to let my cat sleep on my bed?

kitesfoorever · 19/07/2014 11:03

I've always done so, since a child (different cats obviously) but a friend of mine, who hates pets, said it's unhygienic. I suppose it is in a way, although I know cats like to clean themselves a lot.

I know it's hardly a study, but I rarely get ill, whereas my friend who's critical of me is constantly complaining of colds/coughs.

Aibu and unhygienic to let my cat sleep on my bed?

Our cat has her own pillow between our pillows. Every morning at sunrise she gets up and shoves me off my pillow and steals my pillow. I'll often wake up with her asleep on my arm or my arm is around her. She's a siamese so she's pushy.
I
She sleeps in the bed when it's not as hot.

Personally, I can't imagine anything worse (all those hairs!) But that's my bed. YANBU to let your cats sleep on your bed at all.

stealthsquiggle · 20/07/2014 00:29

I would be quite happy to have cats sleeping in the bed, but late lamented cat had taken to weeing / pooing wherever she chose, so she had to be confined to certain rooms, and we got out of the habit. New cats are hunters, and I really don't want to be wondering where in the hours they have left their corpses, or be presented with presents (alive or dead) in the middle of the night, so they too are shut out as far as the kitchen at night Hmm.

Childhood DCat used to sleep under the duvet, subtly moving me so that by the morning he would be right in the middle of the bed with me sleeping awkwardly around him (my childhood bedroom was bloody cold).

Ghirly · 20/07/2014 00:31

facedontfit the cat on the left of your photo is identical to my Tom cat. Beautiful.

I love all these photos!

2 of my cats sleep on DD1s bed and the other has her own spot on one of the stairs...

I don't allow the cats in DS2 or DD2s room but they're welcome anywhere else.

OP, YADNBU.

I hate not having a nice soft, warm animal on the bed. 'Hygiene' can go fuck itself, I'll take warm and snuggly anytime.

When I was very little the labrador used to share my pillow. Sadly he died, and the cats took his spot. I once woke up to a pair of wings at the side of the bed (can only presume the rest was eaten outside?) which was a bit odd, on account of the fact it was just wings Confused although to be fair not the oddest thing I've seen a cat drag in!

My cats are all gone now, back to having a dog. This one has his own pillow though. He's huge, like sleeping with a big dire wolf on the bed Smile

Cat in bed, paw is so I can't move. The grey fabric is my top, he likes to lie on me

Added to this I am totally under the paw, it's not even my cat... Grin

goodasitgets · 20/07/2014 00:49

Oh and if you press play button on this (you need volume!) you can hear the grumpy birman

Oooh I miss The Paw Of Move And I'll Scalp You I Swear To Bast I Will Grin

goodasitgets · 20/07/2014 01:01

Oh yes Grin
I vaguely think about moving and the paw sort of tightens on my arm, usually with a quick flex of the claws
He is slightly dim, gets lost under the duvet and cries until you rescue him

ravenAK · 20/07/2014 01:10

Good luck telling my Siamese he can't sleep curled up in the crook of my knees, under the duvet - he disapproves mightily of my habit of kicking the covers off in summer.

Although he did once have a catpanic, took a wrong turn, shot up my nightie & fought his way out. It was like John Hurt's chestburster scene in Alien...

Meanwhile, his sister (the cat's, not John's) lives on dd1's bed. Dd1 says this is fine, although she wishes cat would not raid her clean socks for trophies to shred on her pillow.

No chance of refusing in this house - they sleep where they choose - which is always our bedroom - and woe betide anyone who tries to refuse them !
Should we dare to close the door on them, and DH did in the early days of our relationship, then our pets just claw the door or the carpet (sometimes both alternately) until they are let into the bedroom.
Once inside they the choose where they please to sleep but it's normally on or in the bed depending on the outside temperature.
Yesterday morning we woke up with a dachshund and a cat asleep on the pillows between us and a border terrier and the second cat curled up on the bottom of the bed taking full advantage of the fan blowing in their direction.
DH and I had been pushed to opposite ends of the bed to make room for the more important occupants Grin
Our daschund whatever the circumstances or the weather will always sleep on or in the bed with us. If it's a cool night he cuddles right under the covers and snuggles in by the crook of my legs, in warmer weather he'll be up on the pillows - but always is in with his humans.
The cats and our other dog can be slightly more accommodating and will sleep on the floor occasionally but are always in the room with us in some shape or form.
The fact that DH is arguably the least pet friendly person on earth doesn't bother them in the slightest - they couldn't give a toss what he thinks and will always worm their way in Smile

DogCalledRudis · 20/07/2014 06:57

Our cat sleeps in our bed, the dog goes to DS2 bedroom, he's too big for bed.

goldopals · 20/07/2014 07:52

Nothing wrong with it. Mine used to all the time until I got a dog. The cat has not forgiven me yet :(

sashh · 20/07/2014 07:56

I would love the cat to sleep on the bed. Unfortunately she is going through a period of sleeping on me.

A few months ago it was the book shelf, but now it's me.

As you can see, we don't have much say in the matter.

to let my cat sleep on my bed?
Shockers · 20/07/2014 08:29

Shockercat has a night time ritual. He starts off on DD's bed, then has an hour or two on DS's bed before making his way into the small of my back at around 3am. At 6, he graduates to my upper body, where he purrs loudly and pats my face until I wake and give him some love.

Ours is the only house where DS's friend will stay the night because he can't get to sleep without a cat on his bed!

hiddenhome · 20/07/2014 09:22

Our cats sleep on the bed and go on the kitchen benches and none if have ever been ill yet Smile

to let my cat sleep on my bed?
MonterayJack · 20/07/2014 09:43

Beautifully there have been times when I've considered catnapping my friend's Burmese. He certainly isn't of the 'eat food and bugger off' type. He can be a bit high maintenance though in that he wants (and tries to make sure he gets) as much attention as possible. If I start to do anything on my laptop he will walk or sit on it and keep bashing me in the face with his foot. Anything to make it impossible for me to do anything other than stroke or cuddle him. He will sometimes go off by himself for a few hours snooze but when he wants his people he WANTS their full attention.

If my friend has people round to eat etc, he will sit in the centre of the table until friend chucks him off and out the room. If he doesn't like the choice of food dished up he will walk back to where his food is stored and stand there looking at the cupboard and shouting as if to say "get me something better". He is hysterical. I've not come across a cat quite like this one.

HotDogJumpingFrogAlburquerque · 20/07/2014 09:48

How do I upload an image?

AlberquerCat starts the night sleeping on my feet, then at about 4ish moves up to sleeping on my chest and purrs.

Once it gets to 6, I get gentle prods in the face, occasionally forcing my eyelid up so she can eyeball me. Once eye-contact is made it's game-over; she gets fed.

Beautifullymixed · 20/07/2014 09:51

Monteray I don't know how you've restrained yourself from stealing him for yourself.

When I get my precious-first-Burmese if she doesn't behave exactly like this I want a refund. I want a diva. Grin

Koothrapanties · 20/07/2014 09:52

Hot dog there should be a choose file button by the text box?

HotDogJumpingFrogAlburquerque · 20/07/2014 10:19

I get an error message saying jpeg is not a filetype that is allowed for photo.

Koothra, are you all doing this from a pc or your phone?

Anarchy99 · 20/07/2014 11:40

Beautifully if you get a boy they tend to be more cuddly. And yes to disrupting things if they want a cuddle - ours caused chaos until you picked them up - but nothing beats a warm purry Burmese snuggle!

Anarchy99 · 20/07/2014 11:43

Although girls are very snuggly too. We had litter brother and litter sister - the boy was slower to learn about jumping up etc so we put the treats on a shelf so he couldn't get them. Turned out not to be a problem though, his sister jumped onto the shelf and threw the packet down to him!

She also taught him how to rip open a sack of food - I walked into the kitchen to find the boy in the middle of a huge pile of food, eating as much as he could! They are certainly not dull! Grin
