To refuse eating or buying anything halal?

ClaryIsTheBest · 24/01/2017 19:31

Is somebody unreasonable to refuse to buy or eat anything halal?

I'm not sure. I mean, everybody gets to choose what they want to eat (or not eat). But still...

instead of anaesthetising you and then shooting you I'm going to anaesthetise you and then cut your throat while someone plays a tape in the background. Neither is ideal but one isn't measurably worse than the other.

Which one is worse...? Confused

I mean, if you're unconscious it doesn't matter, right?

Personally I think it depends what you mean by halal. Supermarket halal where animals are killed in the same way as other animals but with a tape recording playing. Or strict halal where they are killed unstunned. Confused

First of all, why haven't abattoirs upgraded to CDs or even iPods?

Secondly, what kind of music do these unfortunate creatures like to listen to while they're being slaughtered? A bit of Phil Collins, perhaps? Abba? Kajagoogoo? Justin Bieber? Super Furry Animals?

ActuallyThatsSUPREMECommander · 24/01/2017 20:14

That was indeed my point.

Pluto30 · 24/01/2017 20:14

I'm not vegan. But they do have a point

Feel free to go vegan then.

ephemeralfairy · 24/01/2017 20:14

I don't have any more of an objection to halal meat than I do to intensively reared factory farmed meat.

In my experience, people who make a fuss about halal meat are not usually too bothered by the animal welfare issue, and seem to just use it as a smokescreen to make a fuss about something else Hmm

DISCLAIMER:
May I stress that I'm in no way implying that OP is doing this, it's just my subjective personal experience.

Livelovebehappy · 24/01/2017 20:16

As are the 'you don't like halal meat, so you are a bigot' crowd. Wondered how long it would be before the word 'bigot' was introduced into the thread.

Slimmingsnake · 24/01/2017 20:16

I suppose ,well for me ,I think if I was going to die what would be the less painful way to die...and then apply that to animals for meat..I'm vegan ,I don't judge anyone who eats meat,I just wish there was a pain free way for the animal die.

dontquotem3 · 24/01/2017 20:17

Kosher is not allowed for Muslims.

Actuallythat's your comment made me chuckle; dont want halal, stick to pork 😁

Pluto30 · 24/01/2017 20:17

Why is he OK with kosher for ethical reasons but not halal?

Presumably for the same reason most would choose to go to Israel rather than Saudi Arabia.

One commits massive human rights abuses against gay people, and one doesn't.

Snifftest · 24/01/2017 20:17

YABU. Most halal meat is slaughtered in exactly the same way as non-halal meat.

Kosher meat on the other hand isn't stunned before slaughter (as if it were it wouldn't be kosher).

So, you would not be unreasonable to refuse to eat unstunned meat, but do your research rather than jumping on the islamaphobic bandwagon.

DesolateWaist · 24/01/2017 20:17

'well, as a gay man I...'

So he brought up him being gay before asking about the meat being Halal and the objecting to it on welfare grounds?

To be honest he sounds like someone I wouldn't really want to be friends with.

whyohwhy000 · 24/01/2017 20:18

If you (or someone else) is so concerned, just go for the vegetarian option.

Rubies12345 · 24/01/2017 20:19

OK so this is nothing to do with animal welfare.

He objects to the muslim religion because he feels it is anti gay people? Fair enough.

DesolateWaist · 24/01/2017 20:19

As are the 'you don't like halal meat, so you are a bigot' crowd.

So what is your objection to Halal food then? We have established that the animal welfare is much the same.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 24/01/2017 20:20

Loads of vegetarian food is labelled halal. Halal just means 'permitted' or something along those lines.

ClaryIsTheBest · 24/01/2017 20:21

desolate

No, I knew he was gay before he said that. And I do think that him being gay actually may play a legitimate role.
Because, like pluto said:

Why is he OK with kosher for ethical reasons but not halal?

+Presumably for the same reason most would choose to go to Israel rather than Saudi Arabia.*

One commits massive human rights abuses against gay people, and one doesn't.

Well his refusal to eat halal will certainly learn those pesky homophobes. Hmm

Justanothernameonthepage · 24/01/2017 20:22

I'm not vegan, but I don't pretend that farming is a pretty business. I understand that for me to have my milk and eggs, animals suffer. I understand that I don't need to eat meat to survive so that no matter if I eat Halal or not, an animal has died unnecessarily. And although I buy meat with high welfare and eat vegan when I'm out to avoid caged hen eggs, I don't pretend that the animal dieing without a recorded prayer is any better than one that died with it.

rubybleu · 24/01/2017 20:23

Rightly or wrongly I associate halal labelled meat in the U.K. as generally poor quality, intensively reared meat, so I don't buy it.

Iknowyouwontlikethis · 24/01/2017 20:23

Hi so I'm Muslim! Name changed for this.

Yes I buy halal. Most meat is stunned. If there isn't a halal option or we aren't sure then we are vegetarian. As far as I am aware we can eat kosher as a last resort. As is actually we can eat pork.....if we were in the dessert with no other option but a pig that happened to be there.... Although if the pig were alive it was surviving on something so you would eat that probably ..veggies or whatever.

I understand if some people don't like it. But then they should probably research better. And ask questions. So I'm glad op brought this up.

So yeah bash me if you want...others have. Or just eat whatever you want as it is no concern to me or others what you do or don't eat.

Garden. They haven't prayed to the meat. A prayer has been made asking God to bless the meat so that it is pure for us to eat. Big difference

Iknowyouwontlikethis · 24/01/2017 20:26

Sorry garden posted to soon. I respect your opinion.

ClaryIsTheBest · 24/01/2017 20:26

No, I guess it won't, Mrs.

But he won't support those pesky homophobes either... which, honestly, it's a bit more than just potentially 'pesky', is it?

I feel like the word pesky does kind of belittle the persecution and treatment of gays in many Muslims countries.

But I also feel like doing it once... well, it won't really have an impact, right? And it's not like he has... 'divine commandments' or whatever motivating his choices, right?
