Smoking vs Vaping

AIBU to find gaping more annoying than smoking? I know that a lot of people use it to quit smoking but then they just see to get hooked on vaping instead. On top of it they seem less ashamed than smokers when walking around blowing clouds of vapor all over the place. I find both habits disgusting and antisocial but most people seem to dislike smoking more. Am I the only one?

Smoking (and passive smoking) cause cancer.

YABU.

Jammydodger81 · 25/08/2017 11:57

I'm not seeing why vapers should be ashamed? No more than anyone who has eaten garlic, drunk a coffee, wearing perfume etc. All they are doing is spreading a smell, not cancerous cigarette smoke like smokers.

Lots of people are hooked on things OP, drinking, painkillers, gambling, eating, drinking coke, shopping etc. I'd say vaping is a pretty harmless habit to have!

QueenOfVipers · 25/08/2017 12:05

Why shouldnt they be less ashamed?

It doesn't contain known carcinogens, doesn't smell anywhere near as bad, is 95% safer than smoking (check out public health England for full info).
It's not banned by law in most places.
It's cheaper and cleaner (no more bad smells clinging to you, yellow fingers etc).

QueenOfVipers · 25/08/2017 12:07

That's not to say it's without risk etc, but it's far far far safer than smoking!
The only health risk I've heard of when vaping is popcorn lung which is only a risk with fluids that contain glycerine and by far not all of them do.
Compared to the millions if not billions of lives claimed by smoking it's pretty tame. YABU.

I find gaping very annoying, vaping doesn't bother me.

BoneyBackJefferson · 25/08/2017 12:10

Some research in to vaping is showing that it isn't as good for you as it is being made out to be.

How accurate this research is remains to be seen.

HungerOfThePine · 25/08/2017 12:11

I can smell cigarette smoke from a good few paces away in the street or as soon as I walk into someone's house, it's not nice.

I've smoked on and off for the past year and each time I've hated myself as it's reeks and I feel ill pretty quick, vaping is much cleaner and cheaper. Seeing a serious case of copd has scared me for life away from smoking.

People should always be conscious of those they are sharing a space with, be it music, eating, vaping or smoking and more.

Polter · 25/08/2017 12:13

I'm not ashamed of vaping at all, it was the one thing that got me off fags after smoking for 28 years, so that feels pretty celebratory to me.

Popcorn lung is a red herring. The risky ingredient was used in some vaping liquids as a flavouring but is in far higher concentrations in tobacco... Glycerine is not related to popcorn lung at all.

Pinklady301 · 25/08/2017 12:14

I have been vaping for the last month. I have to admit i vape a lot more than I smoke, it is quite addictive and I feel like I want to puff on it all day long. I hope in time I can reduce the nigotine strength and eventually quite. I try and be considerate though and not blow smoke in anyone's face.
I think if it helps anyone give up smoking, which is very hard, good for them :)

GeillisTheWitch · 25/08/2017 12:16

Well, if you expect people to act ashamed for doing a perfectly legal and reasonable activity then you're going to be regularly disappointed aren't you? The world doesn't dance to your tune, get over it.

ethelfleda · 25/08/2017 12:18

Another smoking/vaping thread? That's the third one I've seen on the go today!
YABU, by the way.

maras2 · 25/08/2017 12:23

< calms down enough to slink off and Google >

PencilsInSpace · 25/08/2017 12:24

On top of it they seem less ashamed than smokers

And that's what you really hate isn't it? Grin

You do know that the smoking ban wasn't brought in because people found smoking 'annoying' or antisocial' don't you?

PencilsInSpace · 25/08/2017 12:26

'popcorn lung' is a load of hooey.

CaptWentworth · 25/08/2017 12:31

I know a consultant in respiratory medicine who's never heard of popcorn lung Grin

QueenOfVipers · 25/08/2017 12:32

Sorry if it's incorrect. I read about it a while back - it didn't stop me baking but I now avoid fluids with it in.
It's the only vaping related issue I've heard of, that's all

QueenOfVipers · 25/08/2017 12:32

Baking? VAPING

StickThatInYourPipe · 25/08/2017 12:34

Lol queen ain't one letting a bit of popcorn lung getting in the way of my Victoria sponge!

TheNaze73 · 25/08/2017 12:34

AIBU to find gaping more annoying than smoking?

If you're into gaping, you should be on the sex board Grin

YANBU though.

QueenOfVipers · 25/08/2017 12:34

It's actually diacetyl you should(maybe) avoid. Not glycerin.
I have no idea where I got glycerin from.
I'll slink off to the rock I crawled out from under now Blush Blush Blush

QueenOfVipers · 25/08/2017 12:35

Stick 😂😂 Grin

BlurryFace · 25/08/2017 12:41

Less ashamed, lol I am not ashamed of my smoking you are probably just noticing the vapers from further away as some of their kits emit way more vapor than cigarettes do smoke.

Esssa · 25/08/2017 12:47

I've never smoked but I do vape. Now before I get jumped on for wanting to look trendy or being stupid or something let me explain.

I use a vaporiser for medicinal reasons. My liquid doesn't contain nicotine but does contain cbd. I'm sure some will think this is worse than smoking but it helps me so I'll continue while ever it does and is legal to do so. I've never smoked cigarettes and I've never smoked cannabis either. I feel ashamed and embarrassed in some ways of being seen out and about with a cloud around me, tho it dissappears to leave no trace at all very quickly. I have to use smoking shelters when out in certain places which subjects me to that awful stale smell and of course the cigarette related chemicals that I've never been so close to in my life. They are grim places.

But I vape so I quietly put up with it as the relief I get is worth the humiliation of being treated like a smoker. I'm on 20 prescription only pills a day at the moment and still need the assistance of the cbd to help me cope. The beauty of it is I can use it when I need it and not when I don't, unlike a lot of my medication which needs weaning off during better health patches.

I'm happy to vape in my car and house knowing it won't yellow the wallpaper or leave a smell behind. It just doesn't with what I vape. I can't speak for liquid containing nicotine though, that may be different.

Leeela · 25/08/2017 12:51

YANBU. Vaping creates such a massive bubble of vape in the air around the people, it's not nice. Hearing now that it is much less dangerous than smoking health-wise, I still despise smokers more as they're creating health risks for everyone around them and it's so hard to avoid sometimes, SO MANY people seem to smoke everywhere. But the vaping is still disgusting too.

specialsubject · 25/08/2017 13:25

Vaping is much less stinky than smoking so fine with me, such a relief when the big cloud from the silly sucky stick hardly smells.

It is a choice to smoke.
