To refuse eating or buying anything halal?

Is somebody unreasonable to refuse to buy or eat anything halal?

I'm not sure. I mean, everybody gets to choose what they want to eat (or not eat). But still...

It's tricky isn't it, DD has a friend who only eats halal and she came for her tea on Friday so I bought halal chicken to accommodate her

I think it depends. Someone explained t9 me that there are different types of halal. One is stunned, one isnt. He only eats the meat from non stunned. I wouldnt eat that nor would i buy it. Besides its apparently very hard to get in the UK so he usually eats vegetarian food.

I dont have ban on anything 'halal'. But would want to buy meat if it wasnt stunned.

If killing animals offends you so much, then be vegetarian.

Personally I think it depends what you mean by halal. Supermarket halal where animals are killed in the same way as other animals but with a tape recording playing. Or strict halal where they are killed unstunned.

And then I'd question why someone has the issue with it. If they only buy higher welfare meat then I'd have sympathy. If halal is the only problem then I'd wonder why they don't have an issue with intensive farming.

What are your reasons?
If you're concerned about animal welfare and slaughtering without stunning you should probably focus on kosher meat which is not stunned and only the front part of the animal used.

Almost all uk halal meat is stunned before slaughtering.
If it's because islanaphobia has discouraged you from doing basic research to inform your viewpoint YABU

From my point of view it would depend on the reason why.

If someone had an ethical objection to the method of slaughter then I would respect that.

It's not always clear if "blessed" meat has been pre-stunned before the animal has its throat slit.

However if someone was motivated by religious bigotry I'd find that unacceptable.

It's not unreasonable if you're veggie, vegan or allergic to the food. (I.e. Ethically against meat or medical reasons)

Interesting how NO one ever onjects to Kosher beat on welfare grounds...

Regardless of the religious aspects neither myself nor dp would buy anything halal purely due to what we understand to be the method of slaughter, in the same way we wouldn't by eggs from caged birds. I think we'd cook vegetarian for any guests with religious requirements.

FWIW I'm a vegetarian of 20 years and dp is a conscientious meat eater.

If you have genuine ethical objections to halal slaughter, then it's at least as reasonable not to buy it as it is for someone to buy it for religious reasons.

If you have to cater for someone who only will eat halal food, or vice versa, then the obvious solution is vegetarian dishes.

If you don't want to eat it, then don't eat it. Why do you need to announce it or check with mumsnet first?

I buy organic as it is less likely to be pumped full of chemicals/water/colourings etc and the poor critter will have at least been fed well and reasonably well treated. I can't say the same for cheapo cuts or halal, and can't say that I've knowingly bought halal organic (they do say that a lot if the lamb in the UK is halal - not sure how true that is).

I watched a documentary once on slaughter houses, the Halal and Kosher ones seemed to be treating the animals with more consideration and compassion than the regular ones.

vetinari I have never seen kosher meat for sale or advertised whereas many restaurant advertise as halal and it's in my local supermarket. Might just be where I live though...

Eat non-halal meat. The animals aren't killed at all.
Become vegan.
Don't buy leather goods.
Don't buy anything tested on animals.
Don't use scrubs with microbeads.

I was veggie for eight years and seek out ethically raised meat now. Couldn't give a tiny shit if someone mumbled some words over it.

Veterinari - I think people who object to halal might well object to kosher too if it was as commonly available.

I personally have no issue with it (I think? I admittedly never thought about it).

I'm just not sure how to go out to lunch with people that refuse to eat halal (but are fine with kosher...) or anything else and people that refuse to eat anything not halal...

I'm not buying, serving or knowingly eating halal meat.

My vegetarian and vegan food is often marked as Halal.
