Subway - Halal issue

CiderLover · 30/04/2014 16:04

I feel a bit annoyed that 200 Subway stores are removing their Ham and Bacon due to requests from their Muslim customers.

I think the process of producing Halal meat is cruel, but obviously that isn't an issue to Subway.

There are plenty of Subway stores that advertise their pork as being Halal so why this? It's not earth shattering stuff but ...

Should I move to a muslim country and want to open a strip club would that be allowed?

OP posts:
nennypops · 30/04/2014 21:36

OP: I am saying that they can impose their religious beliefs in a non muslim country, yet there is no way I could impose my beliefs of umm taking my clothes off in a muslim country

Who's imposing any religious beliefs? They're not preventing anyone from eating non-halal meat, they are just saying that a small number of their restaurants can choose not to sell it.

"Adopted sharia law"

How untrue and fucking emotive. And I notice buried away in there among the RSPCA quotes etc is the fact subway as I predicted only buy pre stunned halal.

yet the article says sharia law only accepts nonstun.

so bollocks then

gordyslovesheep · 30/04/2014 22:21

nothing wrong with Muslims wanting to follow Islamic law anyway is there?

next people will be outraged by Christians reading the Bible

deakymom · 30/04/2014 22:22

its part of a larger problem personally i didn't mind ELC removing the pig from the farm they sold because you could ask for it at the checkout and when they did that the muslim community said it was unnecessary it is eating pork that is a problem not playing with toys (ive known a few muslims to watch peppa pig its non issue to them) its the removing bacon products from the store i really don't see the need sainsburys still sells bacon muslims shop there they just don't buy the product

basically i find it offensive they no longer sell the pork products because the implication is they can't enter an establishment with pork on the premises (wrong) or that people should be given no choice in the matter its forcing you into a lifestyle choice whether you agree or not

its bad for the animal there throats are slit while they are conscious

my daughter eats pork or vegetarian food at her school because its (other meat) rumoured to be halal she is 14 and has made a choice what to eat i back her choice

no chain/shop/person should bow to pressure from any religion

EduCated · 30/04/2014 22:23

So if your issue is them not selling pork, where so you stand on Nando's?

Birdsgottafly · 30/04/2014 22:24

"Oh and I hate the fact that halal means much of the animal is not eaten by believers. That's disrespectful and wasteful of the animal killed."

I'm Vegan (subway doesn't do a Vegan Bread and the Liverpool branches are non Halal).

Just to answer the above.

I feed my dog a raw diet, the meat comes from Halal suppliers (as does most raw dog food around the country), the meat has higher welfare standards and is better quality than you will find in Farm foods/Iceland/Value goods etc. that is why it is nutritionally sound, but low cost.

Every "high welfare" slaughter/farming business has constant "scandals".

Halal slaughter houses are inspected more often/rigorously.

In the area i shop/work, there are lots of Vegan shops, restaurants, so I am hoping that individual subways can stock a Vegan option.

gordyslovesheep · 30/04/2014 22:24

ONLY IN HALAL STORES - find a non halal one and shove all the pig you want into your face Grin

EduCated · 30/04/2014 22:26

They're not bowing to pressure. They're making a business decision that they clearly think will be profitable for them.

Also big difference between somewhere like a supermarket where meat is packaged and clearly separated, an somewhere like Nando's where it's open and in close proximity, and food may be prepared with the same utensils/gloves may not be changed etc.

softlysoftly · 30/04/2014 22:34

Deaky subway have made clear in the article you linked that they do not use non stunned halal. The animals were not conscious at the time of slaughter.

and if you daughter wants to make that choice fine but I would advise you ask that she make a choice based on fact not reaction. So ask the school who their supply is from as there is very little chance they are carrying non stunned halal meat.

alita7 · 30/04/2014 22:35

I've also seen KFCs that say (very discreetly) they only have halal meat... quite frankly I'm horrified... I want the choice to not have this meat, and some people may not notice that it says it serves halal meat.
These places should have a halal option if they want but continue to serve non halal meat too, don't people who arent muslim have rights anymore?
I don't want ANY religion shoved in my face, and I certainly do not want to have to miss out on the occasional fast food treat because they take it upon themselves to decide to feed us halal. I disagree completely with the way the animals are killed and have heard it can be unhygienic.
and more so I disagree with anyone moving to a country if they don't want to embrace the local culture (I feel the same about Brits in Spain).
Give me my bacon NOW!

TillyTellTale · 30/04/2014 22:39

Give me my bacon NOW!

How entitled!

Buying bacon is not a right.

gordyslovesheep · 30/04/2014 22:39

yes - you have the right to not eat meat Grin don't people who ARE Muslim have rights - or do your rights trump theirs because you are better?

all Halal meat if slaughtered to the same UK hygiene standards (if not better) as non halal meat

your fast food chickens are probably shoved in cages and treated like shit for their short lives - maybe that is a bigger issue

EduCated · 30/04/2014 22:41

Don't people who arent muslim have rights anymore?

Oh ffs, pork is not a right. You are perfectly welcome to buy what you want.

softlysoftly · 30/04/2014 22:48

Alita they are killed in the same way as non halal

Oh fuck it even I give up

yes the muslamic fundamental rayguns gave secretly changed the whole way the UK runs and sharia law now is the way we live. You have no rights anymore and all pigs are to be herded into the sea.

You will shortly receive your first free burka and uour DH will be pinned down and forcibly have bits of his knob chopped off.

gordyslovesheep · 30/04/2014 22:50

damn those Muslamics and their ray gun

they stole our bacon ...nooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Birdsgottafly · 30/04/2014 23:02

I wouldn't mind a Burka, I've hit my late 40's and I'm getting very scared about what I should/can wear this summer.

I daren't go near "style & beauty", I quite like maxi dresses.

cheekygeeky · 30/04/2014 23:04

Honestly the ignorance on this thread is alarming!

It isn't the Muslims who've made this decision, its the owners of the franchise ffs. It's a profit making decision. If anyone thinks that Muslims singlehandedly have the power to alter the types of food being sold then they really need to look around. Subway made the decision, not Muslims, based on profitability in certain areas.

I live in a mixed community and I see a lot of racism and prejudice hurled at what I know as a very friendly and peaceful Community.

cheekygeeky · 30/04/2014 23:05

Yes can I have a burqa too. Am really fed up of grey roots and a nice colourful hijab will be most useful.

BuzzardBird · 30/04/2014 23:20
