This is now the fourth thread in six months - which must say something about vaping. Thread 3 & links back are here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1985116-AIBU-to-carry-on-evangalising-about-electronic-cigarettes-Part-3?pg=1

For all new vapers I will again copy Allergic's great summary of what all the terms mean - but don't hesitate to ask anything about vaping

We all started from scratch & know what how very confusing it can be.

No question is to daft to ask - it really can be a minefield but it is a route to no more cigarettes! (nearly 18 months in for me!)

Allergic's great summary:

""A very simple guide for those who have been a bit overwhelmed by all the variety discussed on this thread. Experienced vapers either ignore, or check for errors please!

There can be a trade off to be considered around cost, variety, overall experience and hassle.

The cigalike ones are the simplest to deal with in that you just unscrew one cart & screw in another. These tend to be the type that you can buy at the local market or shopping centre for a comparatively cheap initial purchase, but the carts they use can be very expensive and tend to be limited in flavours/strengths depending on brand. They can be useful in that they are small, look the most like "real" cigs, and are the most hassle-free, but the experience really isn't as good as other methods and the cost is higher.

The next step is to have a battery and disposable tank type system (CE4 in my case) where you buy the different liquids and fill the tank yourself. The batteries last a few months to a year (about the same or a little longer than the cigalikes) and the tanks (clearomisers) last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months - this can be extended by cleaning, but the coils inside do eventually pack in. This method is much cheaper and gives a much more satisfying experience, but has the added faff of unscrewing and topping up the tank rather than just chucking the

You can then go further and use tanks that have replaceable wicks & coils, can be stripped down & "serviced" etc. There's also a lot of variety and complexity available in the overall set-up e.g. variable voltage batteries. All these add to the hassle factor but allow the overall experience to be much better fine tuned to suit the vaper. Cost is a moot point here - you will save money using serviceable tanks, but people that get really into this can spend a fair bit on shiney new toys!

When it comes to the "juice" or liquid there's a hell of a lot of different things to consider - nicotine strength, flavour, the balance of "throat hit" vs vapour etc. But basically there are 3 ways to get the right juice which are buy ready made from a big importer (limited options), buy made to order from a smaller supplier (needs to steep for a few days), or buy the makings & mix your own (hassle, mess & steeping). These have been ordered from minimum hassle/maximum price to maximum hassle/minimum cost.

I'm a naturally lazy person and comparatively new to vaping, so I have a battery & disposable tank system, and am currently buying imported juice (Hangsen pineapple and Smartjuice Red tobacco flavour) which I know has steeped plenty while being shipped over and both brands have very good quality control. I will probably go directly to mostly mixing my own once I get a bit more money at the end of the month to buy all the bits & base liquids, though will probably continue buying the Smartjuice tobacco flavour because I like it so much! I doubt I will go down the road of serviceable tanks unless I get a nice glass one eventually."

Sorry to hear about your dad, Bogey SadFlowers Is he still smoking or has he managed to stop?

If you click on 10ml tasters on the Joose Juice site they are all ready mixed. Find a flavour you fancy and click on it, then it will give you a choice of PG/VG ratio and nicotine strength. 18mg seems to be the average that most people start on so stick with that for now if it's working ok. It's worth getting a few different flavours at least to start with. You'll probably surprise yourself with what you like. Also, if it stops quite killing the cravings, changing flavour can work.

Other tips -

  • get at least two of everything as soon as you can afford to
  • most people get through around 2-5ml a day
  • most people vape more often than they used to smoke, but just a couple of drags each time
  • drink plenty - it can give you a dry mouth especially in the early days

Schro - there's a VTTV show called 'tin my tip' where they make mods out of all sorts of things. There are quite a few on youtube. The one I watched, they made a mod from a nintendo NES controller. What's he using at the moment?

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 01/04/2014 22:13

He's just using the one I started on, teeny battery and a cheap Ce4 type clearo... He wants a mini protank 2 (think he likes the vape on mines), a rotating drip tip and really, I just have to think of a battery and put it together. :)

FracturedViewOfLife · 01/04/2014 22:59

I just ordered some 10ml tasters from Joose Juice. Thanks Smile.

Cantabile · 02/04/2014 08:52

... and so it begins.

The Health Minister in Wales is introducing a White Paper banning vaping.

Please write to your MPs asking them not to do this. 10 letters from constituents on a subject are considered a flood.

From what I've heard this morning, the reasons stated are that they are a gateway to smoking and normalise smoking. Neither claim is substantiated by evidence.

If you don't know who your MP is, www.writetothem.co.uk will tell you.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 02/04/2014 09:15

Where the fuck is the logic in that? If that's the case then why not ban smoking (the one that's actually harmful in this scenario)!? Oh yeah, all that lovely tax money...

Bastards.

Should I be buying mods that take actual batteries for when this crap all comes in?

J ended up buying DP a pipe from Fasttech btw, very cool looking. Who wants to take bets when it turns up? :o

MaggieMcGill · 02/04/2014 11:53

Can someone please explain the dripping atomizer to me? I bought one last night to try since I have lots of new flavours coming. Thanks Queen for the link.

I've looked at the tutorial on the TW site and I thought the whole point of them was that you could try different flavours but do do need to wash the wicks in between flavours? If you don't surely the flavour that you prime the wick with will come through the next flavour?

QueenStromba · 02/04/2014 12:34

I found this video about dripping atomizers quite good:

QueenStromba · 02/04/2014 12:56

That's my plan Schro, I'll probably be getting an itaste 134 mini when Fast tech get them in. I noticed today that myepack have reduced the price of both the mini and the original to £75. I've got two MVPs and they feel like the vaping equivalent of a Nokia 5110 - I reckon I could chuck it out of my third story window and the pavement would come off worse! Assuming the 134 is built to a similar standard then it should well outlast the batteries.

The £25 Vamo V5 starter kit (includes batteries and charger) from Fast Tech is tempting me too although it doesn't look as sturdy as the 134. I'm handing in my thesis tomorrow so I'll probably buy myself one as a reward :)

Really though, I suspect that the likes of the 134 or MVP would make it through customs if it came to a ban anyway especially since Fast Tech tend to write 'spare parts' under the description.

Bogeyface · 02/04/2014 13:29

Can I ask long term vapers, do you ever plan to stop?

I view these as a stop smoking aid, I will reduce the nicotine amount gradually so after a while I am off nicotine altogether. My plan is to be off them by the end of the summer holidays.

Allergictoironing · 02/04/2014 13:50

I personally don't plan to completely stop, as I know I will just end up replacing the habit with something else. I am planning on reducing the nicotine levels over time. At the moment I'm happy to celebrate getting this far, which is better than I ever thought I could get.

magimedi · 02/04/2014 13:54

I have reduced my nicotine level from 18 to 12. I did drop down to 6 for a bit but have crept up to 12 again.

I haven't thought about stopping vaping. After nearly 40 years of smoking I'm just so happy to have found a way to quit.

OP posts:
FracturedViewOfLife · 02/04/2014 14:02

I quit smoking cold turkey 9 and a half days ago. On the first day I remembered I had an e-cig in my drawer so I ordered some 0% juice which arrived on day 3. Just having something to puff on when I had really bad cravings really helped.

I plan on using it for the next couple of months. It is cheaper and better for me than eating cake all the time which I did for the first two days Grin

Ledare · 02/04/2014 14:23

Off topic, I never imagined I would like banana flavour (thought it would taste like grim banana flavoured medicine of childhood) but it's lovely!

It tastes like the banana sweets in the pick and mix, and goes beautifully (as the sweets do) with chocolate Smile

QueenStromba · 02/04/2014 16:55

I love vaping, even if I ended up on no nicotine liquid (unlikely since I'm a massive nicotine addict and don't see the harm in it) I'd still vape. It's really nice to get the flavour without having to eat or drink something. I never eat biscuits because I'm gluten intolerant and they're really unhealthy but I love a cookie vape with my morning coffee. I've always loved shisha so to have something like that without all the faff that I can carry around with me is the best thing ever as far as I'm concerned. It really was a case of 'where have you been all my life' when I got my first proper kit.

I mix my own liquid (have done pretty much right from the start because I wanted lychee flavour at it wasn't available pre-mixed) and have something silly like a ten year supply of nicotine in the freezer (drunk shopping and didn't work out how long it would last until after I ordered - only £120 though) plus about a litre of PG. The only thing I need to buy now to make my liquids is the flavouring (although I already have quite a few flavours) and the odd bottle of glycerine from Boots. Even counting the cost of the stuff I've already bought my liquid costs about £5 a month and my coils less than £5. So consumables for the month for about the cost of a pack of fags.

So vaping is cheap (even with the odd shopping accident), I really enjoy it and it keeps me off the sweets. They'll be prying whatever the latest cool mod is out of my cold, dead hands.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 02/04/2014 17:39

Maggie Just wanted to say thank you! I recieved that today and really cheery over it! I'm sending yours tomorrow as had to buy smaller envelopes today! :)

MaggieMcGill · 02/04/2014 19:07

Thanks for the link Queen. I'll nip into boots tomorrow and get some VG to prime and flush the wicks. Is that right? Has yours been dispatched yet? I don't think mine has.

You are welcome Schro, I'm just glad that it's getting used. I still have some left to get through. No rush for mine. Just so that you know, I first bought a 10ml of this and liked it so I got the 30ml bogof that jj do. It tasted quite weak so I got the concentrate and added it to both 30ml bottles. You may need to do the same if you order more.

I arrived home tonight to a package from liberty flights, if anyone is interested they have a nice vanilla berry on sale this week for £2.50. I think they change the offer each week. This is the first time I've tried there stuff and it's rather nice.

Shonajoy · 02/04/2014 19:44

Well I ordered my MVP2 from amazon last Friday and no sign of it. The guy said it was in stock, so I've written to him asking if they are in stock, he's given me no Royal Mail tracking number, and it's now saying delivery could be up till the 7th. I'm really pissed off. I was polite, but I need it for the weekend and doesn't take 11 days to receive an item (from the uk) surely?

I've said if I don't hear from him I will send it back if it does arrive, and order from another seller- irony is its amazon prime.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 02/04/2014 20:10

I will remember that about the concentrate Maggie. :)

Apparently my fast tech order has been shipped? I ordered it last night. Confused

SoleSource · 02/04/2014 20:29

Loving a good va pe tonight Grin

Did anybody watch the BBC news report wrt vaping tonight?

I missed it but will have a look on BBC news site.

SoleSource · 02/04/2014 20:31

Fabulous magi med. You suggested trying a v a per in pm to me once. I thought about it for a while. Thanks to your suggestion I have quit the stinky's xx

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 02/04/2014 20:39

Sole Well done for keeping off the fags! I couldn't go back to them now, DP and I were saying today how much you can smell it in doorways to shops and stuff. Once you smell it again you realise why so many people say it's so rank! I never realised before.

Have vaped a full tank of that orange cream tonight, must can't stop with this stuff, it's so bloody lovely.

SoleSource · 02/04/2014 20:42

Very true Schro and thank you

www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-23196369

This evenings e c I g report.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 02/04/2014 21:38

This is this evening's coverage

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-26837682

I am very very heartened by the BBC's coverage of this - it's the first properly balanced reporting I have seen.

I haven't read the text bit yet or the 1429 comments!

I know where the welsh guy is getting his BS research from. It's this guy called Stanton Glantz in the US who has the ear of WHO. He produces very shoddy research which Clive Bates has had fun debunking over the last few weeks.

I'm sensing a bit of a sea change in attitudes Smile This may disappear when I have read the comments. Is there a bunfighty thread on MN about it yet?

Bogey, I have no intention of giving up vaping or cutting nicotine. I won't be unhappy if I just cut down naturally like some have on this thread (if everything starts tasting burnt no matter what you put it in, try lowering the nic). Don't be put off though, if that's what you want to do - lots of people do quit vaping successfully. It's supposed to be easier to come off than fags because it's a much gentler intake of nicotine.

Queen, I'm not sure the MVP is so durable. I think I damaged mine when I fell over last week. Since then the battery life has got noticeably shorter - I barely get 2 days from it and it goes from green to red in a few minutes when it used to stay on orange for at least a couple of hours. Worst of all, it's started to get warm when I use it so I think it's on its last legs and I'm not sure I fancy charging it as it's making me nervous. I'll stick it on for 10 minutes tomorrow and observe closely.

magimedi · 02/04/2014 22:16

Sole - Well done, you! What a star you are!

Personally, when I look round here & have seen 4 new vape shops open this year (just within 20 miles of of me) I think that the economic consequences of regulation are going to be vote costing for our 'dear' politicians. Therefore, I reckon the whole raft of regs that are mooted now will be very much changed (in our favour) by 2016.

OP posts:
QueenStromba · 02/04/2014 22:17

That's a shame plenty :( Do you think another battery would have survived the impact? From the photo and the fact that you grazed your hand too it seems like you landed quite hard on it. FWIW both of my MVPs seem to go almost straight to green to red but if it's getting hot then it's probably not a good sign.
