Subway - Halal issue

CiderLover · 30/04/2014 16:04

I feel a bit annoyed that 200 Subway stores are removing their Ham and Bacon due to requests from their Muslim customers.

I think the process of producing Halal meat is cruel, but obviously that isn't an issue to Subway.

There are plenty of Subway stores that advertise their pork as being Halal so why this? It's not earth shattering stuff but ...

Should I move to a muslim country and want to open a strip club would that be allowed?

Ooops, sorry. Blush

deakymom · 01/05/2014 00:00

it clearly states in the article they are bowing to pressure from muslim groups nothing to do with profit (according to them) and the meat in dd school is confusing first they say it is then it isnt they wont be drawn on the stun issue

as animals sometimes die from stunning many places prefer not to stun as the animal is unable to be eaten if it dies before its throat is slit (clear as mud isnt it) the animal needs to be alive at the point of slaughter to be considered halal (this is according to abraham natural produce) feel free to read the fatwa on stunning animals i did its a split issue i would hate to argue with the people in the article they can argue both sides of an issue most effectively Grin

Softly: "You will shortly receive your first free burka and uour DH will be pinned down and forcibly have bits of his knob chopped off."

And which tasty Subway filling will they turn that into?Hmm

Birdsgottafly · 01/05/2014 00:15

You can wear them with proper flat shoes.

Birdsgottafly · 01/05/2014 00:19

If you think that there is any ethics in what we do in the farming of Pigs, then you have contracted Mad Cow disease from all the (non Halal) beef you have been eating.

Caitlin17 · 01/05/2014 00:26

Birdsgottafly agreed. I don't like pork but do like bacon occasionally and only buy free range from Waitrose.

softlysoftly · 01/05/2014 00:28

Pastrami obv!

Birds too true at least the cows and lambs are bouncing around the fields for months. Anyone seen a large group of outdoor pigs recently?

Thought not.

pizzachickenhotforyou · 01/05/2014 00:33

Why would anyone want to eat at subway anyway?
Their shops make the street they're on smell of vomit.

TillyTellTale · 01/05/2014 00:50

it clearly states in the article they are bowing to pressure from muslim groups nothing to do with profit (according to them)

The article headlined Subway Adopts Sharia Law? That one? Look, I'm a hardline militant anti-religious git, who follows Richard Dawkins on twitter. And I call that article sensationalist anti-muslim wordage. It doesn't even mention that halal subways have been around for seven years.

There are over 1000 subway stores in Britain. 185 don't stock dead pig. You can use this to find the nearest one of the other 900+ stores.

The diverse multicultural population across the UK and Ireland means we have to balance the values of many religious communities with the overall aim of improving the health and welfare standards of animals," said a spokesperson.
That means, it makes commercial sense not to stock dead pig in 185 stores and to stock halal-slaughtered other animals, because they lose more customers through stocking the pork than they gain.

A couple of years ago Subway stopped selling sweetcorn as a filling. Not enough people wanted sweetcorn in their sub to justify each store/my local stores buying and preparing fresh sweetcorn every day.

I'm not being discriminated against! Simply not enough sweetcorn was sold. And that was sweetcorn. The only loss they were making on the sweetcorn was the cost of the sweetcorn. No-one is going to go to another sandwich shop because of a small tub of sweetcorn, but they ditched it.

With non-halal meat and pork, not only can stores make a loss on buying meat they can't sell, but they lose on custom altogether because customers actively choose to go somewhere else!

Caitlin17 · 01/05/2014 01:25

Not that it affects me at all but I see there are 8 Halal Subway shops in Glasgow. Whilst they might be selling halal meat I'd be surprised if they ditched bacon as well.

TillyTellTale · 01/05/2014 01:29

My town centre has three Subway stores. All pretty close to each other. Only one of them is halal-only. However shall we cope? Grin

We have two Greggs and an assortment of competing pasty retailers.

Ericaequites · 01/05/2014 02:09

I won't eat at Subway again.

Ohbyethen · 01/05/2014 02:31

Fucksache, if it's not Christmas it's half term if it's not half term/Easter it's the bloody summer break, if it's not that then it's the royal wedding/baby or a bloody election.

On my TIO 3/4 of the threads were deleted. It's goady bigot central.
Or can't manage a grown up paper anonymous.

As for the op - no they aren't. Walking in the other direction to the non halal store is not an infringement on your human rights.
There are very interesting studies on the ethics of halal slaughter vs non halal but they contain actual real science and aren't published on bias sites so are probably of very little interest.

I'm off to find Maryz.

mimishimmi · 01/05/2014 02:42

We live in a very Muslim area of Sydney. I can only think of a few large franchises that only have halal meat and usually that is because the franchisee is also Muslim. It's not an issue (well, apart from the fact I don't eat pork myself anyway). People just order ... something else....like chicken.

sashh · 01/05/2014 06:36

Wantsunshine

I can 100% promise you your ham and cheese was not halal.

Here we go again bowing down to the minority group.

No, here we go again with a company seeing a gap in the market and providing choice for their customers.

I quite like the idea of subway stores having sharia law. Does that mean if someone tries to steal from them the staff can come and chop their hand off with a bread knife?

MrsDV you have forgotten "someone told me..." Grin

TheDoctrineOfSnatch · 01/05/2014 09:17

And "statistics show that.." when no actual numbers are provided...

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 01/05/2014 09:19

Also 'when in Rome...'

ThePowerOfMe · 01/05/2014 09:38

Some of these people are so stupid. There's a boycott halal group that have even made an issue of McCain Chips being halal and the fact that local Fish and Chip shops sell halal fish and chips!

All vegetables and fish are halal. Chocolate is halal. Sweets and crisps are halal. OMG you're all eating halal all the time!!!

SunshineBossaNova · 01/05/2014 09:39

I think we've had most of these. My bingo card is almost full; I'm still waiting for 'creeping Islamisation'.

ThePowerOfMe · 01/05/2014 09:41

Actually some sweets are not halal. You're safe with most Haribos. Hust beware of the ones from Turkey...
