So they can understand cultural differences or be sensitive and just aware. For example if you've just come from war torn area or somewhere interesting the class could talk about.

The DfE said it was so that they could research educational outcomes for children of immigrants, but then it came out that it was in response to a Home Office request for schools to hand over immigrant data so that they could deprioritise school applications for children of illegal immigrants.

However it has now been agreed that this data won't be shared with the Home Office, because schools are not border guards.

It offends me because it's not relevant to my Childs education. I would want to know what the government intends to do with this data.

I just said, politely, I declined to answer.

I feel sure I have actually supplied this info elsewhere (like on the admissions paperwork) but this felt like a political act from the government to weed out illegal immigrants and removing EU children from our schools after Brexit. So I acted politically myself by saying fuck off. Politely.
