It does seem reasonably clear that the Pence thing is fake news - www.snopes.com/mike-pence-allowing-rape-victims-to-have-abortions-will-lead-to-women-trying-to-get-raped/

illegitimateMortificadospawn · 28/01/2017 07:44

I feel like we need a 'while you were sleeping...' round-up for UK/European posters. First up: Extreme Vetting order signed by Trump

SenseiWoo · 28/01/2017 07:49

You can't turn away for one minute

We should though, at least some of the time. The more people just 'react' to Trump & Co, the more successfully they control the agenda and the news cycle. We all need to think about what grassroots work and coalition-building we could be doing in real life to protect the things we hold dear.

amispartacus · 28/01/2017 07:53

I'm just glad the world is here in the morning.

The sad thing is - is that is some 'logic' in some things he believes in. But he goes about it like a bull in a china shop.

I have no doubt that there are some terrorists hidden in refugees coming over here.

But there are also many home grown terrorists as well.

I have no doubt that there are some illegal immigrants who commit crime, rape and murder.

But there are many many Americans who do the same thing

I have no doubt that there are some Muslims who commit terrorist actions in the name of Islam.

But there are many many Muslims who don't.

But Trump is an all or nothing person. He labels whole groups and attacks whole groups of people. When you attack whole groups and label whole groups as the cause of your issues (without at the same time doing or saying anything about the same issues that people 'like you' cause), you are seeding division. You are creating other.

That's what scares me. He is creating 'other' - when you use 'other' to appeal to your fan base, well, we know how that turns out. History in so much of the world tells us that.

Yesterday was Holocaust Memorial Day.

amispartacus · 28/01/2017 08:01

I get what you say - but at the same time, people need to know that many others massively oppose his views and his extreme views. It needs to be called out for what it is and any awkward questions need to be posed and Trump supporters asked difficult questions.

But yes, at the same time, grassroots stuff needs to go on. In the UK, we need to be making our MPs aware that there are people who are concerned over our dealings with Trump and what that means.

Saying that, we sell stuff to Saudi so out Government doesn't really give a shit.

I will be attending the Trump protests when he comes to the UK. That will be a security nightmare for him

I bet he will get a lot of protests when he visits foreign countries. I wonder when he's off to Mexico. Or the next G8 conference. That is going to be one hell of a meeting.

GingerIvy · 28/01/2017 08:06

I think he is going to shun a lot of alliances and drop out. The US has always been very insular in some ways but this seems to be on a whole new level. I would say he is paranoid.

BigBadgers · 28/01/2017 08:16

The extreme vetting orders are surely total isolationism. His reactiveness and aggressive attacks on others mean he is naturally going to break a lot of alliances. People dont want to deal with someone who is going publicly insult them. Also unpredictability is bad for politics where you have to be prepared to play a longer game to come extent (at least longer than 5 minutes). The complication i guess for a lot organisations like the UN and NATO is that America holds so much of the money, but I guess if they start withdrawing that finance as trump is threatening, America will get increasingly marginalised by other nations who don't want to deal with their shit.

Megatherium · 28/01/2017 08:17

Interesting report on R4 this morning when they suggested the press conference was relatively successful for Trump purely because he didn't say anything too utterly stupid or bigoted for once. That's incredibly faint praise given the way the questions were limited and he refused to answer the awkward ones.

MsHooliesCardigan · 28/01/2017 08:18

This almost isn't funny.

amispartacus · 28/01/2017 08:20

Holocaust memorial day

The day he signed his executive order affecting refugees from war torn countries. Well, Muslim refugees.

BigBadgers · 28/01/2017 08:21

woman I knew about the racism march, but not the 3 million. I'm a bit outside London and can't get to them all, bit will try and do maybe one a month if they come up. I really want to do more now. It would be good if we can post grassroots actions people can take part in and protests taking place that we know about. I find it is sometimes tricky knowing about them if you aren't already linked up with the organisation or on social media a lot.

There was a comment from a pp earlier about doing something as well as talking about it, so this would be a good way of letting people know what they can do.

amispartacus · 28/01/2017 08:23

Indeed. He also could have had the chance to reassure the many people around the world about some of his views - after Laura's question

But no, he deflected it. He joked about the question.

He hates the press - and when you have people on TV being interviewed about him and defending him, it is the job of journalists to challenge 'lies' and deflection.

The standard response is 'well, the press lies'.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/01/2017 08:27

If it were truly about terrorists then his list of banned countries makes no sense. There are other countries in the region - Afghanistan, Palestine and Saudi for instance which arguably have stronger links to terrorism than many other countries on the list.

So it's not about terrorists.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/01/2017 08:28

We do need to mobilise though, as well as watch, otherwise we are like grannies knitting in the corner watching and tutting away.

Roussette · 28/01/2017 08:30

I will be attending the Trump protests when he comes to the UK. That will be a security nightmare for him Hehe, this made me laugh, sorry... just have a pic of the Orange One spotting you in the crowd ami and him saying 'That's it, enough's enough, get the security car, I'm going home!' Grin
I know without doubt at least one of my DCs will attend any march should he dare to set foot on UK soil!

Isn't it bizarre that we can read an anti abortion quote by Pence and even if it's made up, we don't spot that because his views are so bloody awful. That says something it really does.

Mega excellent point on Statue of Liberty. I knew there was an inscription and thanks for quoting it as it goes against everything DT is doing at the moment.

I do worry that if Emperor Trump is unceremoniously dumped and Pence takes over, will people be so relieved that Trump is gone that they sleepwalk into the shitstorm that Pence will then bring. He HATES women
Agree with you Ginger. I think of the two of them like farts.

The orange one is "The Show off Fart" - loud, blustery and leaves a bad smell. Pence the snake is a "Silent but Deadly" - a creeping one that sneaks up on you.
Grin

The press need to ask him why the country where most of the 9/11 terrorists came from is not on the list.

You've hit the nail on the head kitten. The map shows that he is clearly not banning countries where he has business interests or has done business with. Saudi Arabia for instance, he has business there, yet they are the single most significant source of funding to terrorist groups. No ban. All makes sense doesn't it...

That's when you ask questions of Trump supporters. That throws them.

BigBadgers · 28/01/2017 08:42

Here isa list of the 12 official presidential actions he has taken so far....In one week! Nobody can say he isn't a productive fucker.

www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/jan/27/trump-first-12-official-presidential-actions

BigBadgers · 28/01/2017 08:45

The Saudis have always been American allies. They have lots of money and oil. For years there has just been blustering and dead cats from usa whenever someone brings up their funding of terrorism. The UK do the same and sell them loads of arms.

BigBadgers · 28/01/2017 08:48

Though saying that the us did stop arms sales to Saudi at the end of last year. Sort of a bit late in the day though and no doubt that is or will soon be reversed by the new administration.

BigBadgers · 28/01/2017 08:49

I really must learn to finish an entire thought process before I post :o

amispartacus · 28/01/2017 08:51

The UK do the same and sell them loads of arms

I know. Can't annoy them, can we? Are there any countries with principles out there?

I've linked up with lib-dems, I'm labour, and am delivering postcards today to send to MP to persuade against a50. Emailing support for scientists for Europe today too.
It's not just about EU, it's about letting Banks' EDL party in and status as vassal nation is complete. Sorry about this, but even the daily fail is printing this:

The next G8 summit will be fascinating. Can you imagine the discussions and the tensions?
