Smoking vs Vaping

AIBU to find gaping more annoying than smoking? I know that a lot of people use it to quit smoking but then they just see to get hooked on vaping instead. On top of it they seem less ashamed than smokers when walking around blowing clouds of vapor all over the place. I find both habits disgusting and antisocial but most people seem to dislike smoking more. Am I the only one?

I smoked for more than twenty years and gave up when I found out I was pregnant with my eldest. I stayed off nicotine entirely for seventeen years and then started to share my eldest's e-cig during a period of intense stress.

Soon, I was addicted to nicotine again and vaped happily and frequently. I work from home as well, so I could vape all day if I wanted to.

However, after a few months, my chest began to feel tight. My mouth and tongue was sore and my lungs hurt.

Perhaps I was vaping too much, but the symptoms worried me. I have now stopped vaping for nearly three weeks and my chest is much clearer and the pains have gone. However, I still crave nicotine.

In my opinion, inhaling warm, aromatic vapours into your lungs is not healthy. Vaping juice is poisonous and if you have ever accidentally tasted some, you can sense how acrid it is.

I know it is probably much less harmful than smoking, but I am sure that in a few years time we will know more about the true health dangers of dangers.

I wish someone could really convince me that vaping was totally harmless, but nothing that is harmless can produce the symptoms I experienced.

Pencils...."we must continue to study the long term effects"...that's enough evidence for me that they don't know what they are talking about...yet

That's just evidence that PH are doing their job. They continue to study the long term effects of all sorts of things, many of which have been around for centuries.
---------
The estimate that e-cigarette use is around 95% safer than smoking is based on the facts that:

- the constituents of cigarette smoke that harm health – including carcinogens – are either absent in e-cigarette vapour or, if present, they are mostly at levels much below 5% of smoking doses (mostly below 1% and far below safety limits for occupational exposure)

- the main chemicals present in e-cigarettes only have not been associated with any serious risk

Our review aimed to assess whether studies that have recently been widely reported as raising new alarming concerns on the risks of e-cigarettes changed the conclusions of the previous independent review (Britton and Bogdanovica, 2014) and other reassuring reviews.

We concluded that these new studies do not in fact demonstrate substantial new risks and that the previous estimate by an international expert panel (Nutt et al, 2014) endorsed in an expert review (West et al, 2014) that e-cigarette use is around 95% safer than smoking, remains valid as the current best estimate based on the peer-reviewed literature.

Some flavourings and constituents in e-cigarettes may pose risks over the long term. We consider the 5% residual risk to be a cautious estimate allowing for this uncertainty.

Ongoing monitoring is needed to ensure that if any new risks emerge, recommendations to smokers and regulatory requirements are revised accordingly.

On current evidence, there is no doubt that smokers who switch to vaping reduce the risks to their health dramatically.

(from here - third doc down).
----------
Also, note the 5% residual risk is to vapers themselves, not to bystanders.

Whoops - dangers of 'vaping'

TabbyMumz · 01/09/2017 11:33

Titans..."your lad seems a bit dramatic aswell". He's a child for goodness sake. How nasty can you be? He is literally struggling to breath and goes as white as a sheet after walking through this horrible vaping fog.

TabbyMumz · 01/09/2017 11:36

Pencils....you carry on believing it's perfectly harmless if that's what you want to do, but no matter how much rubbish you print out off the internet you won't convince me.

RiseToday · 01/09/2017 11:42

I've been vaping for 4 yrs after quitting a 15 a day habit that i'd had for nearly 20 yrs. I am not ashamed in the slightest nor do I consider it antisocial or toxic towards others.

Having said that, I wouldn't blow a cloud of vapour into someone's face but seeing as it evaporates almost instantly (even the huge cloudy ones) and any smell dissipates with it, I really don't see the problem?

Smoke from a fag versus vapour are just not comparable, with the former being toxic, stinking clouds of filth versus the latter which is really quite inoffensive.

Trb17 · 01/09/2017 11:42

I hate smoking most.

I hate vaping too. But only because I'm betting anything that in years to come they'll find out there are more bad sides to it than we currently know. It's too 'new' to know the long term effects imo and just like cigarettes were once sold as medicinal, I think too we'll discover one day that vaping has consequences too.

I hope I'm proven wrong given how many teens vape in our area.

Unless it's what you want to hear 🙄

Titanz · 01/09/2017 11:44

He is literally struggling to breath and goes as white as a sheet after walking through this horrible vaping fog.

You've name changed then?

If your child is reacting to scented vapour in such a way there's either something wrong with him or he's caught your hysteria and is reacting to how you react.

PencilsInSpace · 01/09/2017 11:45

HarHer you might have done better with a VG based liquid, some people are sensitive to PG.

It's normal to vape a lot more frequently than you would smoke. This doesn't mean you are more addicted. Nicotine is absorbed much slower and more gently from vaping than it is from smoking so vaping tends to be a more little-and-often thing.

The lack of the giant, superfast hit of nicotine to the brain is one of the reasons vaping is far less addictive than smoking - easier to come off and far less likely to get someone hooked in the first place.

NotACleverName · 01/09/2017 11:48

the heat from the steam will inevitably cause a few gene mutations

Hmm

That's quite possibly the most borderline-hysterical, anti-vaping bit of [so far as I can see, science-free] nonsense I've read for a while.

ShotsFired · 01/09/2017 11:51

The visual of people almost non-stop sucking on their little pipes makes me feel a bit ill. It seems worse than actual cigarettes which only last a minute or two. But vapers seem to spend their whole day pulling on it whatever they are doing, and it all just feels so needy and odd.

Orangebird69 · 01/09/2017 11:52

It seems worse than actual cigarettes which only last a minute or two

But it isn't. HTH.

Trb17 · 01/09/2017 11:53

There is no evidence of never smokers taking up vaping. Vapers are almost without exception either ex-smokers or current smokers.

Sadly this is not true. Where I live the high schools have a massive problem that starts in Y6 with kids vaping. Kids who've never smoked saying vaping is fun and safe so thats why they choose to do it. Unscrupulous shops galore selling to underage kids. Reported to council bug nothing done. It's an epidemic around here and speaking to some teachers I know the problem is out of control.

I worry for those kids if in time consequences are discovered.

expatinscotland · 01/09/2017 11:54

Some people are serious drama llamas.

7Days · 01/09/2017 11:57

Best not do it then shots.

In other irrelevant opinions about strangers I really don't like red nail polish on people toe nails!
It looks like blood.

7Days · 01/09/2017 12:00

Round here teens drink buckfast and do sex on each other in fields.
No interest in wholesome pursuits like bible study, community service or bracing runs in the early orning rain.

ShotsFired · 01/09/2017 12:01

Me: It seems worse than actual cigarettes which only last a minute or two

@Orangebird69 But it isn't. HTH.

Which is why I specifically, deliberately started my post with the words "The visual...".

Fag smokers go out and stand there for 2 mins, done.

All the people I've seen vaping seem to walk around sucking on the thing non-stop.

Do what you like, smoke, vape, I don't care - it's your lungs. I'm just saying it looks unpleasant to see grown adults perma-sucking on their pipe like teats.

Orangebird69 · 01/09/2017 12:01

7days 🙌😂

7Days · 01/09/2017 12:02

Puritan.
Like I said.

PencilsInSpace · 01/09/2017 12:02

Yes Trb17, as I said, there is experimentation among youth. They're not going on to regular use though, unless they were already smoking.

Understandably this is something PH are keeping a very close eye on. ASH do a good fact sheet on this.

Titanz · 01/09/2017 12:03

I'm just saying it looks unpleasant to see grown adults perma-sucking on their pipe like teats.

You creating this visual in your head says more about you than the vapers.

PencilsInSpace · 01/09/2017 12:15

It's not about you lot and whether you like the look of it, find it annoying, think vapers should be ashamed or whatever. It's about saving lives and massively improving the health of smokers and everyone around them.

This is some of you.

Orangebird69 · 01/09/2017 12:16

Ah Pencils, brilliant 😂😂😂😂

ShotsFired · 01/09/2017 12:22

@Titanz You creating this visual in your head says more about you than the vapers.

I don't mind what vapers think of me (or what I think...I think). I was just joining in on a public forum with my own thoughts on the subject at hand. It's not a "vapers only allowed here" thread. I understand that many people who smoke/vape feel as if they can't do right for doing wrong though, which probably makes some of you feel a bit more defensive.

Have a nice day - vapers, smokers and non Flowers
