Holocaust Memorial Day. What a fucker he is.

On Twitter, there is an account called St Louis Manifest. The St Louis was a ship of Jewish refugees turned away by the USA in 1939. The account is listing the names of the passengers and their fates, including pictures where they exist. It's truly heartbreaking.

I'm not feeling eloquent this morning. So - fuck Trump. Fuck that murderous bastard so hard. Sad

originalmavis · 28/01/2017 09:23

I'm wondering why Pakistan isn't on his little list too? The husband and wife who went on a shooting spree - wasn't she frim Pakistan vis Saudi? I'm actually surprised he didn't have a crack at converts too. Also surprised he didn't try to stop imams coming over from particularly conservative countries to preach.

InformalRoman · 28/01/2017 09:30

I wonder if TM got briefings from psychologists as to how best to deal with Trump?

Last time he came over to his Menie Estate golf club the locals all flew Mexican flags.

Imagine if he comes to the UK and all he could see everywhere was a sea of Mexican flags?

woman12345 · 28/01/2017 09:35

Spudlet even Cuba turned that ship away too, back to their deaths in Europe.
At least on MN, been a lot of supportive posting about Shoah Day. Flowers
My family affected, and I remember elegant, tiny feisty granny in law. She, like many, were not allowed into England, made it to Israel, then went back overland in late 1930s back to Poland to persuade family left to leave, and they said:
" But how can this happen? We have always lived here." They refused to leave, you can guess the end.

ZebraOwl · 28/01/2017 09:37

On the subject of Holocaust Memorial Day AND taking action (& with my cognitive function basically taking a holiday due to Lurgy), attached pic is one of my favourite parts of Anne Frank's Diary.

By the time he gets to England, I suspect there will be many different flags waving.

Having said that the Mexican President and him may be talking further in the future. Let's see what will come out.

I've been listening to the Trump Tapes Formerpig linked upthread.
itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/trump-tapes-part-i-he-doesnt/id1142083165?i=1000377215451&mt=2

Don't worry, they're not all Trump talking: they're primarily analytical discussion between the reporter who carried out the extensive Trump interviews and another reporter. It's very interesting stuff, done pre-election.

One of the characteristics the reporters identify is that rank is of paramount importance to Trump. He's desperate to rank everything, and come out above everyone else. Of course his rage over the smaller crowd bears this out perfectly.

This will also be how people manipulate him - tell him he'll be The Best if he does X. Won't always work for them, but always worth a try.

PausingFlatly · 28/01/2017 09:56

Oh god, woman, I'm so sorry.

amispartacus · 28/01/2017 10:03

I was listening to a report on that ship - can you imagine being turned away from countries who were worried about the potential implications.

Some were allowed to go to the UK. Some were taken in by other European countries. You can guess what happened.

Just come back to 50 notifications on Twitter - wow. Some people really don't like Laura K asking that question.

I really worry about how divided we are as a nation. You can see how extremists can get to power. I do fear history is repeating itself.

Destinysdaughter · 28/01/2017 10:11

And of course fucking Katie Hopkins is making a noise on Twitter as usual. Saying Laura's question made her feel ashamed to be British! ShockAngry

zeezeek · 28/01/2017 10:14

Katie Hopkins makes me ashamed to be British!

amispartacus · 28/01/2017 10:18

Saying Laura's question made her feel ashamed to be British

The best way to challenge is to ask why. Katie and her supporters are not very good at answering and tend to resort to abuse,

Kaija · 28/01/2017 10:28

Just seen Laura K's question, and Trump's response.

No words for this.

PausingFlatly · 28/01/2017 10:32

What really strikes me is the anger and vilification from apparently British posters on Twitter and elsewhere, towards a British journalist asking a foreign politician a perfectly legitimate question.

Why are they angry?

Why are there people in Britain who don't just want Trump in power in the US - which they've now got - but are desperate that he not be held to account or asked anything which takes the shine off his glory?

I wonder if the same people get upset if a British politician is asked about their acknowledged policies? Isn't that exactly what we demand our press do? To the point of some papers publishing details of people's sex lives under the claim it always constitutes "holding to account".

amispartacus · 28/01/2017 10:36

Why are they angry

Apparently because the BBC should be asking other politicians hard questions....

It's a scary world.

The judges are criticised and labelled enemies of the people.
The press is villified and have articles about them asking hard questions.
People want to make their country great again.

Destinysdaughter · 28/01/2017 10:40

What does 'great' even mean? White?

ZebraOwl · 28/01/2017 10:45

How is it that people are somehow getting so aerated about Trump calling Mattis a soldier? They've let everything else go, but this? Noooooo. Hanging offence. How very dare he call a [former] Marine a soldier. (Have seen someone on Twitter nobly forgive said gaffe though.)

ZebraOwl · 28/01/2017 10:47

(I mean, I know that one does not [traditionally] refer to Marines as soldiers & that they hate it, etc; but with the rest of what he's been doing... Jaysus.)

StripeyMonkey1 · 28/01/2017 10:57

This is truly a beautiful thread and a great thread. A terrific thread.

In what world is it wrong to ask tough questions to someone who says he supports the use of torture? This view is coming in large part from the people who dislike 'political correctness' as they say it blunts their freedom of speech. Should we be free to criticise the weak and minorities, but not (arguably) the most powerful man in the world?

PausingFlatly · 28/01/2017 10:59

In the spirit of accuracy, can I correct my post of Fri 27-Jan-17 17:35:46.

I've just re-listened to part of the Trump tapes, and it was by his desk, not his bed, that Trump kept the VCR tapes of himself to watch when he wanted a jolt to his ego.

amispartacus · 28/01/2017 11:03

In what world is it wrong to ask tough questions to someone who says he supports the use of torture

Not just someone. The leader of the free world. The President of the USA.

And people are complaining about - they are complaining about the questioner and not thinking about the answer - that YES,TRUMP SUPPORTS TORTURE

GingerIvy · 28/01/2017 11:04

Not sure if you all are aware of this...as it was kind of buried... but Trump has declared a new holiday dated on his Inauguration Day... he's calling it "Patriotic Devotion Day." Article here. It's not going over well AT ALL. I may have tweeted something rather snotty to Angry Spice.

Beautiful Tarraysa is going to Turkey to get some great trade deals with seriously great guy Erdagon.

Timing, after hand holdy desperation?
Trade deals? With Turkey? Trading what?
Equivalent of small town incarcerated since 'coup'? (80,000)
Strategically key military position?

T'resa the pimp.

GingerIvy · 28/01/2017 11:06

Confirmed: Iran's Asghar Farhadi won't be let into the US to attend Oscar's. He's nominated for best foreign language film...
