I've always done so, since a child (different cats obviously) but a friend of mine, who hates pets, said it's unhygienic. I suppose it is in a way, although I know cats like to clean themselves a lot.

I know it's hardly a study, but I rarely get ill, whereas my friend who's critical of me is constantly complaining of colds/coughs.

Aibu and unhygienic to let my cat sleep on my bed?

Well personally I think it's pretty disgusting to let any animal sleep on your bed. The thought of getting into cat/dog hair covered sheets makes me feel sick.

But it's your bed so it's not really any of her business.

I'd rather sleep with my cat than a man. Hasten to add, cat's and my relationship is totally platonic.

I woke up this morning and the cat was curled up in the gap between mine & DPs pillows, with her head on my pillow, looking ridiculously contented.
I ain't dead yet...

Nothing nicer than sharing a bed with your cat (Sorry Dh).

When I was four years old, our cat, who always wanted my mum to be with her when giving birth after a first difficult confinement, could not find her and came to my bed, had her kitten, just one, while I was asleep. I woke up and the family legend remembers my coming downstairs, announcing "Figgy's had her kitten in my bed and it's all wet!' . Kitten was always 'my' kitten after that.

Each to their own, if you're happy then don't give a toss what anyone else does.

I don't let mine sleep on beds because of the cat hair but that's my choice, as your's is your's.

Cat has slept on my bed for as long as I've had the cat - it's lovely. When DH complained I pointed out that I've had a longer relationship with the cat than him

What dangerous diseases does she think you are catching by letting the cat sleep on your bed? Because there's a difference between 'unhygienic' and 'putting up with some cat hair'.

Mine all do. I quite like waking up surrounded by three snoozing kitties!

She would hate it at my house then, very often we wake to find both dogs and cat on the bed. In the cold months the dogs are under the duvet. I would never change that. One if my dogs has leant when I'm ill to sit with me and lick me or if If I need to go a toilet he will put his paws on me so I don't faint. His a truely special dog and deserves a place on my bed.

I don't let the cat sleep on my bed but he does it anyway.

Today I found him under the duvet of DS2' s bed. He goes round all the beds in our house to share the love.

When I feel low or ill, a purring cat cuddling me makes me feel loved.

Hate it when he dives on my newly washed white bed linen with muddy paws.

BTW if she hates pets your friend probably thinks your entire domestic arrangements are unhygienic but she can't actually tell you that. There is nothing to worry about.

'Hygiene' is vastly overrated. Nothing beats waking up to my two cats curled up beside me. Even in the hot weather, they both have to have a tail tip or a paw touching me. Love v hygiene - not much of a contest

I don't like it. I would never have an animal sleeping on my bed.

But what goes on in your bed is your own business.

I have cats and them on the bed is not my thing at all. Your bed your rules.

My cat always sleeps on the bed. She is not with us at night as she thinks 4 am is loud miaow o'clock, but she always comes for a snuggle in the morning once we are awake then generally spends the rest of the day there.

We have a barrier (old duvet cover) to stop her getting fluff all over our pillows / duvet where head goes.

The only thing better than our bed is on clean washing, on our bed.

YADNBU our cats consider all beds as their own personal property, especially the ones that have just been changed while fur balls are rolling in the ditch the odd human may be allowed to share as long as they don't expect too much space.

Nothing like a snoring old Staffie resting against your leg under the duvet to cheer you up and bring contentment, so i can fuly understand cat "owners" sleeping with their pets.

I frequently wake to find next doors cat tucked in behind my knees. My two cats arent all that snuggly so it is nice to have a snuggly one in every now and again.

They do during the day but are not allowed at night, they've never tried but would get booted off. Luckily they tend to stay at the foot of the bed, I wouldn't want cat hair on my pillows particularly.

There are definitely some unhygienic aspects to cat ownership (walking on the worktops for example). But everyone's tolerance for this is different.

One of ours climbs onto the bed in the middle of the night, settles herself on my chest or shoulder depending on how I'm lying, purrs gently and strokes my face and hair. It's lovely. She'll stay there until my husband fidgets/bounces around and upsets her and she'll go off in disgust.

The other hides under the duvet when he's frightened of something, like the hoover.

I'm due our first baby in November and we'll have to start kicking them out but I hate the thought of it, I love feeling my hair being stroked by a purring kitty while I'm half asleep.

I don't get much say in it. I wake up with this one on or in my bed every morning

The only way we can stop the cats sleeping on our bed is by chasing them out of the room, and woe betide you if you forget to close the door behind you after a 3am trip to the loo. The only reason DH doesn't like them is because they wake him up in the morning, which disturbs his ritual of snoozing the alarm 19 times. I like the fluffy foot warmers (though not in this heat!)

Our current and recent cats are in the kitchen at night but pre-baby the cats were allowed on the bed at night. They never got in the bed as I didn't like that but used to just park on the end as a living hot water bottle, lovely.
