to let my cat sleep on my bed?

I've always done so, since a child (different cats obviously) but a friend of mine, who hates pets, said it's unhygienic. I suppose it is in a way, although I know cats like to clean themselves a lot.

I know it's hardly a study, but I rarely get ill, whereas my friend who's critical of me is constantly complaining of colds/coughs.

Aibu and unhygienic to let my cat sleep on my bed?

In fact Beautifully you sound like the ideal 'owner' of a Burmese - it doesn't sound like you will need much training from your PFB! Grin

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 20/07/2014 11:58

Wow, I'm so glad my cats are the stand-offish type, it would drive me mad it they got on the beds, pestered us at mealtimes, forever interrupted us. They don't climb on laps either, they are the perfect cats for me!

theDudesmummy · 20/07/2014 11:58

I grew up in a house where all the animals slept on everyone's bed. As this was in South Africa we were always covered in flea bites and ticks etc. We just scratched and got on with it.

My parents (dog-mad people) still to this day sleep with between three and four dogs on/in their bed and several others crowded around on the floor. (Yes they are completely barking ha ha).

Personally, I could not do it any more. (I wouldn't mind a cat on a cold night but my old cat died earlier this year so there's no animal here now). But it never did us any harm in all the years I was growing up (Well I did get tick bite fever but so did everyone and who knows where the tick came from? I spent half my day out in the veld anyway).

Each to their own I say.

This is what I see as a peer over the top of my duvet of a morning.

And this is what confronted me as I went to brush my teeth last night!

He has fresh water in his bowl daily, but the fussy feline prefers a somewhat larger bowl Hmm

anarchy my babies have grown now (youngest is nearly 8) and I do miss it. I love all the toddler snuggling, but my moggies hide under the beds. Very ungrateful they are, they allow me a little tummy rub and kisses then off they go. Leaving me muttering about replacing them Grin

They are only just over one years old, so by the time I get my brick Burmese most kids will have gone. I shall be happy to have my talking partner, ready to 'help', and be my companion. Will probably get two. Double the love.

I wanted girls as I believed they would be more happy to be indoor cats rather than a tom. I do love saying 'my girls' and dressing them in pretty collars with charms .
I would however look at a brother/sister combo as well.

Can't believe I spent most of my life without a cat, will always have one now.Smile

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 20/07/2014 12:27

I'm the other way, I'm happy to have them here because DH and the DCs wanted them, and I am very fond of them but I wouldn't have pets if it was just up to me.

MonterayJack · 20/07/2014 13:29

Beautifully from what others have said on here, Burmese sound your sort of cat :) I didn't realise till this thread that the behaviour of my friend's mog is typical Burmese behaviour! I thought the attention seeking, shouting, following you everywhere, cuddling, talking was just him being him iykwim.

Sometimes I do get about irritated with him though because he can literally be 'in your face' when you least want him to be. But he's so loveable (and loving) that I always forgive him in the end.

My cat used to be very hands off and un-cuddly, so this dude is a real novelty to me.

Anarchy99 · 20/07/2014 13:54

Monteray ah yes, the Burmese 'give me attention NOW!' routine! It can take some getting used to! Does he give you 'head bonks' when he wants to be cuddled?

pippitysqueakity · 20/07/2014 14:19

Miss my old boy now reading these. Always went to bed with me and got up with me. Loved him

goodasitgets · 20/07/2014 14:46

The birman is currently lazing on the balcony alternating between sleep and taunting next doors dog Hmm
Every so often he dangles a paw just out of reach so the dog goes ballistic

SteeleyeSpanx · 20/07/2014 14:54

It's been shown over and over again that pet owners are ill less frequently than non-pet owners.

Nothing wrong with a bit of grubbiness - your immune system needs a workout from time to time.

Anarchy99 · 20/07/2014 14:56

goodasitgets Grin Poor dog!

goodasitgets · 20/07/2014 14:58

He's awful Blush
The other week two cats were hissing and scrapping a bit so he went over to stick his paw in, wound them up some more and then wandered off
He's like Norris from corrie

Anarchy99 · 20/07/2014 15:07

Grin Grin Awww he sounds brilliant!

Cyclebump · 20/07/2014 15:08

My cat sleeps in my bed a lot now that I'm pg. he was obsessed with guarding me last time too. He occasionally sleeps on DS's bed in the day but DS (3)is a wriggly sleeper so he rarely goes in at night. I didn't let the cat sleep in the cot ever (even if no baby in it) just in case he decided it was comfy and climbed in with baby.

Love my Mr Handsome, he's so much better to sleep with DH. Less hot and very bump attentive purring wise.

Lulu1083 · 20/07/2014 15:09

My cat sleeps where ever she pleases, and however she pleases! This does not look comfortable to me

I have high hopes for this newly rescued kittie, just need to get rid of all the fleas before he can come and sleep on our bed.

MonterayJack · 20/07/2014 18:15

Anarchy Yes he DOES do the head bonks. Sort of forehead to forehead! And patting on face with a foot to get you to pay more attention to him. The other night he positioned himself on the armrest of the sofa, then draped himself round my neck like a feather boa. He weighs a sodding ton! This was because he wanted me to move so he could sit where I was sitting (because he likes his seat pre-warmed!)

I love this thread too and all your cats are beautiful

halfdrunkcoffee · 20/07/2014 19:48

Ours often sleeps on our bed. I think it's fine.

SourSweets · 20/07/2014 20:09

My cat always sleeps on our bed, I love it. Night time cat kisses and purring noises are the best.

He knows the bed is ours though, because if we fail to clean his litter tray on exactly the sixth day he will piss on our bed in protest. If happened twice and we never forget now.
