more to the point why is he not in Iran trying to speak directly to the Iranian government?

But boris hasn't even met her family, met her mp. How dare he comment like this.

200 MPs have signed for him to do something. Yet he's not even spoken to her family.
But he feels qualified to talk about her like this.

That's what makes him a fool

MassDebate · 10/11/2017 09:12

Fekko the grandparents are of course doing what they can to give Gabriella a good life. However, their house is under constant surveillance and they face threats and intimidation daily. Gabriella has to wear a hood to go through the prison to visit her mother, where she has short visits once a week. She hasn't seen her father for 18 months and has forgotten how to speak English. That poor baby is being well cared for but let's not minimise the impact on her.

Those who are asking what more Boris can do would do well to read the statement put out by Redress here

ChoccyJules · 10/11/2017 09:22

I never understood why TM gave BJ the Foreign Office anyway. Especially after all the shilly-shallying about he did on Brexit. Who in their right mind would want him representing us abroad? Either he has something big on her or someone else is behind it all, these puppet masters we hear about. He can seemingly do no wrong and it's so starkly in contrast to the media following a plane landing with PP on it, off to get the sack (resign...).
TM should forget her powerhungriness and summon up a bit of human decency, which she claimed to have when she started the job and get in touch with Iran at a high level, sacking BJ as she does so.

DB22 · 10/11/2017 09:32

IMO, it's a bit of sweet justice that he has the initials BJ.

Thank you for the link MassDebate. I wonder if there is a petition aimed at Boris Johnson to act on the advice on Redress.

The Iranian government doesn’t really care about the truth here. They have decided she’s a spy without any evidence, and have latched onto Boris’ comments because of mounting international pressure to release her. The truth is that Nazanin is an Iranian citizen and as Iran doesn’t recognise dual citizenship, Britain has no authority in freeing her. THIS is the danger of having dual citizenship - it’s all nice when things go right, but does mean you have virtually no rights when the shit hits the fan.

TSSDNCOP · 10/11/2017 10:05

Nazanin

I'm going to preface this by saying I believe Johnsons comment was inexcusable and it is an outrage that the Iranians are behaving in this manner.

Now here's the but...Nazanin is a dual citizen Iranian that works for Reuters which is a news agency. She has family in Iran and must therefore be familiar with the regime. I can't fathom why she thought she would not be a risk during a visit and why she would take her daughter. She's clearly an intelligent person, I just can't work that out in my mind. I'd maybe have gone to see my parents, no way would I have taken a child.

pinkingshears · 10/11/2017 10:07

BJ is a truly disgusting human being.
He is not in the least incompetent.
He is a sociopath, however, imo.

MassDebate · 10/11/2017 10:12

TSSDNCOP Nazanin works for the Thomson Reuters Foundation (a charity), not Reuters the news agency. She took her daughter to see her grandparents. She had travelled freely to Iran in the past and the Iranian authorities knew full well her occupation. She is a proud Iranian who loved her home country - there was no reason for her to believe she or her daughter were in danger as she has done nothing wrong. In hindsight that was naive, but her situation (as a mother travelling with a young child) was unprecedented.

kali110 · 10/11/2017 10:16

I follpwed the petition when this first started, however can someone please tell me what she was supposed to have done? I could never work it out!

JonSnowsWife · 10/11/2017 10:18

He has made it worse. New charges were brought against her as a direct result of what he'd said, because they're now all convinced she's a spy too apparently Confused

The man is a complete idiot.

disahsterdahling · 10/11/2017 10:18

How can that bumbling baffoon still be in a job

Don't know. It's quite astonishing.

JonSnowsWife · 10/11/2017 10:20

I never understood why TM gave BJ the Foreign Office anyway

She gave it him ws she needed to give him something. BJ and his cronies are the very fabric that is keeping her in 'power' (I use that term loosely).

Once their support has gone she's political toast.

DB22 · 10/11/2017 10:25

kali I think she was charged with spying essentially and something along the lines of plotting to bring down the state. From what I gather, much of the problem is that she has not had a fair trial, with much of it done behind closed doors so nothing is transparent.

GrockleBocs · 10/11/2017 10:25

Boris is clever but he's also lazy and believes he's cleverer than everyone else. He's done very well for himself with very little effort. I imagine he has charisma and may be very charming.
I think the referendum showed how shallow, but possibly astute, his political convictions are. I don't think he has much support in Westminster and I don't think he's a credible leadership candidate any more but he would be a pain in the arse, muttering in corners to the press, going off plan etc to any leader. Keeping him away from the HoP limits that.
It's incredibly irresponsible to have commented on this case without the utmost care and caution. I hope he's deselected somehow.

WillowWeeping · 10/11/2017 10:27

I wonder why shifty has decided to lie and say she isn't British?

Shifty I hardly lying Confused

The fact is that whilst she can avail of a British citizenship in Britain she cannot in Iran because Iran do not recognise the same.

This is fairly well established position and as an Iranian she'd know that when travelling there.

It's a terrible position for her whole family

DB22 · 10/11/2017 10:29

His ineptitude has been hiding in plain sight, camaflaged by the bumbling public school boy act the British civil service love so very much. It's embarrassing for us all.

OP posts:
DB22 · 10/11/2017 10:31

I disagree that Boris is clever. He's privelleged a different he uses it to his advantage to plays his card well with the act he portrays. But if he were clever he wouldn't have made such a monumental fuck up.

OP posts:
DB22 · 10/11/2017 10:32

No idea what happened there, meant to say he is privelleged, which he has used to his advantage

OP posts:
NovemberBlues · 10/11/2017 10:35

whatever the ins and outs of this - he has made a huge blunder and he needs to put the record straight.

He should be appealing to the clemency of the Iranian government for his blunder. Apologizing profusely and as the DH said go to Iran with him and stand with him.

Funny how people are raving at Boris though and not the actual dreadful regime in place there that is heinously punishing women.

JonSnowsWife · 10/11/2017 10:46

Boris is clever but he's also lazy and believes he's cleverer than everyone else

He really isn't. Anyone who thinks those words were in any way going to help her, whilst being in a position of Foreign Secretary, is bloody stupid at best.

JonSnowsWife · 10/11/2017 10:48

Funny how people are raving at Boris though and not the actual dreadful regime in place there that is heinously punishing women

It is possible to be cross at both. I know I am.

GrockleBocs · 10/11/2017 11:07

When I say clever, I mean clever. Not brilliantly clever or remarkably clever. And that's my point I think he didn't put any effort into thinking what would or wouldn't help. He's got away with speaking off the cuff for years and it just doesn't cut it in a sensitive situation like this.
I agree though that it's possible to be cross about two things at once.

Humpsfor20yards · 10/11/2017 11:50

Shifty thinks she's an Iranian citizen and it's crazy to suggest the UK "does" something while she's in her home country.

This is a pretty niche view then. Even stupid-o Boris doesn't think that.

brasty · 10/11/2017 11:58

When he was being interviewed about this, he was smiling, almost grinning.
