to let my cat sleep on my bed?

I've always done so, since a child (different cats obviously) but a friend of mine, who hates pets, said it's unhygienic. I suppose it is in a way, although I know cats like to clean themselves a lot.

I know it's hardly a study, but I rarely get ill, whereas my friend who's critical of me is constantly complaining of colds/coughs.

Aibu and unhygienic to let my cat sleep on my bed?

Yes, the cat is being unreasonable to allow you to sleep on the bed.

BerylStreep · 19/07/2014 11:53

Ours both like to burrow under the duvet with me in the morning although they stay downstairs at night (unless DH is away). One of them sleeps stretched out like a human, with just her head poking out from the covers.

In fact, they are both curled up on my bed at the moment.

I can't stand prissy people who think they will catch the plague if a cat sleeps on their bed.

Nothing better in the world to waking up to a purring warm cat curled up beside you Smile

han3459 · 19/07/2014 12:04

I totally agree with your friend.but I don't think yabu as it's your house. I do think it's disgusting but each to their own. I would never stay in a house where the animals are allowed on the bed though

You wouldn't even get invited to mine Grin

BigcatLittlecat · 19/07/2014 12:10

Last night I shared my bed with a 14 week old kitten! love a purring cat on the bed!

diddl · 19/07/2014 12:14

We didn't intend to let the cat sleep on the bed, but she would scratch at the door/carpet outside the door.

We caved!

From some of the posts about farting, bed pissing OHs, I reckon a cat's a much better bet!

GerundTheBehemoth · 19/07/2014 12:26

Beryl, your cats are gorgeous! What breed are they?

My current foster cat sleeps on or in the bed but only when I'm there too. When I'm working he sleeps on my desk, and when I'm on the sofa he sleeps on my lap. He is velcro cat.

WellWhoKnew · 19/07/2014 12:26

I wondered the same thing this morning when I woke up, opened my eyes and intensively studied my cat's arse.

But I do like having the cat cuddles at night.

Anarchy99 · 19/07/2014 12:27

My cat always slept IN my bed! There's nothing wrong with it if you are happy with it!

Anarchy99 · 19/07/2014 12:29

Yes, the cat is being unreasonable to allow you to sleep on the bed.

Quite right. Why would he or she let a human share the bed - what about people germs! And why let the servants share the comfy place? [grins]

LEMmingaround · 19/07/2014 12:30

One of my dogs sleeps in our bed. Under the covers. I can't sleep unless he is there. I couldn't actually have a cat on the bed as I would be sneezing all night but the fogs hair is coarser so doesn't affect me.

patienceisvirtuous · 19/07/2014 12:41

To the people who are saying it's disgusting? What is actually disgusting about it? Cats are very clean. I know cat hair would bother some people but it's hardly disgusting...

Our cat usually snuggles into me from about 4am (prior to that her and the kitten are usually sprinting laps of the house)! Nothing better than waking up as a human sandwich between DP and warm, snuggly, purring mog :)

My cat sleeps on the bed, he is more hygienic than dh Grin, as long as you change the sheets regularly then I don't see a problem.

BetweenDogandWolf · 19/07/2014 12:55

YANBU! My three all sleep on beds, 2 on mine and 1 on DS's. Next door's cat sometimes sneaks in to sleep on DD's bed.

Pipbin · 19/07/2014 13:34

We actively encourage our cat to sleep on the bed. If she's not there we go and get her.

twizzleship · 19/07/2014 13:48

there is nothing unhygienic about it, if anything those of us who allow our cats on the bed are probably more 'hygienic' due to the extra hoovering and changing of sheets Grin

PhaedraIsMyName · 19/07/2014 13:51

twizzle er, um , nice try but probably not applicable in my case.

Lonecatwithkitten · 19/07/2014 13:55

I share my bed with 2cats and 1 dog (when the cats allow him).
The whole pets are unhygienic thing is unravelling recent research has shown that children who have pets in their household have less asthma and 18% less absenteeism from school. Added to the children with autism are verbal sooner if they live with pets and adults with Altzhemiers are verbal longer research it would seem that those of us who live with pets gain health benefits from them.

YANBU, I wish our DCat would sleep on our bed, she's got her own room spot in another room though.

NacMacFeeglie · 19/07/2014 14:06

Yanbu. I have a kitten that snuggles in bed with me most nights and I love it. Purrs me to sleep Smile

feekerry · 19/07/2014 14:14

both cats are out most of the night but one of them usually ends up at the bottom of our bed in the early morning.
i usually just give the bed a quick hoover whilst i am doing the rest of the house.
my cats are proper manky too lol!!

Plateofcrumbs · 19/07/2014 14:16

Half the fun of having a cat is having them on the bed for purrs and snuggles. Having a baby imminently and hoping the cat will behave herself so we don't have to lock her out.
