This is now the fourth thread in six months - which must say something about vaping. Thread 3 & links back are here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1985116-AIBU-to-carry-on-evangalising-about-electronic-cigarettes-Part-3?pg=1

For all new vapers I will again copy Allergic's great summary of what all the terms mean - but don't hesitate to ask anything about vaping

We all started from scratch & know what how very confusing it can be.

No question is to daft to ask - it really can be a minefield but it is a route to no more cigarettes! (nearly 18 months in for me!)

Allergic's great summary:

""A very simple guide for those who have been a bit overwhelmed by all the variety discussed on this thread. Experienced vapers either ignore, or check for errors please!

There can be a trade off to be considered around cost, variety, overall experience and hassle.

The cigalike ones are the simplest to deal with in that you just unscrew one cart & screw in another. These tend to be the type that you can buy at the local market or shopping centre for a comparatively cheap initial purchase, but the carts they use can be very expensive and tend to be limited in flavours/strengths depending on brand. They can be useful in that they are small, look the most like "real" cigs, and are the most hassle-free, but the experience really isn't as good as other methods and the cost is higher.

The next step is to have a battery and disposable tank type system (CE4 in my case) where you buy the different liquids and fill the tank yourself. The batteries last a few months to a year (about the same or a little longer than the cigalikes) and the tanks (clearomisers) last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months - this can be extended by cleaning, but the coils inside do eventually pack in. This method is much cheaper and gives a much more satisfying experience, but has the added faff of unscrewing and topping up the tank rather than just chucking the

You can then go further and use tanks that have replaceable wicks & coils, can be stripped down & "serviced" etc. There's also a lot of variety and complexity available in the overall set-up e.g. variable voltage batteries. All these add to the hassle factor but allow the overall experience to be much better fine tuned to suit the vaper. Cost is a moot point here - you will save money using serviceable tanks, but people that get really into this can spend a fair bit on shiney new toys!

When it comes to the "juice" or liquid there's a hell of a lot of different things to consider - nicotine strength, flavour, the balance of "throat hit" vs vapour etc. But basically there are 3 ways to get the right juice which are buy ready made from a big importer (limited options), buy made to order from a smaller supplier (needs to steep for a few days), or buy the makings & mix your own (hassle, mess & steeping). These have been ordered from minimum hassle/maximum price to maximum hassle/minimum cost.

I'm a naturally lazy person and comparatively new to vaping, so I have a battery & disposable tank system, and am currently buying imported juice (Hangsen pineapple and Smartjuice Red tobacco flavour) which I know has steeped plenty while being shipped over and both brands have very good quality control. I will probably go directly to mostly mixing my own once I get a bit more money at the end of the month to buy all the bits & base liquids, though will probably continue buying the Smartjuice tobacco flavour because I like it so much! I doubt I will go down the road of serviceable tanks unless I get a nice glass one eventually."

Kippers, I feel for you and also for your OH. I smoked at home until a year ago when I started using ecigs, now I use them in the same way (no children but one v v spoiled DCat). My OH dislikes me using my ecig in places where I couldn't smoke - restaurants, etc. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't, but I would never use it on a train, in the cinema etc.

I think he should be more sensible about it. Basically what he's doing is taking a x-a-day fag habit and replacing it with a 10x-a-day ecig habit, which isn't great.

I had rules about smoking: no fag until I'd done my exercise for the day etc. Why not encourage him to use it in the same way - as a pleasurable reward, not a habit?

And for the long-time ecig users... I discovered today that I can prise the cap off my filter thingys and top them up with e-liquid. Win, or what? Have never liked the tank systems, they're fugly.

Dwerf · 06/03/2014 23:44

Allergic Yeah, I know. I'll start mixing this strength with the one below soon.

Amethyst yeah, I top my cartomisers up, I've got a cigalike for when I'm out and about bevause it fits ever so neatly in my jeans pocket.

Dwerf · 06/03/2014 23:46

Hadabadday Are you using a high enough strength liquid?

I kept going back to cigs because I use them as a self-harm tool. I know damn well I do. So now I'm feeling more on top of life I hope to stick to vaping.

HadABadDay2014 · 06/03/2014 23:47

I think I am, 18mg I think

Dwerf · 06/03/2014 23:57

You could try the stronger one? It's either 24 or 26mg

MistressDeeCee · 07/03/2014 06:51

A new thread, yayGrin

Been off the cigs since September last year and plan to never have a cig again. Feel so much better (& richer) now

On a shopping trip to Greenwich market ended up wandering all the way along Woolwich Road..and discovered there are 2 vape shops there. One is a newsagent..walked in to buy some sweets and was faced with an array of e liquids on shelf, + batteries & starter kits. I bought a good kit there for £20. I order from Vape Escape but good to know if Im out and have forgotten to order, there's an 'emergency stop' available even if not that near me.

The other is a dedicated vaping shop, almost opposite but it is VERY expensive..however they have lots of shiny kit in there so its tempting...

Theres a vaping shop in Greenwich Town Centre but alas, they seem to be phasing out e liquids and going more for e-cigs..& nowadays they barely have those.

& a newsagents by Covent Garden station which has e-cigs and e liquids too (not a wide choice of liquids tho). I bought an e-cig there as I was off to the cinema and had forgotten my vaping stuff at home (aka crisis on a par with Armaegeddon)

Just thought Id mention as Im another who thought there were barely any vape shops in London, but maybe theyre iincreasing now...

Allergictoironing · 07/03/2014 07:04

HadABadDay everyone is different in how they are able to give up (if at all), and there could be a number of reasons why you've struggled in quitting.

Questions to ask yourself include:
Do you make it less hassle for yourself to vape your e-cig than smoke a cigarette? e.g. e-cig is always to hand, real cigs are always shut in a drawer the opposite side of the house so you have to make a lot more effort to smoke than to vape.
Have you found a flavour that you really enjoy with the e-cigs rather than one that will just do, or the one you think is closest to real cig flavour? This is a particular help for people who use cigarettes as a reward system.
Check that they system you are using is one recommended by the ladies on this forum, or at least that you've tried different delivery systems. e.g. I tried a cigalike a couple of times, and at best that helped me to halve my cigarette usage. A decent battery & tank system has helped me quit completely, as I find the vaping experience a lot more satisfying. There's also quite a bit of difference even between the various brands of cigalike, and once you get onto tanks there is almost too much variety.
Ask yourself if at the back of your mind you aren't resenting having to give up. I found that dong something because I have to rather than because I genuinely want to tends to bring out the stubborn streak in me.

Allergictoironing · 07/03/2014 07:12

Yay thanks MistressDeeCee, Woolwich is reasonably close to me and almost a bearable journey, so could be worth a trip especially for the dedicated shop with the shinies....

Allergictoironing · 07/03/2014 07:16

Oh and Amethyst did you know that you can get a cigalike battery that takes a mini tank on it? So it looks pretty much like a cigalike (same size, almost the same general look) but has many of the advantages of a tank system? There's an example here - a friend uses these because she hates the look & bulk of most tank systems.

Sorry for all the posts this morning ladies - still not properly awake & keep thinking of things I forgot to say Blush

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 07/03/2014 08:11

Can anyone help me please? My vape pens have been pretty much un-useable since yesterday and I admit I am now starting to struggle.

Both of them taste burnt, it's horrid.

The little one I don't touch as that's DP's really but mines, I have wiped the battery, emptied all of the juice, blown the tube out and put in different juice. Now have menthol and it's marginally better but still tastes rank.
I only bought it a week ago today, and started using it the next morning. If I have to replace bits already it's going to end up just as expensive as smoking! :(

MistressDeeCee · 07/03/2014 09:43

Allergictoironing Im just thinking it would be more helpful if I actually knew shop names! & theyre on Trafalgar Road in Greenwich, not Woolwich Road don't know why 'Woolwich' was in my mind

The vape shop is just a few doors away from a restaurant called Caribbean Inn which you can't miss..it has a huge pic of Bob Marley in the window and is fully painted in (very bright) Red Gold & Green! tickled me seeing that in Greenwich area..how times have changed Grin & I saw a couple of women standing chatting outside there vaping, too.

The newsagents is next to a church, almost opposite vape shop. Its all happening in Greenwich, it seems..

magimedi · 07/03/2014 09:52

Oi!! Allergic This doesn't excuse you from coming down my way sometime!!! Grin

Can someone tell me what to do about burnt taste? I bought GS-H2s and one of them is very yucky :(

Ledare · 07/03/2014 10:11

There's a thread with a couple of ideas about burnt taste here:

www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/new-members-forum/363346-burnt-taste-ego-c-twist.html

Ledare · 07/03/2014 10:20

The Youtube search suggestion seems quite helpful.

MsIngaFewmarbles · 07/03/2014 10:32

Thanks I'll have a look.

QueenStromba · 07/03/2014 10:35

What tank have you got Schro? I find some last longer than others before they taste burnt. The iclear 16 and iclear 30 are both great. myepack.co.uk has good prices for both. In the mean time remove the atomiser if you can and soak it in vodka for a while, dry off the wicks and reattach it to your tank with no liquid in it and then dry burn it until you get no smoke coming off the coils.

MsInga - apparently the burnt taste in the GS-H2s is due to too much wick in the atomiser. You can take off the metal post on the top and remove a thread or two of wick.

Amethyst24 · 07/03/2014 10:41

Thanks Allergic x

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 07/03/2014 13:03

Queen, it was just the one that came with the kit. Went out and bought a new tank, one to change wick and fill from the bottom. And Opal Fruits liquid!
Guy at the vape shop told me that they do sell pineapple but they don't display it as it's only good in glass tanks? He said it cracks tanks normally? :/

Allergictoironing · 07/03/2014 14:09

Schro I've been using the Hangsen pineapple in the same cheap CE4 standard plastic tank for over a month now, no cracking. Think the atomiser may be on it's way out soon, but no other problems at all. I think it's dependant on the make of flavourings they use whether they cause a problem with plastic tanks or not, as I see some places have a warning and some not for pineapple.

Magi certainly not! Eastbourne is my number 1 next destination for bricks and mortar vape shopping. Just have to wait until I have enough money for petrol/parking, a couple of coffees and maybe a shopping accident or two Wink.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 07/03/2014 14:22

Definitely better to go with Hangsen Pineapple then? Not loving opal fruits unfortunately.
I don't even think my tank is plastic, it feels like metal. It's a kangertech evod? Whatever that is! :o

Ledare · 07/03/2014 14:22

I use a glass candle holder for putting my stick in and cotton buds in - it's like a classy ashtray.

Have just put my spinner into my coffee by mistake! It would have to have been that one. My normal battery wouldn't have been affected as there wasn't much liquid left but it's all gone into the dial bit

Allergictoironing · 07/03/2014 14:27

Schro I wouldn't say definitely better, but it hasn't affected my plastic tanks so far...

Aw Ledare honey, your poor precious! You may want to rinse it off quickly (definitely if you take sugar) then get it on a towel on the radiator asap. If you have any of that silica gel stuff they use to keep thinks dry put it in a box with that. In fact, Google advice on what to do if you drop your smartphone down the loo & follow that! Lovely as the spinner is, a smart phone is a lot more delicate & complex so if they can recover then so can your battery.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 07/03/2014 14:31

Ledare, try putting it in rice for 24 hours? Hope it works again!

Allergic, going to order the pineapple today, will take the chance! Loving this new tank, juice tastes so much better in it.

Ledare · 07/03/2014 14:36

Thank you Flowers
