Dd 14, back to school and new rule females pupils are not to pull up tights in front of male teachers

Dd 14 had her first assembly of the year this morning, and head mistress / principle has a list of new rules, one including female students are banned from pulling up/ adjusting their 60 denier tights in front of male teachers as she feels this is inappropriate and it must be done in private in bathrooms. Surely this is crazy?

I'm not sure wtf is being implied here. Is she saying that none of the male teachers can be trusted around girls in tights??

Maybe the suggestion is that male teachers don't want to see your DD's knickers

BoneyBackJefferson couldn't agree more. Funny how many people seem to think their daughters are irresistible. I imagine working with 11 to 18 year olds everyday makes them very resistible to most adults. Having said that I watched Educating Greater Manchester last night and I thought some of the kids on that were lovely, still didn't want to see their underpants or knickers.

This so beside the point but fuckit.

I blame this thread for my dream last night where I was in front of a class and had to repeatedly hitch up my baggy dog-walking trousers because the tie kept coming loose. Universal disapproving looks, though my dream self found it funny.

I think the point is that it was specified that tights couldn't be hoiked around male teachers.

I'm fairly sure that the female teachers (and most of the students) wouldn't want to see anyone's knickers either so a general 'no underwear on display at any time' rule would have been better.

The problem is that the information is third hand.

Most head teachers would know not to word it in this way as they should know what the response is going to be. (doesn't mean that some don't do it)

Male teachers are an easy excuse for this type of rule, it doesn't mean that they have complained, I suspect most have just looked away.

In short if it was said in this way its badly worded, but still puts a valid point across. Its a shame that so many people overlook the point being made to argue "male teachers" etc.

As a female teacher I'd really rather girls in my class didn't hoick their skirt right up to sort their tights out either.

It does happen, no one is complaining about discrete smoothing of tights below the knee. It's much easier for me as a woman old enough to be their mum to say to them that it's not appropriate.

My younger male colleagues are not perverts, they just don't want to be put in an uncomfortable situation where if they say something they shouldn't be looking and if they don't say anything they are condoning it.

The majority of girls already know it isn't appropriate, the message is for those few who think it's funny or who really don't know better.

Fuck me.

a) that's not what anyone here is saying
b) what a vile thing to say about children

I don't think female teachers want to see it either to be honest. The problem here for me is that it seems to be male teachers that are being singled out when it should be that all teachers find it inappropriate.

Literally no one has said that and it's pretty disgusting that you'd jump to that conclusion.

I think the suggestion that all male teachers are perverts and can't control themselves if they see a child pulling her skirt up is actually really disrespectful and all the male teachers I know would be totally uninterested and just want them to behave. Accusing male teachers of being perverts or the Head of thinking that is pretty disgusting and many of you seem to think that was what she meant.

As has been pointed out we have the third hand story that this is exactly what the Head said, not likely to be accurate. I can tell you from 20 years dealing with statements about crimes that you can take a dozen statements and no two of them will tell exactly the same story, not people lying but people just don't remember these things exactly, look up thread at the teacher who was supposed to have said parents didn't turn up for parents evening because they were all out drinking, an element of truth but no the exact story.

Male teachers aren't all dying to get a glimpse of a teenagers thighs or backside. Just grow up and accept that a. no one is interested in looking at these girls and b. support the school or accept that these girls won't know how to behave in the work place in a few years.

Off thread but I think hoik is my new favourite word

Personally I wear stockingsand suspenders to avoid the tights falling down issue, would this be more acceptable (I certainly find it much more comfortable than wearing tights)

Pink I dread the thought of teenagers in stockings and suspenders - getting an eyeful of thong as they girls walk upstairs in front of me is bad enough!

Maybe the regulation skirts just need to cover more. Schools do seem to favour styles which are like knee length PE wrap round skirts. Below the knee is much more practical in terms of proper arse coverage.

I can't think of any proper occupational uniforms with such flimsy skirts.

Or where so many of the staff role the skirts up no matter what the style.

Rolled up skirts can be detected and the wearer told to go and roll them down. A note can be made on the behaviour log.

I didn't used to roll my skirt at school, I thought it made the waist band look totally naff and bulky,

But that brings us back to one of the points in the thread,

Namely the 'why are you looking, perv' response.

Same as tucking shirts in isn't it? The waist is quite an innocuous area to notice.

Report
BoneyBackJefferson · 02/09/2017 11:37

Not really.

Why?

Report
ponderingprobably · 02/09/2017 11:41

Many schools have logos on skirt waistbands for this reason.

Report
BoneyBackJefferson · 02/09/2017 12:18

because an un-tucked shirt doesn't show legs or underwear. It also doesn't get the same response when asked to tuck them in.

Report
ponderingprobably · 02/09/2017 12:25

Rolled over waistbands don't show underwear. The skirt being shortened might. But if the waistband was addressed, it does not involve looking at legs or underwear for that matter! It involves noticing a rolled over waistband. Rather obvious with a tucked in shirt.

Really, what is your problem, Boney? If you teach, surely you have to deal with this stuff all the time. Par for the course. It is part of the job - always has been.
