to let my cat sleep on my bed?

I've always done so, since a child (different cats obviously) but a friend of mine, who hates pets, said it's unhygienic. I suppose it is in a way, although I know cats like to clean themselves a lot.

I know it's hardly a study, but I rarely get ill, whereas my friend who's critical of me is constantly complaining of colds/coughs.

Aibu and unhygienic to let my cat sleep on my bed?

Ours are allowed on the bed, but they know they can't go on the pillows (they do this to piss us off) or on the underside of the duvet. They generally only want to sleep with us when it's cold though. The cat hair is a bit yucky but hey, my hair falls out everywhere and I think that's yucky too!

kitesfoorever · 19/07/2014 16:32

I'm loving all the cute photos, sounds like I.can carry on sleeping in my cats bed ;-)

Am marginally surprised no-one has said anything like Mrs Slocombe would yet!

I loved having my cats on my bed. Except they know when you're awake and would promptly demand food the second your eyes twitched open.

PhaedraIsMyName · 19/07/2014 16:57

The whole pets are unhygienic thing is unravelling recent research has shown that children who have pets in their household have less asthma and 18% less absenteeism from school. Added to the children with autism are verbal sooner if they live with pets and adults with Altzhemiers are verbal longer research it would seem that those of us who live with pets gain health benefits from them

I truly hope that is accurate. From personal experience it feels accurate.

Lonecatwithkitten · 19/07/2014 17:04

Phaedrals all accurate I am vet with a keen interest on human pet social interaction and regularly read papers on the subject. The school attendance study was published by Lincoln University last month.

BerylStreep · 19/07/2014 17:36

Gorgeous photos of all the cats. Venus is yours a Siamese?

Gerund mine are Burmese, mother and daughter, both lilac torties. They are very good natured.

MrsWinnibago · 19/07/2014 17:42

Mine is Beryl Grin

Corygal · 19/07/2014 17:44

I can't kip properly without Mr Cory in the bed. He allows me in most nights. In the morning a snuggle with a big furry tabby is a delicious way of waking up.

MedusaIsHavingaBadHairday · 19/07/2014 18:23

Whadda ya mean YOUR bed?!!!

Anarchy99 · 19/07/2014 18:27

Beryl and MrsWinnebago No wonder you are both so well trained - we have had meezers all my life, and Burmese in later years and their home, their rules! If they let you share 'their' bed, then it is a very very generous act!

Love all the pics!

SuzanneSays · 19/07/2014 18:37

We had to buy a super king size bed to accommodate our two cats me and my husband and we STILL end up on the edges while the cats stretch out comfortably in the middle!!!

samsam123 · 19/07/2014 18:38

I don't have a cat but my dog has always slept in my bed under the covers perfect in the winter when its cold no need for a hot water bottle

Beautifullymixed · 19/07/2014 18:48

Beryl

When I saw you mention Burmese cats my eyes widened and I immediately set about trawling through the pages for your picture.

Utter and complete beauty Smile

I absolutely love the look of the Burmese cat and their personality sounds fantastic too. I find myself drooling over breeders websites and am partial to the chocolate colouring. I love vocal, interactive cats and want to be owned completely Grin

My next cat will definitely be a Burmese and if I had space for another one now........

Anarchy99 · 19/07/2014 19:12

Beautifully Go for it - you won't regret it! They are amazing cats who generally love 'helping' with everything, and they love cuddles too. They are usually solid and I read somewhere that a Burmese feels like a brick wrapped in silk!

Be prepared for them to deliberately look miserable when you try to take a photo of your PFB (Precious First Burmese)!

Voodoobooboo · 19/07/2014 19:17

Mine have always slept on my bed. I have a pristine 1980s vintage cat bed that not one of the sods has so much as put a paw in? I mean why would they need when there is a much bigger more comfortable over there that is unoccupied most of the time.

Beautifullymixed · 19/07/2014 19:39

Anachy

The more I hear about Burmese the more I like.
I love the look of their solid body ,and love the description of the 'brick in silk' Grin

Beautifullymixed blackandwhitecat has a solid body of pure muscle and I love to bury my head in her tummy and roll her around. She feels so solid. She is also quite vocal for a moggy and I love how she greets us/calls to us while beautifullymixed tortiecat just sits there looking dopey beautiful.

I want a Burmese now....

Beautifullymixed · 19/07/2014 19:43

Oh and OP AIBU?

Hell no!

Wink
Anarchy99 · 19/07/2014 21:58

Beautifully You definitely need one (or two!) - they are so much fun, affectionate and so demanding of big cuddles!

FluffyPiggle · 19/07/2014 22:03

She'd love my parents springer then... especially at the moment he lays on their bed under the ceiling fan legs spread airing his nuts!!!

hiccupgirl · 19/07/2014 22:08

My big fat ginger boy cat loves to snuggle down between DH and me, with his head on the pillow and then you have to cuddle him like a teddy bear. I love dozing off to his purring.

I can't imagine not sleeping with the cats on the bed.

MrsSchadenfreude · 19/07/2014 22:14

I loved having both of mine on the bed but one developed an unpleasant habit of pissing on the bed, and then curling up in a different part. While I would still love for Tabby Boy to cuddle up with me, both are now banished from the bedroom because the grey and pink one spoiled it for them.

MonterayJack · 19/07/2014 22:42

I look after a friend's Burmese and he is an amazing character. Very clever and incredibly sociable. Just wants to be around people and likes everyone. He tells you if he wants anything. Shouts for his dinner, to be let in/out, if he wants a cuddle etc. When he comes into a room he meows very loudly to announce his presence. He's very endearing.

He is very very solid and heavy (and greedy). He runs up the stairs after breakfast and waits by the bed. When I get back in he jumps in after me and snuggles under the duvet and goes to sleep pressed into my leg or with his head on the pillow and his body pressed into my arm and shoulder. Awwww. I try to face away from him to avoid the tuna breath.

Beautifullymixed · 19/07/2014 22:57

Monteray. I laughed out loud at your post. Sounds so fabulous. I want a cat who cuddles, mine are on my bed but not cuddling me. I want 'brick' cuddles. Not cats running away except if you're offering food. Then the tarts are your best friends. Grin

I want a cat to talk to me all day long.
to replace my babies as kids are all growing up

ohfourfoxache · 20/07/2014 00:01

Er, we don't exactly get much say in the matter.....

Just to clarify, that is a kingsize pillow......

facedontfit · 20/07/2014 00:14

I love having the cats in the bed, far preferable to the OH and he knows it.
