Sat on a night out with the girls discussing personal hygiene..... I wash twice a week. Some are saying this is too much , some too little ?! Thoughts please ?

Yes I fully appreciate homeless people sadly won’t have access to showering facilities 🙄 I would also suspect they’re not the demographic for a thread on mumsnet talking about personal hygiene in general.

Daily showering habits here, Shower morning and night. Although morning shower is just a really quick all over body wash ( morning showers taken only before work ) night time is a thorough clean. I was sat on bus other day and lady got on and sat behind me ( she was on the raised seat behind me ) and lo & beholds soon as she sat down I got this rancid stinking whiff of what I can only describe as sweaty stinky fanjo/bum smell. I nearly puked 🤢 had to pull my scarf over my nose & mouth to stop me gagging which I think she recognised me doing as I could see her staring at me through the window reflection. To be fair I don’t give a shit re her feelings, she shouldn’t be inflicting that stench on others. I have let’s say ‘ a friend ‘ whom I’ve been to the gym with in the past & she just goes straight home, eats her tea then gets in bed & comes work the next day without shower ... ugh... all the gym germs on her! OP don’t be THAT person that people move away from .... and wash your fanjo daily!

I shower daily, wash hair 3x a week except if I’m ill or occasionally can’t be bothered if I’m not seeing anyone that day.

I’ve known a man who only washed (bath) once a week and he stank.

I knew a girl who washed 1-2 a week and she smelt a bit but not significantly. The worst thing though was that she would wear clothes repeatedly then just hang them on the back of a chair then re-wear. They didn’t get washed often at all. I knew this anyway, but you could tell from looking at it what she was wearing as well. She just didn’t look clean. She had greasy hair for days on end. I’d have expected her to smell more really.

Dontspeaktome · 07/11/2017 00:43

your friends are hinting that you stink and washing twice a week is why.
not being rude op just honest

wellyclad · 07/11/2017 01:05

I had an ex once who showered once a week
Hideous

MrsFoxPlus4 · 07/11/2017 01:16

The phrase “bits and pits” is making me feel sick, but whiles at college we done a block called “personal presentation” and an older lady said she had a flannel wash every morning for her 3 fs (face, fanny & feet) & a bath once a week. I felt Sick 😂

Littlebatcalledlucille · 07/11/2017 01:27

In our house we don't call it 'bits and pit's'
We call it 'a lick and a promise'
And we would have to be pretty desperate! If we we're running late or the gas has gone, IF the gas HAS ran out we have the traveler wash!
Regardless of hot water Twice a day we all wash.
It has to be done

"Try starting with your face next time".

steff13 · 07/11/2017 01:29

In my area it's usually called a whore's bath...

loui5a · 07/11/2017 02:15

Shower at least once a day. Only wash my hair twice a week as per hair stylist instructions. My hair has never been better xx

loui5a · 07/11/2017 02:16

Dry shampoo is magic

Dobopdidoo1 · 07/11/2017 03:13

The best way to use dry shampoo is before bed. Spray it in and let it work overnight. If you use it in the morning you’re left with white hair that takes ages to rub in wasting precious time plus it often looks like you’ve got bits of talc in your hair for half the day.

Back in the 40s when my parents were growing up in working class families they would have a bath in a tub in front of the fire once a week in shared water. They would not have enough pants to wear clean ones everyday. It was more a case of wearing them for a couple of days one way and then turning them inside out for another couple of days. They shower and wear fresh underwear daily now. Times have changed.
I shower daily but sometimes miss a day due to circumstances. I don’t feel great on those days but I don’t worry about it. Hair wash every other day. The thing is the more you wash your hair the more it needs washing. I know someone who washes her hair once a week and it never looks greasy. It also depends on your skin type.
My DH has a skin condition and the more he wets the skin the more aggravated it gets. So he’s reluctant to wash too often as it’s painful.
Also some people have bad BO and some people don’t. It’s down to genetics. I knew a girl who bathed daily but her nethers stank badly regardless even through her clothes. She was just unlucky.

JacquesHammer · 07/11/2017 09:05

To be fair I don’t give a shit re her feelings

Aren't you a peach

Calm33 · 07/11/2017 10:11

I do understand what Apileofballyhoo has written but everything was so different then. I think we have busier lives, everywhere is crowded and in a rush and our clothes tend not to be cotton, linen or silk but man made. I know what I did as a kid and the facilities that we had and the way we lived, bathed once a week but strip washed every night and light wash am. When older showering every day was normal and a bath just once a week to relax in the bubbles and get some peace. My young shower every day, if doing sports then twice and my daughter did not really know how to strip wash until she had an op, when she was little I used to bath them every night. I do feel like many others that twice a week is not enough but I do use unscented soap and tend to use a soap bar with a massage sponge. As for my hair I try to leave it as long as possible as I feel washing out the natural oils is not beneficial so 5 days if not doing sports etc. The girls wash their hair every day and I think that at the same age my hair was in a fair better condition and even today the hairdresser will comment on how good the condition of my hair is - my secret loose the hair dryer and other heated products and all the accessories as much as you can!

InsomniacAnonymous · 07/11/2017 12:55

expatinscotland "Our HA doesn't supply a shower. You have to apply to put one in and do it at your own expense after approval."

Is there a bath? Your above reply was to someone who said "How many people (in the UK) really don’t have a bath or shower these days?"

Babybauble · 08/11/2017 22:18

Does it realky matter if people strip wash, shower, bathe, only do bits and pits etc. If you smell clean and look clean who cares. It's when you smell putrid that's the issue. I personally don't suffer BO, I can use the gym and not shower after and smell absolutely fine, I barely sweat. So it's rediculous for some to come others disgusting etc as they may very well still smell fine. I bath or shower daily, always have but I don't really need to. I like to mostly due to feminine hygiene and my sex life but nobody would be able to tell if I'd been to the gym etc. And no, I'm not deluded as I've asked people who wouldn't lie to me and I've no issues. So some people really can get away with washing less and some need it more as sweat more etc.
