Subway - Halal issue

CiderLover · 30/04/2014 16:04

I feel a bit annoyed that 200 Subway stores are removing their Ham and Bacon due to requests from their Muslim customers.

I think the process of producing Halal meat is cruel, but obviously that isn't an issue to Subway.

There are plenty of Subway stores that advertise their pork as being Halal so why this? It's not earth shattering stuff but ...

Should I move to a muslim country and want to open a strip club would that be allowed?

I've not read the whole thread but aren't subways franchises anyway? So a decision for the franchisee? I know one of our local ones was as he couldn't afford the rent so closed down but the owner of the other subway was going to buy him out?

I hope our one isn't a halal one as I saw their bacon sub/drink offer on tv the other day and fancied it before work on Saturday.

gordyslovesheep · 30/04/2014 19:03

'According to the latest results of the Food Standards Agency (FSA)’s Animal Welfare Survey, around 3% of cattle, 10% of sheep and goats and 4% of poultry in Great Britain are not stunned before slaughter. Although most animals slaughtered for the halal market are pre-stunned'

so 90% sheep, 97% cattle and 96% chickens - I agree less than 98% hence the use of the word 'around'

but more than 88%

and it is halal :)

SistersOfPercy · 30/04/2014 19:05

cant The FSA was due to carry out another survey in September 2013,
the results of which should be available in early 2014 according to something I've just read so the 88% figure could well be completely wrong.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 30/04/2014 19:08

Proper labelling means that those who wish to only consume Halal or Kosher can and those that wish to avoid it can. Those that are indifferent get to eat anything anywhere

Exactly - if everyone gets proper information then that's fair enough by me. What I object to is being sold or fed something under false pretences, and I don't care what the reason for that is. If the label says it contains something / doesn't contain it / has been treated in a certain way or anything else, then that's what it should be

Though I still don't understand why folks of a given persuasion (be that muslim or anything else) can't just order something to suit and simply ignore anything that doesn't ...

cantbelievethisishppening · 30/04/2014 19:09

gordy As I said.... You don't have an issue with 1000's of animals being bled to death without stunning. I do. You can talk %'s but when you consider the millions of animals that are slaughtered in the UK each year your small %'s suddenly don't look so small

gordyslovesheep · 30/04/2014 19:09

because 'folks of a given persuasion' want to go to subway and eat meat

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 30/04/2014 19:09

"Those pesky vegans, invading our country, making us eat their baba ghanoush."

Is there a Baba Ghanoush Party? Can I vote for them?

gordyslovesheep · 30/04/2014 19:11

do you know what % of your meat is slaughtered without stunning because it didn't work ...

cantbelievethisishppening · 30/04/2014 19:11

sisted yep.... Could well mean a shift in figures although can't see it would be significant given that the BVA are still trying to raise awareness of its campaign for a total ban based on animal welfare grounds.

PortofinoRevisited · 30/04/2014 19:11

I am still chuckling at the Halal Pork from the OP.

SistersOfPercy · 30/04/2014 19:11

I have never had a Baba Ghanoush
end self righteous moment

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 30/04/2014 19:13

It is a delicious Aubergine dip, Percy. You should get some immediately to dip halal sausages in

Barefootgirl · 30/04/2014 19:13

FFS, Subways are all franchises, so can make their own decisions. No-one, no matter how religious, would take ham and pork products off the menu if they were selling strongly, so the stores that have made this decision are those where they almost never sell ham or bacon anyway DESPITE HAVING IT IN STOCK FOR ANYONE WHO MIGHT WANT IT. If the individual stores see sales fall catastrophically after removing pork products from the menu, I expect they'll quietly put them back, but in reality, they're much more likely to see sales go up as they're probably in areas with a large Muslim population, who would be more likely to patronise a shop if it had a 'Halal' sign in the window.

Its not a sodding Sharia edict, its basic laws of supply and demand!

softlysoftly · 30/04/2014 19:13

Can't 98% of the universe of meat is stunned halal non halal figures.

Can you link your figures?

Tequila as stunning wasn't actually something that was around when the religious books were written there is a huge question mark over it. The Koran says the animal must be alive when bled. Most muslims don't care/ask if their meat was stunned first or not and any individual imam will have their own opinion. Trials have been run to show animals are alive in the time between stun and slaughter. So yes it is halal/kosher to stun first. Only a minority have an issue. I fact if we just stopped making a big deal about it and made a blanket law of no non-stun slaughter the majority of the muslim people in the UK wouldn't actually notice!

Caruthers abattoirs don't change the religion of their staff to run religious slaughter so no juice for UKIP outrage about blocking people from jobs there I'm afraid

cantbelievethisishppening · 30/04/2014 19:14

gordy I don't eat meat so your additional % would have no impact on me.

feathermucker · 30/04/2014 19:15

Its a business decision alone. There is a market for the Halal stores, therefore they have opened them.

Ranting about Muslims 'forcing' this decision makes you look ridiculous to be frank.

Of course predominantly Muslim countries will have different rules, laws and requirements; doesn't make it 'right' or 'fair'......also doesn't mean you have to go there Hmm

gordyslovesheep · 30/04/2014 19:16

so you don't have to worry about halal meat in Subway - well done you solved your own problem

cantbelievethisishppening · 30/04/2014 19:17

Mrs who has tried to 'tell you' that halal meat is a concern for the majority? It is not a concern for the majority. That is pretty obvious.

softlysoftly · 30/04/2014 19:18

*red meat btw I have no poultry figures which I supposecould account for the difference?

MagicMojito · 30/04/2014 19:19

Not read the whole thread (was getting far to deep and political) but does that mean they are stopping the meatball marinara? Good god, life would not be worth living :(

cantbelievethisishppening · 30/04/2014 19:20

softly some figures include poultry, some don't so that may account for disparities
