To refuse eating or buying anything halal?

ClaryIsTheBest · 24/01/2017 19:31

Is somebody unreasonable to refuse to buy or eat anything halal?

I'm not sure. I mean, everybody gets to choose what they want to eat (or not eat). But still...

In terms of the animal welfare / religious conviction dispute, if you're trying to please both parties then either the Muslim can eat vegetarian or the animal rights enthusiast can reassure themselves that the vast majority of halal meat sold in this country is pre-stunned and has caused no worse suffering than any other cheap industrially produced meat (i.e. Quite a lot, but not specific to religion).

DesolateWaist · 24/01/2017 20:01

As I understand it Kosher is OK for muslims at a push.

Pluto30 · 24/01/2017 20:02

Wouldn't buy kosher (uncommon where I live) or halal meat.

Hideously unethical/unnecessarily cruel methods of slaughter.

Considering the whole "separation of church and state" thing, of course animal welfare etc. should come before someone's religious convictions. I would suggest that if you're that adamant that your meat should be killed in an inhumane way, you should move to where that's widely accepted, rather than insisting that progressive cultures should instate medieval methods.

JassyRadlett · 24/01/2017 20:04

I'm still very confused about what the 'political statement' might be.

Is it 'I don't like Muslims'?

bonfireheart · 24/01/2017 20:04

I think you'll find that most Muslims will happily eat vegetarian food and it's the non-Muslims who make no logical sense about the type of meat they will/won't eat.

DesolateWaist · 24/01/2017 20:04

Hideously unethical/unnecessarily cruel methods of slaughter.

Care to elaborate and back it up with facts? The Daily Mail doesn't count.

You do know that 'normal' meat isn't tickled to death with kittens don't you?

DesolateWaist · 24/01/2017 20:05

I'm still very confused about what the 'political statement' might be.

It's 'I'm a bigoted bellend who believes every word in the Daily Mail'

JassyRadlett · 24/01/2017 20:05

Hideously unethical/unnecessarily cruel methods of slaughter

Only if unstunned.

The vast majority is stunned before slaughter.

bonfireheart · 24/01/2017 20:06

It's like saying "I'm going to cut your hand off, not with a knife but a pretty ribbon. It'll hurt and you'll lose a hand, but at least I'll have used a pretty ribbon for your suffering."

GarrulousGrimoire · 24/01/2017 20:07

YOUR ARGUMENT IS STUN OR NON STUN

Just saying.

"Halal" meat is mainly stunned before slaughter in the UK in EXACTLY the same way as "normal" meat.

"KOSHER" meat is ALWAYS non stunned and they only eat the forequarter meaning that back part always goes into the normal food chain.

If we don't like non-stun (which actually some people argue is faster and more humane as the act is done with respect and very fast then I suggest people:

A - go veggie

B - Campaign for a ban on non stun slaughter as well in other countries.

Leave religion out of the debate.

Justanothernameonthepage · 24/01/2017 20:07

Pluto, I take it you don't eat eggs then? Baby male chicks being killed in much worse ways than Halal/Kosher. If you want to avoid unnecessary suffering, than I assume you're vegan?

ClaryIsTheBest · 24/01/2017 20:07

Gosh. It's not about me.

Anyhow, a gay friend mine refuses to buy thing labelled as halal. Or go to a restaurant like that. And then he mentioned animal welfare (probably not really a reason, was more of a throwaway comment).

So, that's the situation.

and I just don't know how to handle this situation politely!

I think we'll go vegetarian or kosher. Thanks :)!

'I think everyone has a right to choose what they eat'
Apart from the poor animal that you are eating, they don't have a choice! I think if people actually saw the 'process' of live animal to plate a vast majority would not eat meat. Yuck, have a heart folks!

bonfireheart · 24/01/2017 20:08

Eh, what has your friends sexuality got to do with anything?

ActuallyThatsSUPREMECommander · 24/01/2017 20:09

No, it's normally like saying instead of anaesthetising you and then shooting you I'm going to anaesthetise you and then cut your throat while someone plays a tape in the background. Neither is ideal but one isn't measurably worse than the other.

bonfireheart · 24/01/2017 20:09

No offence but honestly there are so many restaurants that use halal meat but don't advertise it on their menu or website or anywhere. So your "gay friend" will be eating more halal meat than he realises

Pluto30 · 24/01/2017 20:09

I take it you don't eat eggs then? Baby male chicks being killed in much worse ways than Halal/Kosher. If you want to avoid unnecessary suffering, than I assume you're vegan?

Oh god, here we go.

The vegans are out in force.

Rubies12345 · 24/01/2017 20:11

If he doesn't eat halal he won't eat kosher.

Just go a normal restaurant or vegetarian

Pluto30 · 24/01/2017 20:11

Where I am, most people comply with the laws of stunning the animal before slaughtering it. But it was revealed a few years ago that there were many that were not complying, and the industry underwent a huge investigation.

Bibblewanda · 24/01/2017 20:11

I'm not vegan. But they do have a point.

ClaryIsTheBest · 24/01/2017 20:11

He mentioned it. Like: 'well, as a gay man I...'

I guess it has something to do with religious attitudes towards it? Idk. We weren't in a situation where it was appropriate or polite to have an indept discussion...
I was actually quite embarrassed by him just mentioning the halal thing...

Coffeeflavouredbiscuit · 24/01/2017 20:11

Why is he OK with kosher for ethical reasons but not halal?

specialsubject · 24/01/2017 20:12

I have also seen research that throat cutting is more humane than shooting/ electrocuting.

Or is it? A good shot at a rabbit kills it in two seconds and that I have seen first hand. Haven't been to a slaughterhouse.

True - halal allows stunning, kosher doesn't. My mistake on that one.

Slimmingsnake · 24/01/2017 20:13

When we say stunned first...that is what? Is it electricuted, and the animal left unconscious?..I'm just thinking of that film the green mile,I think it was called with tom hanks as a prison officer and they electricuted the prisoners ,it looked horrific,so is that what happens first then their throats slit?

Ilovetorrentialrain · 24/01/2017 20:13

I think some people find the method of slaughter for halal objectionable. I would respect anyone's choices where food is concerned - go Italian and avoid the problem?
