Asking for pasta

More of as ‘is this weird?’ Question really.

I got home on Sunday after a long day out with the kids and realised that we really didn’t have anything that could make a quick dinner for them. We live rurally, the closest place that would have been open is a 40min round trip & we were all too tired and hungry for that.

DS has just started school and I’ve made some really good friends with other mums and we all live within walking distance of each other which is lovely. Anyway, a trio of us have a group chat going and I asked the other mums if either of them had any pasta going spare. One Mum did, we whizzed over to collect it and I had 2 very happy DCs eating cheesy pasta for tea.

I relayed this to DH when he asked about the unfamiliar pasta in the cupboard and he told me that what I had done was really really weird, and I shouldn’t ask people if I could borrow pasta. Personally I don’t see the issue, but maybe I’m missing something?

As long as you give them a new bag of pasta back I don’t see the issue either!

I don't see the problem with it either! Maybe your dh is the type of person who would never ask anyone else for help and would rather starve than ask a friend for help! I'd lend pasta to any friend who asked!!

I don’t think it’s weird. It’s nice to have friends that you can ask for stuff like this, and repay the favour in their moment of need!

New pasta returned on Mondays pm school run.

Other Mum thought it was hilarious frankly!

I don't think it's weird. I would and have happily knocked on a neighbours door and asked if they had an onion going spare because I'd started dinner then realised I'd forgotten to buy one.

Of course you can ask for pasta, or an onion or a glass of milk or whatever.
Ps, my h would also starve than ask. That is weird.

Doesn't sound odd to me, I'm more surprised about noticing 'unfamiliar pasta' in a cupboard, DH wouldn't ever ever notice something like that Grin

Weirdly DH said it would have been fine to ask the next door neighbour (they weren’t in), but not my new Mum friends Confused

Not at all, we're 20 minutes from shops and people are always asking neighbours/swapping things etc.

Perfectly normal. I nip round to the neighbours for stuff occasionally, what's the difference?

It was in a food bag sooper, and he was cooking it for dinner on Monday. No chance of him noticing otherwise!

They're neighbours/friends so why not ask. We did the age-old asking a neighbour for sugar the other month. long story short, dh dropped the sugar caddy on cups of boiling water, scolded himself, caddy smashed and had shards of pot in the sugar and he was on his way to work and needed sugar to make his flask of tea drinkable. Anyway, we went and asked if we could borrow a few tsp of sugar and she gave us a whole bag of the stuff. replaced it when we went shopping next and laughed about it (dh was fine)

Actually it's these little things I love about close-by friends, not big gestures of friendship but everyday helpfulness.

Haha, I've also heard that some people wouldn't ask for directions when lost.....
No it's not weird. I'd be happy to help if someone asked me for pasta.

I am also amazed that your dh noticed an unfamiliar pack of pasta!!
I don't think it is weird to ask a friend. We live rurally too but I would never not have pasta in the house!

Same here, writinghome, but I'm always buying the stuff, only to go home and find a load stored away! Blush Happily available to share to pasta-less neighbours.

Not weird at all, I asked my neighbour for milk, I forgot to get some on the way home and realised there was non when I got home, I was dying for a Brew so asked the neighbour, I gave them a cup and said just enough for a cup of tea and they filled it up and said, "Incase you want more than one cup Grin"

itusedtobeverydifferent that’s usually me! I buy pasta all of the time and end up with bags of the stuff. I made a conscious decision a while back to stop overbuying pasta, clearly that backfired!
