This is now the fourth thread in six months - which must say something about vaping. Thread 3 & links back are here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1985116-AIBU-to-carry-on-evangalising-about-electronic-cigarettes-Part-3?pg=1

For all new vapers I will again copy Allergic's great summary of what all the terms mean - but don't hesitate to ask anything about vaping

We all started from scratch & know what how very confusing it can be.

No question is to daft to ask - it really can be a minefield but it is a route to no more cigarettes! (nearly 18 months in for me!)

Allergic's great summary:

""A very simple guide for those who have been a bit overwhelmed by all the variety discussed on this thread. Experienced vapers either ignore, or check for errors please!

There can be a trade off to be considered around cost, variety, overall experience and hassle.

The cigalike ones are the simplest to deal with in that you just unscrew one cart & screw in another. These tend to be the type that you can buy at the local market or shopping centre for a comparatively cheap initial purchase, but the carts they use can be very expensive and tend to be limited in flavours/strengths depending on brand. They can be useful in that they are small, look the most like "real" cigs, and are the most hassle-free, but the experience really isn't as good as other methods and the cost is higher.

The next step is to have a battery and disposable tank type system (CE4 in my case) where you buy the different liquids and fill the tank yourself. The batteries last a few months to a year (about the same or a little longer than the cigalikes) and the tanks (clearomisers) last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months - this can be extended by cleaning, but the coils inside do eventually pack in. This method is much cheaper and gives a much more satisfying experience, but has the added faff of unscrewing and topping up the tank rather than just chucking the

You can then go further and use tanks that have replaceable wicks & coils, can be stripped down & "serviced" etc. There's also a lot of variety and complexity available in the overall set-up e.g. variable voltage batteries. All these add to the hassle factor but allow the overall experience to be much better fine tuned to suit the vaper. Cost is a moot point here - you will save money using serviceable tanks, but people that get really into this can spend a fair bit on shiney new toys!

When it comes to the "juice" or liquid there's a hell of a lot of different things to consider - nicotine strength, flavour, the balance of "throat hit" vs vapour etc. But basically there are 3 ways to get the right juice which are buy ready made from a big importer (limited options), buy made to order from a smaller supplier (needs to steep for a few days), or buy the makings & mix your own (hassle, mess & steeping). These have been ordered from minimum hassle/maximum price to maximum hassle/minimum cost.

I'm a naturally lazy person and comparatively new to vaping, so I have a battery & disposable tank system, and am currently buying imported juice (Hangsen pineapple and Smartjuice Red tobacco flavour) which I know has steeped plenty while being shipped over and both brands have very good quality control. I will probably go directly to mostly mixing my own once I get a bit more money at the end of the month to buy all the bits & base liquids, though will probably continue buying the Smartjuice tobacco flavour because I like it so much! I doubt I will go down the road of serviceable tanks unless I get a nice glass one eventually."

Yes, I did land very hard, my hand is still healing. I think any other battery would probably have been in several pieces!

You can buy it from their website I think. I bought the most beautiful tasting grape from them yesterday, vaping that atm, it's lovely and tastes like Fanta Grape! :o DP got one called "airblast" it tastes like airwaves chewing gum and the menthol knocks your head a bit it's that strong.

So, I also bought a new drip tip, loving my vape more and more each day and I think I am going to buy the cool fire II next, found out my shop sells it...

SoleSource · 03/04/2014 13:37

I went to the VVaper shop today. Bought a wall plug charger and choc mint liquid. I saw the drip tips. I'm going to a vape meet next Friday in the pub Grin

QueenStromba · 03/04/2014 13:48

That's rather funky looking Sole. What's the tank - I don't recognise it (which is odd for me!).

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 03/04/2014 13:54

That looks like a weird sex toy a mini protank 2 with a tasteful fasttech swivelly drip tip on it. Love it! Grin

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 03/04/2014 13:57

Haha, does look a bit sex toy, doesn't it? :o It's a pink eGo c Twist, mini protank 2 and bizarre rotating drip tip and some charms. I'm loving it! :o

Dark Star liquids came today and sure enough I got lime free! Battery has cut out. :( On charge and will try kiwi in about 30 mins. Hehehe

QueenStromba · 03/04/2014 14:02

It's amazing how much difference the addition of the bit with the charms on and changing the drip tip makes to the look of it! I know what a protank 2 looks like.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 03/04/2014 14:47

I know, makes. huge difference. :) Probably wont use that drip tip in public though...

Vaping darkstar kiwi crush, think it needs steeping, weak taste.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 03/04/2014 14:49

However I think it must be high PG as it's killing my throat. :(

QueenStromba · 03/04/2014 17:08

Woo - I've handed in my thesis and have bought myself the vamo V5 starter kit from Fast Tech as a reward.

My Darkstar has arrived too, I have two bottles of lime. Tried the lime and that is weak too, let's hope it improves in a week or so. I think I read on the website it was 70/30 pg but I might be getting that confused with something else.

SoleSource · 03/04/2014 18:21

Soles Grin

The lower the mg of nicotine, the better flavour?

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 03/04/2014 19:25

EatShit - I hope it's still there! Could be worse, it could have been in your bag and had juice spilt on it. Every cloud ... Mind you, I think they're a bit more waterproof than phones.

Sole - The lower the mg of nicotine, the better flavour? No, they're not related. Some liquids require 'steeping' to allow the flavours to come out. This can involve -

  • arcane, Breaking Bad-style chemical rituals involving airing cupboards, warm baths and lots of jiggling
  • trying not to vape it for a few days
  • anything inbetween

Yay Queen, well done on the thesis! I'm not sure about the vamo kit. I want a vamo but am unsure of the battery quality from fasttech. I might just order the tube from FT and get the batteries from whatever the top brand is - Efest rings a bell?

QueenStromba · 03/04/2014 20:00

Thanks Plenty - it feels so good to have it handed in and I'm sure the facial twitches will subside soon!

I trust FT more than most suppliers for batteries. They have quite a few that are listed as e.g. "2000mah" (with the quote marks) but with an actual measured by them mah value in the description which is often a lot lower than the advertised one. I think it's bloody good of them to test batteries and point out when they're not as good as advertised - I don't know another supplier that does that.

Dwerf · 03/04/2014 20:40

My Darkstar came today also, that's pretty good for delivery. Havent tried any yet but I'm going to give the Black Fire a go first.

I've been smoking cigs for a couple of days (shit headspace) but back to vaping now.

SoleSource · 03/04/2014 21:24

I have bubble gum, Choco mint and menthol all mixed

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 03/04/2014 22:41

Changed my mind about Darkstar, I put some of their sweet strawberry in with the kiwi and it tastes like twister ice lollies! Yummy!

JazzyCardi · 04/04/2014 02:57

Can you help me, please.

I am desperate to give up smoking and have so far bought 3 different ecigs. They've all been rubbish cigalikes - no throat hit and hardly any vapour Sad

I've got a few hundred quid (birthday money) and I want the best I can get for that.

Any suggestions?

Thanks Thanks

Allergictoironing · 04/04/2014 06:11

Hello JazzyCardi, and welcome.

"The best" is a very subjective thing. I prefer minimal hassle, some people love to fiddle to optimise their experience. Some people like kit that is at least the same sort of shape as a cigarette, others prefer something that is as far away in shape as they can get. To bling or not to bling?

I really don't know enough to recommend "the best", one of the longer term vapers like Queen or Plenty who have researched all the mods out there can do a much better job of comparison than me. I can tell you that even a half decent tank & battery set up will give you a vastly superior experience compared to a cigalike, and even top end kit shouldn't cost you £100 to get set up initially (unless you insist on gold & diamonds of course!). And the range of flavours available compared to having to use disposable cigalike cartomisers is phenomenal, which also helps - I probably wouldn't have managed to give up completely with the bog standard "tobacco or menthol" flavours available for most cigalikes.

Hopefully one of the really clued up ladies will be along later this morning with some brilliant recommendations that suit you Smile

magimedi · 04/04/2014 08:34

hi Jazzy - lovely to see another face here.

Another way is to go to your local vape shop & ask them for a starter kit. You may pay another couple of £ but you will be given so much help & advice & be shown how the whole thing works, which is worth a lot.
Most shops also let you sample a couple of flavours as well. Basic ego battery kit + a bottle of liquid will set you back no more than £25 & then you can go on from there.

Hi Jazz! I'm a newbie here too and have had great advice. I've just tried hanggsen lemon sherbet for the first time, and omg think it's the best I've tried so far! YUM! I've stopped smoking before but have never been so utterly convinced I'm never going back. I LOVE not smelling of smoke, my hand dermatitis has gone (constantly washing my hands) never mind the health and saving a fortune angle x

QueenStromba · 04/04/2014 13:23

Hi Jazzy. It really depends what you want from your kit. Plenty and I both have MVP 2s (also available with pretty patterns and designs). They're solidly built and have a battery that lasts a couple of days between charges and does variable voltage and wattage so you can whack up the power. It also reads ohms so if you want to get into building your own coils down the line you'll be able to check the ohm rating with it. You can also use it while it's charging and it has a usb output so you can charge your phone off it in an emergency.

Then there are a whole host of devices where you have to buy the batteries separately. These are good because you can carry spare batteries for them when you're out and about. Here's a few innokin ones, the main difference between them is looks:
itaste mini 134
cool fire 1
cool fire 2
itaste SVD
itaste VTR

There's also the Vamo V5 which is quite popular.

Shonajoy · 04/04/2014 13:40

My mvp2 arrived! And also some skins to bling it up if I feel the urge. Put it all together but a, waiting for dh to come home before I charge it in case I blow it up. I'm very excited! X
