Asking for pasta

More of as ‘is this weird?’ Question really.

I got home on Sunday after a long day out with the kids and realised that we really didn’t have anything that could make a quick dinner for them. We live rurally, the closest place that would have been open is a 40min round trip & we were all too tired and hungry for that.

DS has just started school and I’ve made some really good friends with other mums and we all live within walking distance of each other which is lovely. Anyway, a trio of us have a group chat going and I asked the other mums if either of them had any pasta going spare. One Mum did, we whizzed over to collect it and I had 2 very happy DCs eating cheesy pasta for tea.

I relayed this to DH when he asked about the unfamiliar pasta in the cupboard and he told me that what I had done was really really weird, and I shouldn’t ask people if I could borrow pasta. Personally I don’t see the issue, but maybe I’m missing something?

I don't see an issue with asking but it is weird that it came to that.

I don't understand why you don't just have some tins in the cupboard or some stuff in the freezer for emergencies if you live that far from a shop. Or just plan ahead so you don't run out of food.

I'm with DH. If it has been agreed that you are responsible for buying food, you are doing a shit job of it. It is no way to live that if your friends don't check their phone, the kids don't eat or you have to make an unnecessary 40min trip, using all that fuel just for the sake of a few pasta sheets. Organise your life better.

Speechless !- how utterly bizarre - how did you write that drivel and then not instantly delete it before you pressed send ? - Organize your mind better.

Kurrikurri you sre ace!

It's not weird at all to borrow from a neighbour. However imo it's weird to borrow dry pasta because it's a non perishable basic that most people wouldn't run out of. Also essential for a meal so seems as if you can't feed your own family somehow.

Stuff we borrow / have borrowed - fairy cake cases for emergency home ec, eggs etc

clarehhh · 14/10/2017 08:08

Agree not weird I have 2 neighbours I do that with and them to me even though a Tesco late night garage, pretty near and we all have a car usually when we are in middle of a recipe and find have no herbs, black treacle, cinnamon , eggs etc.In fact with black treacle my neighbour and I decided no point in us both having just for Christmas cake.We live in a wealthy area, so not weird just neighbourly. We also give each other fridge remains before going away rather than binning it.

Just popped to my neighbour to borrow some cat food. It was that or drive 3 miles to the nearest shop in my pyjamas.

MummySparkle · 14/10/2017 09:23

You know what WineBottle? Yes I am doing a shit job of shopping / food at the moment. You have no idea what I am juggling with family, kids, school, work & illness. Frankly having a fun day out with the kids was my number one priority on Sunday, and we did.

Bertrand what are you talking about? Clearly you don't love your cats enough Bertrand and obviously should not have pets if you can't plan well enough to have food or are not even prepare to change into a pair of jeans and drive to the shop. Wink

Jeez people, is it totally possible to run out of staples! You may have had unexpected guests, a fewmore children to feed after a playdate etc

therealpippi · 14/10/2017 09:33

Mummy do not feel you have to justify yourself. At all. Even without themegajuggling it would be perfectly normal to forget stuff and to not be bother. Don't be put off and keep having this it'll make up for a lively community and an easier life.
Life is not the army ffs!

But the classic thing to borrow is a cup of sugar which is also a storecupboard staple. You don't go round asking to borrow a 4-pack of waitrose chocolate eclairs, because you don't need them. But if you run out of a basic item, you do need it.

I often run out of pasta because my DC love it and I don't have endless cupboard space to keep huge supplies. Lucky for me I live 1 minute from a shop. I can totally understand OP's situation.

Just picturing actual staples.

therealpippi · 14/10/2017 10:54

Apologies my writing is awful without glasses. I meant to say "it is totally possible to run out of".

GColdtimer · 15/10/2017 15:26

@Winebottle seriously? Few things on MN leave me gobsmacked these days but that just did.

OP please ignore those few posters who clearly have perfect lives. . Flowers
