To be worried

Sorry I'm posting for traffic, have already started a thread and had barely any replies. Not sure what I'm looking for really, a handhold or people who have been through similar.

Around 6-7 weeks ago, my ds aged 6 suddenly started complaining of hip/joint aches and pains. I put it down to growing pains.

3 weeks ago he went really lethargic, he sleeps 6-6.30 so is having enough sleep. His teachers started commenting that he was tired in school, told he has gone from a really happy active boy to quite irritable.

Managed to get him into the doctors, who checked him over, went through quite a lot with him. He's now urgently requested that he have full bloods done. And referred him urgently to a children's hospital.

He then told asked me what I thought they would be testing for, I have been googling and each time it comes up with leukaemia . So I told asked my doctor that. He said that was a big worry and it's why he is referring him so quickly. He said the way my son has explained the pain and pointed it out it rules out other causes.

He's at hospital next Thursday, and I'm bloody terrified. Feel awful for not taking it seriously at first. I honestly just thought growing pains.

My other ds 3 is diagnosed epileptic, I'm petrified for what's to come for ds 6 now

Would be grateful for anyone who has been through similar to reply.

Oh bless you, how scary for you all. I don't have anything helpful to say but it sounds like your doctor has taken it seriously and your ds is in good hands. Stay strong for him and stay away from google!

Doctor is being really good, he's not happy with how long I'm having to wait for an appointment at the hospital so is going to see what he can do now.

I'm really tempted to take him to a&e at alder hay but I just don't want to waste anyone's time. It's so hard trying to do what's right

I don't have any experience but I j see stand you must be terrified. I'm sure someone will come long shortly with some experience. Just remember that although symptoms etc may be the same it does not mean the worst.

Can't offer much in way of advice OP but what I do know is that there is about a 90% remission rate for childhood leukaemia. and a hug for you.

A boy of 5 had leukaemia at my dds school a couple of years ago. He's fine now, was up in a tree in the park yesterday full of energy.

Leukemia is very treatable in children. And they're making new advances every day.

I get you, though, there'd be no way I could wait until next Thursday for an appointment for the blood work. That must be a nightmare for you. How soon will you get the results after the testing?

I haven't got first hand experience of this, but I do have a friend who's son was diagnosed with leukaemia at the age of 8.

I know that the first thing you think is that it's going to kill your child, but the effective treatment rate is 90+% even if it is that, which is not confirmed!

Please try to keep that in mind! It may not even be leukaemia, but if it is, the NHS act really quickly. The boy I know, was diagnosed and the next day was in for his first chemo session. He is doing really well, and I believe he's got about four months to go until treatment is likely to be finished.

I'm going to leave it until 3.30 if I don't hear back from the doctor by then I'm going to hospital.

I'm not sure how long it takes to get the results back, I never thought to ask. Will try and find that out.

Can't think straight at the minute, never thought for one second I'd be worried about this.

for you OP, you must be so worried. I think it's a worst fear for a parent, for your child to be poorly.

Sending so many positive vibes your way that it isn't anything serious. But even if it is, like others have said, medical advances mean that treatments for leukaemia have a really high success rate. Sending lots of love your way.

That seems like quite a long wait OP. If I were you, take him to a&e. This is your DS and you're frightened. Your GP hasn't been able to reassure you. I don't think anybody could accuse you of time wasting. Stay away from google, you won't find any reassurance on there.

Hand hold op. Let's hope they get that appt moved up. I wouldn't blame you for going straight to the hospital, I can imagine I would do this too as I am such a worrier. Better to find out and if it really is leukaemia do keep it in your mind that there is a very very high rate of remission and permanent remission as others have said. Try not to google terrible stories, most don't write about the good ones, but there's certainly tons of them as the statistics show

I feel a bit better knowing I'm not unreasonable in taking him to hospital so thankyou. Think I'll just take him to alder hay, I know I can't wait.

I don't know what to do about school, I've phoned the teachers and let them know what's going on, but I know he will be desperate to go to school. But he's just falling asleep whilst he's there.

It's very treatable. My Dad has it.

Has he been checked for Lymes disease?

I would be going straight to a&e as well. If this isn't an emergency, then I don't know what is. for you, and hoping for good news.

Doctor has managed to get my an appointment tomorrow for bloods now. Feel a little better about that x

You're doing all the right things. It's instinctive to fear the worst case scenario but hopefully your fears will turn out to be this, just fears, and won't be realised. My only advice is to steer clear of Dr Google now that you are in the health care system - it is so easy to get misinformation on health issues on the internet. As a PP has said, there tends to be no messing when it comes to childhood illness so you'll know what you're dealing with very soon I'm sure.

Sounds like my ds some years ago.

At 2, he was diagnosed with ME after displaying lots of your ds symptoms. . (Leukemia was also mentioned for him. .) Thankfully he is managing his condition tho at times its hard.
