How can that bumbling baffoon still be in a job? How does he not have the guts to fully apologise, instead of that well rehearsed speech that avoided the crucial word sorry, and more to the point why is he not in Iran trying to speak directly to the Iranian government?

Cautiously hopeful that things seem to be moving in the right direction. the Foreign Secretary has retracted his earlier statement, apologised for the distress caused and is (finally) meeting N's husband on Wednesday. He is being cagey about whether N is going to be afforded diplomatic protection.

ExPresidents · 13/11/2017 17:01

Emily I so hope they give her diplomatic protection and things finally start moving.

The only silver lining to this ridiculous episode is that finally her case is becoming more high profile and the media are starting to put some pressure on politicians. Fingers crossed it sees some results.

mtpaektu I don't see how you can be surprised that, having been deleted once, you were deleted again for repeating exactly the same nonsense.

It's not an exaggeration to say that people persisting in false suggestions about her activities in Iran are putting her life at risk. It shouldn't be condoned anywhere.

Fekko · 13/11/2017 17:30

Words can be repeated and taken out of context - and seen as 'evidence'. If this was about you or someone you knew, you would want careless and rash comments deleted.

www.gov.uk/dual-citizenship 'As a dual national you can’t get diplomatic help from the British government when you are in the other country where you hold citizenship.

For example, if you hold both British and Chinese citizenship you can’t get diplomatic help from the UK when you’re in China.'

The full statement from Justin Trudeau re Homa Hoodfar.

“Canadians are relieved that Dr. Hoodfar has been released from jail and will soon be reunited with her family, friends and colleagues.

“The Government of Canada has been actively and constructively engaged at the highest levels in Dr. Hoodfar’s case – since her ordeal began – working for her release and return to Canada.

“Our officials have also been providing consular assistance to her family and will continue to do so until their loved one has arrived home safely.

“In the absence of diplomatic representation of its own in Iran, Canada worked closely with others who were instrumental in helping secure Dr. Hoodfar’s release – most notably Oman, Italy and Switzerland. I would like to extend our sincerest appreciation for their support.

“I would also like to recognize the cooperation of those Iranian authorities who facilitated her release and repatriation. They understand that cases like these impede more productive relations.

“We ask all to respect the family’s wish for privacy at this time.”

There is no reason whatsoever why Britain should not be trying to help bring Nazanin home. She lives here, she works here, she is married to a British citizen. They may not be obliged to help but they should be.

I have also mentioned several times that her daughter IS a British national, she does not have dual nationality. Yet her passport was confiscated for months on end and nothing was done. There was no dual nationality excuse in that case but our government made no efforts to reunite that young and vulnerable British citizen with either of her parents.

I heard SusannahL was visiting mumsnet as she wishes to derail threads and possibly post about poo.
I mean, I have absolutely zero evidence that this is true but it hasn’t been proved she wasn’t, beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Yes, I'd be interested to hear whether all the waah she's Iranian don't interfere brigade feel the same about Nazanin's daughter. Who is not an Iranian citizen, because Iranian nationality law doesn't allow a child born to an Iranian mother and non-Iranian father outside Iran to acquire citizenship.

HebeMumsnet · 13/11/2017 21:49

Evening folks. Sorry if we're being a little more trigger happy with the delete button than usual here. We just want to make sure we don't leave up any kind of speculation that could be potentially harmful to this case. Hope you all understand.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt: why would MN not go near such a campaign? They have huge political influence. Alarming if true!

I have contributed to the change.org petition financially. But I don’t think it’s at all effective for Nazanin to just throw a token amount of money at the problem as a bit of a bone to one’s conscience. Only unrelenting pressure from a group with significant political clout and mothers’ interests at heart will do the trick. That’s not Parliament, by the way. This mother is running out of time. Mumsnet please respond!!!!

SpaceOpera · 14/11/2017 11:42

I would like to correct one thing I said above. Please do carry on throwing money (however token) at the Change.org petition - I am sure Richard Ratcliffe needs money for the long-haul fight. I feel strongly that MN should have a position on this case and pressure our government in the way that Richard thinks best. MN should offer help in any way that he sees fit; he should of course lead with tactics and strategy so as not to hurt her case. We mothers should stand against a mother being used as a political pawn by being deprived of her family, never mind how powerful the political players are. As for the politician-bashing, let’s only do it if it helps bring her home.

Itsgonnabeacoldone · 14/11/2017 11:49

Does MN really have that much influence? It's just a message board, not really a media company and the articles it puts out aren't anything new or unique.

Sausagesandroses · 14/11/2017 23:30

It has been obvious for some time that Iran runs its foreign policy on the basis of hostage taking, and that she is therefore yet another person imprisoned exactly on the basis of her links to this country and for no other reason. It is therefore absolutely the duty of our government to do everything they can to free this innocent woman and end this heartbreaking ordeal for her and her family.

SpaceOpera · 15/11/2017 05:43

Itsgonnabeacoldone: MN is not a corporate or a media agency, absolutely. It’s a collection of mainly mothers, the majority of whom I presume have young children. That’s why the government pays attention. Head teachers and governments know that voting stances harden at the school gate - mothers are a powerful vote bank. Unlike corporates, they can’t be bribed or bullied by the government. No coincidence that head teachers targeted parents before the summer with letters asking for donations to cover funding cuts, and hey presto, new funding was found over the summer. I’m not saying MN should go public right away but all that tea and biscuits with politicians visiting MN HQ before the election must count for something. They should reach out to Richard and offer to help. And then tell the media they’re concerned and helping.

WinnieTheW0rm · 15/11/2017 06:10

MN is a corporate entity.

And I don't think that the Government takes much notice. The reputation was quite different in about 2010, when the demographic of MN was also different.

Now it's clear that it's unrepresentative (the dominant mood has been consistently with the losing side in recent elections) and the big political names aren't coming on for webchats any more - which shows MN is no longer an audience to be courted.

Itsgonnabeacoldone · 15/11/2017 07:32

MN is just a message board, anyone could set up similar in an hour. It does other things but let's be honest no one uses them. The people using the message board are the only thing unique.

When it does Facebook live video events with big names like Jamie Oliver it gets a few hundred viewers. It's just not worth people giving it attention for the small audience.

Lidl prices have gone up and cadburys chocolate has been made cheap and nasty while both companies have paid MN over £100'000 to sell on data and do native advertising. Yet they still have had a blatant disregard for securing peoples data and make feeble jokes about putting 50p in the metre when things go wrong.

Fekko · 15/11/2017 14:05

Looks like Boris is getting off his backside.

MissEliza · 15/11/2017 18:55

I’m confused by what I’ve read here. The news are saying that Nazanin has been receiving consular assistance but posters are saying as a dual national she won’t receive consular assistance. Also can someone confirm where her child is?

Fekko · 15/11/2017 18:58

Their daughter is staying with her parents in Iran. She has dual nationality but Iran does not recognise this. Boris seems to be suggesting her being given some sort of diplomatic 'status' and asking for release on humanitarian grounds.

fartyghost · 15/11/2017 19:07

Their daughter is, from what I can tell, in Iran still because the family decided that it would be awful for Nazanin to have her daughter back in England. She's said to be having English lessons at her nursery.

MissEliza · 15/11/2017 19:20

So the daughter can leave? I’d want her out of that fucked up country ASAP.

JamesBlonde1 · 15/11/2017 19:27

I would too Miss. Their regime is so at odds with our culture and diplomatic process I’m amazed we manage to share the same planet.
