We've been on the waiting list for a beach for for ages.

A new set are being built and we've been successful in securing a great one.

We were going to buy but I've had to put a hold on it for the following reasons-

I was trying to -using the square footage/floor plans - plan where storage stuff and table/mini kitchen would go etc and asked DH for his help

He's basically dismissed everything and told me that his kayack is going in and that everything else will have to fit around it.

His kayak will only fit it its diagonal and he's refusing to have is hing from the ceiling (which means everyone will have to bend anyway to avoid concussion - there's no permission granted for lockable storage under either.

I asked him is he'd also maintain /paint do essential repairs as he does nothing at home-answer- no im happy just to have somewhere for a kettle and a kayack. No consideration for anyone else or anyone else's enjoyment of it.

I've told him I'm withdrawing from it then- which he's having a huge strop.

I already do every shred of maintencance/work/upkeep on our home he helps with nothing- he has a home office which looks like he's Mr Trebus's protégée ND can just see myself wishing I'd not bothered.

Am I being unreasonable to withdraw (and think £18k for a kayack storage facility because DH is too fucking lazy to take his out of the shed and onto the car) and look elsewhere for myself and he kids?

Obviously it's unfair to refuse to maintain it and to make it unusable for everyone else.

Is there any way to hook th kayak to ceiling or walls? So it's at least out of the way?

rightwhine · 15/08/2017 11:26

You don't have a kayack problem - you have a dh problem.

Are you even happy with him?

user7841794168 · 15/08/2017 11:26

Get the beach hut, go on your own so their is space in the car for the kayak which you will put in the beach hut for him. You may also have room in the car for some cement powder. The sea is wet.

I would love a beach hut, I sure as hell wouldn't use it to store a kayak.

Oldraver · 15/08/2017 11:26

If you have been waiting years and it's always been your dream don't give up on the hut..

Deal with the kayak issue later

user7841794168 · 15/08/2017 11:27

bugger ^there.
can't believe I did that :-(

BannedFromNarnia · 15/08/2017 11:27

Get the beach hut. Do not cut off your nose to spite your face.

Ensure that the kayak fits into the space sensibly by chopping a foot off one end. Problem solved.

But seriously, if my DH tried to dominate the space like this I would be leaving the kayak out the front every time I wanted to use the hut and not caring how I chucked it about. And everytime his carelessness damaged my nice beach hut something of his would be equally fucked up. But I'm petty like that.)

Floralnomad · 15/08/2017 11:28

Ridiculous waste of money if he's filling it with a kayak . I'd buy it , if he puts his kayak in it it is likely to get damaged by all the people just walking in and out standing in / on his kayak whilst they get changed etc and see how he likes that

LesleyKnopeIsdope · 15/08/2017 11:29

Here's where it gets interesting- he uses the kayack maybe 5 times a year and those 5 times are to get plenty of Instagram footage Hmm

Twat.

We're not minted and the money would be best spent doing up both of our dilapidated bathrooms if he's going to be like that.

He has no interest with how something looks - I papered his workroom with gorgeous paper (as he had peeling manky paint that he half started and left for 3 years) and after three weeks he lay his bike against the wall and trashed the wallpaper.

That's he kind of guy he is.

I papered it and tried to make it look decent as it's he first room you see when you come in the house.

Hmmm I'm over sharing. Apologies Blush

I think even 18k for a shed is too much. Don't you have leasehold fees to pay on top of it?

I never get the point of them, I take a thermos, shade and picknick box to the beach for the day and it gives me all the same.

Anyway get an inflatable kayak or join the nearby club to store it like everyone else.

I suspect he's just a dick in general and this isn't the root problem...

Redredredrose · 15/08/2017 11:31

(I live 10 mins walk from the beach). I can't really see the point of beach huts

Really?! Surely the point is pretty obvious - most people don;t live ten minutes from the beach.

Redredredrose · 15/08/2017 11:32

I don't usually say this, but what are his good points? He sounds like a complete dickhead so far.

LesleyKnopeIsdope · 15/08/2017 11:34

There's no option for understorage
There's no option for additions to my made externally to the beach hut

The rules are quite strict

Couldn't he find a lock up nearby to store his precious kayak? A lot cheaper than a beach hut.

OVienna · 15/08/2017 11:36

I love how the first response is from someone who lives 9 min from the beach and "can't see the point of beach huts." Well, maybe because you live walking distance from it?!

LesleyKnopeIsdope · 15/08/2017 11:37

Yep

I'm feeling like he's a complete tosser

I cannot lug shitloads of stuff to the beach locally to us- I have a physical condition which makes me a bit wimpy -I have no strength so the beach hut meant a lot to me.

Dc will be grown up all too quickly .

Meh.

Was expecting a barrage of "YABU-your Dh is right" given how U the H is being today.

He sounds like a right dick.

But on the subject of beach huts. I'm assuming they don't have plumbing? Is it an unsaid protocol that you pee in a jug and chuck it in the sea or whatever?

BarbaraofSevillle · 15/08/2017 11:38

I went to the beach on Sunday and there was a row of glorious beach huts. You could hire them for the day or the week, but I suspect they were all booked up as there were people outside most of them.

If you go to the beach a lot and have the money to buy one I can see it being worth it. You can store things in to save lugging them about, get changed, shelter from showers, prepare food and drink etc.

And I bet they hold their value really well, or even appreciate, if there is good demand for them. Are you allowed to rent it out when you aren't using it? Of course, the kayak couldn't stay there if you did that. I bet people pay more than £18k for some in popular areas too.

Slimthistime · 15/08/2017 11:38

Yanbu
Your dream was a beach hut, not a storage unit.

LesleyKnopeIsdope · 15/08/2017 11:39

Exploded
I meantioned storage closer to the beach- his reply
Why would I spend more when I've paid nearly 20k for. Beach hut

He clearly only see this as a place to store his kayack and probably one chair- for him.

ASauvingnonADay · 15/08/2017 11:40

YANBU, he definitely is!

Curious about the toilet question.. 🙈

OVienna · 15/08/2017 11:40

I agree he's been a twit. (Feck I want a beach hut...where IS IT?)

LesleyKnopeIsdope · 15/08/2017 11:40

It is an absolute steal given its location (slightly further away but the desirable huts fetch 40-60 grand!)

I researched it well and think it would definitely go up in value-

Needmoresleep · 15/08/2017 11:41

Buy the beach hut and a roof rack/trailer. Or get one of those blow up ones from Decathlon.

Are you allowed to rent the beach hut out for odd weeks (or informally to friends and neighbours?) If so tell him it is a part business proposition and you need to have it looking nice.

A beach hut is a brilliant way of spending the summer at the beach, kids able to play safely, friends over for evening BBQs and so on. What are you all supposed to do whilst he is out in his kayak?

Tempted to suggest my first ever LTB. It sounds as if the problems are quite deeply seated. Stand firm.

MorrisZapp · 15/08/2017 11:42

Sorry but he is being so unreasonable I have to question his actual words?

Upon hearing that you're getting the expensive beach hut of your dreams he says basically fuck you, my kayaks going in there, so you and the kids can't enjoy it? But expects you to pay?

What does this conversation look like because I can't picture it.

WiIdfire · 15/08/2017 11:42

Don't miss out on the hut. Can you arrange it so that the kayak has a space on the floor, but that the first thing that happens when you get there is that it is chucked out on the beach? If not, once you have the hut, plan a weekend on your own to go and fit it out with sofa and cupboards, etc etc so when he first goes to see if there isnt space for the kayak and he has to bring it home again.
