We've been on the waiting list for a beach for for ages.

A new set are being built and we've been successful in securing a great one.

We were going to buy but I've had to put a hold on it for the following reasons-

I was trying to -using the square footage/floor plans - plan where storage stuff and table/mini kitchen would go etc and asked DH for his help

He's basically dismissed everything and told me that his kayack is going in and that everything else will have to fit around it.

His kayak will only fit it its diagonal and he's refusing to have is hing from the ceiling (which means everyone will have to bend anyway to avoid concussion - there's no permission granted for lockable storage under either.

I asked him is he'd also maintain /paint do essential repairs as he does nothing at home-answer- no im happy just to have somewhere for a kettle and a kayack. No consideration for anyone else or anyone else's enjoyment of it.

I've told him I'm withdrawing from it then- which he's having a huge strop.

I already do every shred of maintencance/work/upkeep on our home he helps with nothing- he has a home office which looks like he's Mr Trebus's protégée ND can just see myself wishing I'd not bothered.

Am I being unreasonable to withdraw (and think £18k for a kayack storage facility because DH is too fucking lazy to take his out of the shed and onto the car) and look elsewhere for myself and he kids?

I've spent all last night googling beach huts. I want one so much.

endaseclipse · 16/08/2017 17:37

What about an inflatable kayak & pump that could be stored discretely then everyone wins. Could it be you're knocking heads together because you both have such oppposing visions. Good luck.

Fbpn · 16/08/2017 17:50

If I had a beach hut I'd be practically living in it.
Does he even use the kayak? Do the kids? If he does he can still take it when he want to use it surely. If it was something he used every weekend maybe I could understand it being stored there. Could you pull it out and dump it (hard) on the sand (breaking it) when you arrive at the hut?

I want a beach hut!

Lovelymess · 16/08/2017 17:51

Withdraw - 18k is silly money to store a kayak

HereTheyComeTheFloofyfulOnes · 16/08/2017 17:54

That's not a bad idea - maybe you could live in it? Grin

IrritatedUser1960 · 16/08/2017 18:01

Why are you with this entitled joker.

ClarkeyCat · 16/08/2017 18:02

OMG. It's been covered here about a million times that she can't move the kayak at all by herself, so no she can't take it out and dump it. She has also said that he used to have an inflatable kayak but he said it was too much hassle. Anyway, to me it seems that he has no interest in any kind of compromise and actually maybe gets some pleasure out of ruining the OP's beach hut dream. It seems so spiteful. I agree it sounds like he does not like her. She should definitely get the parents on board. (And LTB.)

Maireadplastic · 16/08/2017 18:04

Tell him writing a kayak is against the regs because items above a certain size are a health and safety issue and/or single items above a certain value pose too much of a risk to get insurance.

Lauralou69 · 16/08/2017 18:10

Drill a hole in the kayak, encourage him to go out in the kayak during a storm.......photograph him in his kayak as it fills with water........shout "dont worry, I've taken a pic for your fucking Instagram, now drown ya bastard!" ..........sit down in your beach hut and enjoy a nice glass of wine 😁

REBECCAB123 · 16/08/2017 18:12

I just think he needs to compromise and if it can be stored underneath securely or on the ceiling then it can be there - if not it can stay where it is. Beach huts have the potential for many happy days - I hope you and your family get some x

thatdearoctopus · 16/08/2017 18:12

This is turning into "Cancel the cheque."

SHE CAN'T MOVE THE KAYAK ON HER OWN!!!!!

ZippyCameBack · 16/08/2017 18:13

I'd love a beach hut, I think there's something really magical about them. My house overlooks a beach though, so my chances of getting one are slim.
Obviously your DH is being an arse, OP. Have you checked the regs really carefully to see if boat storage is forbidden? Is there someone in charge of enforcing the rules who could confirm that A very Dim View would be taken of storing his bastard boat in your beach hut?

I'm trying to think of something constructive to say, but mostly just keep remembering how very easy it is to put a hole in a fibreglass boat (small, sharp stone is all it takes-voice of experience!). Good luck with this and please don't let his selfishness ruin your dream. It's such a completely harmless thing to want and probably a really good investment too.

Sparklyglitter · 16/08/2017 18:14

Sorry I truly don't mean this to be unkind - But is he the man for you?
I would buy the beach hut sounds like it would be a happy addition for you, minus the kayak!

jayne1976 · 16/08/2017 18:20

He's the one depriving your kids, because even if you buy it they can't use it! Sounds like he's just plain lazy!

User02 · 16/08/2017 18:24

I would love a beach hut but being miles from the coast I had to compromise. So now I have a gaily painted shed in the garden and blow up paddling pools and others which are used as sandpits.

The OP should off load the H (she does not even call him DH) and keep the beach hut for herself and the DCS. The H sounds so selfish and unco-operative. I would not let him in my hut

user1471462428 · 16/08/2017 18:27

Maybe you could encourage him to go out at night in his kayak, fake his death then live off his life insurance in Panama Grin

Jaxhog · 16/08/2017 18:35

Tell him writing a kayak is against the regs because items above a certain size are a health and safety issue and/or single items above a certain value pose too much of a risk to get insurance.

This! He sounds too lazy to check if this actually true.

(Now I want a beach hut too)

Longdistance · 16/08/2017 18:40

Sell the fucking kayak when he's out to cover some of the beach hut costs.

There you go dear 🖕🏼

user1483875094 · 16/08/2017 18:45

Breakfast at Tiffany

THAT! or a quick divorce from one of the most unreasonable, "entitled" and selfish people I have ever heard of!

FFS!

Shockers · 16/08/2017 18:52

Buy him bars to put the kayak on the roof of his car, then he can use it on his visits to your beach hut Wink.

Lovingit81 · 16/08/2017 18:59

He sounds like a knob

mrsamerican · 16/08/2017 19:00

My inlaws have a beach hut, and they have had it since my brother in law was a baby. It makes for some amazing memories. We always have bacon butties on the gas burner for New Years lunch and Christmas lunch whatever the weather.

They have some slats across the top gable thing to store paddles, canoes, bodyboard and even blankets. Try to compromise and not dig in your heels. Think of the amazing memories you will make! Don't mess up the dream you have had to win an argument.

If it was me, I would put what I wanted plus kayak in the hut and just take it out when you are there (unless you have some disability meaning you can't move it- that would be unreasonable). Owning a beach hut means a level of setting up each time you go anyway- parting curtains, moving chairs out, getting out toys etc.

WhoreOfBabyliss · 16/08/2017 19:03

Buy it half and half with your parents. Divorce the tool and get 'your' half of the beach hut as part of the settlement. Don't let him piss on your chips over this OP. He sounds horrible. There are non horrible men out there you know. I reckon kayaks are shaped like that for insertion. I would help you lift it for that purpose but I reckon I would have to get in the queue. His mates know he's a tool too it seems Grin
