To be worried

Sorry I'm posting for traffic, have already started a thread and had barely any replies. Not sure what I'm looking for really, a handhold or people who have been through similar.

Around 6-7 weeks ago, my ds aged 6 suddenly started complaining of hip/joint aches and pains. I put it down to growing pains.

3 weeks ago he went really lethargic, he sleeps 6-6.30 so is having enough sleep. His teachers started commenting that he was tired in school, told he has gone from a really happy active boy to quite irritable.

Managed to get him into the doctors, who checked him over, went through quite a lot with him. He's now urgently requested that he have full bloods done. And referred him urgently to a children's hospital.

He then told asked me what I thought they would be testing for, I have been googling and each time it comes up with leukaemia Sad. So I told asked my doctor that. He said that was a big worry and it's why he is referring him so quickly. He said the way my son has explained the pain and pointed it out it rules out other causes.

He's at hospital next Thursday, and I'm bloody terrified. Feel awful for not taking it seriously at first. I honestly just thought growing pains.

My other ds 3 is diagnosed epileptic, I'm petrified for what's to come for ds 6 now Sad

Would be grateful for anyone who has been through similar to reply.

Thanks for reading sorry if it's all mumbled I just feel so numb and not really explaining myself properly.

Op, we had similar with ds1 last year (aged 8).

I'd noticed that he'd been a bit tired lately and a few early nights didn't fix it. He was just droopy and lethargic for days for no apparent reason and he also started having increased leg pains - he'd always had them occasionally but it got noticeably more frequent.

Then he woke up one morning and the glands on and around his neck were huge, literally golf ball size. He had no other signs of any illness, like runny nose or cough, which is when his glands are usually affected. But he looked awful, pale but flushed, with red shadows under his eyes like he hadn't slept in days.

We took him to the GP who also found the glands in his stomach (abdomen/groin maybe?) were swollen but no signs of an URT infection so sent him for bloods.

He had the test and it was about 3 days before the GP called. She said there was nothing massively to worry about but his white cell count was higher than it should be so he was fighting off something...but glandular fever had been ruled out. And he needed repeat blood tests in 3 weeks to check the white cell count again. And to plough him with vitamin c rich foods, lots of water, and daily probiotic drinks to try and give him a boost.

Cue 3 weeks of bloody panic from me and hovering over ds1 who didn't seem to get any better. Still managing school OK but like a wet weekend constantly. He had the repeat blood tests and the results showed that his white cells were still 'high' but this time only just above normal so had come down somewhat. And we were advised to watch him for 3 weeks and if he was no better to take him back to the GP.

Over the next week or so (so probably about 6 weeks into him being lethargic/off) he perked right up, his glands disappeared and he just seemed much better. So that was that...it was just some random viral thing that gave his immune system a hammering.

Google is not your friend in these cases...everything wrong with ds1 tied to Leukemia and I was convinced that that was what was wrong. But lots of other random unknown viral things can mimic the symptoms too.

Hope that's somewhat reassuring and try not to panic, it's horrible having to wait though I know Flowers

We had very similar to Peridot - sounds like the same Virus - a week in hospital where they couldn't figure out what was wrong, then a month of wait and see while he was still poorly. He too had the high blood cell count. It's just so terrifying waiting - I too had the certainty that something was terribly wrong - OP my thoughts are with you and your family, wishing for a good outcome for you Flowers

Ds had to repeat bloods. It can be that something is high, but not worrying.
For ds the first allergy marker was really high but he'd had a major reaction to the magic cream. Repeated and it was still high, which turned out to be dust mites.
But they said they liked to repeat because sometimes you get a freak result either through lab error or unknown reason if they had a big derivation from normal.

He's also been high on something (I think-not a medic) like white blood cell count. That basically meant a virus. They said it was the wrong side of abnormal. If it was low then it would be looking for more serious issues.
Hopefully you're something similar.
