This is now the fourth thread in six months - which must say something about vaping. Thread 3 & links back are here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1985116-AIBU-to-carry-on-evangalising-about-electronic-cigarettes-Part-3?pg=1

For all new vapers I will again copy Allergic's great summary of what all the terms mean - but don't hesitate to ask anything about vaping

We all started from scratch & know what how very confusing it can be.

No question is to daft to ask - it really can be a minefield but it is a route to no more cigarettes! (nearly 18 months in for me!)

Allergic's great summary:

""A very simple guide for those who have been a bit overwhelmed by all the variety discussed on this thread. Experienced vapers either ignore, or check for errors please!

There can be a trade off to be considered around cost, variety, overall experience and hassle.

The cigalike ones are the simplest to deal with in that you just unscrew one cart & screw in another. These tend to be the type that you can buy at the local market or shopping centre for a comparatively cheap initial purchase, but the carts they use can be very expensive and tend to be limited in flavours/strengths depending on brand. They can be useful in that they are small, look the most like "real" cigs, and are the most hassle-free, but the experience really isn't as good as other methods and the cost is higher.

The next step is to have a battery and disposable tank type system (CE4 in my case) where you buy the different liquids and fill the tank yourself. The batteries last a few months to a year (about the same or a little longer than the cigalikes) and the tanks (clearomisers) last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months - this can be extended by cleaning, but the coils inside do eventually pack in. This method is much cheaper and gives a much more satisfying experience, but has the added faff of unscrewing and topping up the tank rather than just chucking the

You can then go further and use tanks that have replaceable wicks & coils, can be stripped down & "serviced" etc. There's also a lot of variety and complexity available in the overall set-up e.g. variable voltage batteries. All these add to the hassle factor but allow the overall experience to be much better fine tuned to suit the vaper. Cost is a moot point here - you will save money using serviceable tanks, but people that get really into this can spend a fair bit on shiney new toys!

When it comes to the "juice" or liquid there's a hell of a lot of different things to consider - nicotine strength, flavour, the balance of "throat hit" vs vapour etc. But basically there are 3 ways to get the right juice which are buy ready made from a big importer (limited options), buy made to order from a smaller supplier (needs to steep for a few days), or buy the makings & mix your own (hassle, mess & steeping). These have been ordered from minimum hassle/maximum price to maximum hassle/minimum cost.

I'm a naturally lazy person and comparatively new to vaping, so I have a battery & disposable tank system, and am currently buying imported juice (Hangsen pineapple and Smartjuice Red tobacco flavour) which I know has steeped plenty while being shipped over and both brands have very good quality control. I will probably go directly to mostly mixing my own once I get a bit more money at the end of the month to buy all the bits & base liquids, though will probably continue buying the Smartjuice tobacco flavour because I like it so much! I doubt I will go down the road of serviceable tanks unless I get a nice glass one eventually."

It's probably already charged shona - mine were.

SoleSource · 04/04/2014 15:38

Where can I buy authentic Hansen e liquids? They're supposed to be really good.

SoleSource · 04/04/2014 15:38

Hang sen

Allergictoironing · 04/04/2014 15:55

If you want large amounts, I can recommend Bargain Vapour. I bought 100ml of pineapple from them for 14 Euros + p&p Grin

SoleSource · 04/04/2014 16:53

Thank you Allergic I will buy the mint liquid.

RedFocus · 04/04/2014 17:42

My dh and I have been out today and bought ourselves a kit each. No idea what the tanks are or battery but he has got sherbet lemon flavour and I've got cherry cola. We have been sharing them because they are both so yummy. I haven't smoked since May 2012 using my own willpower but weekends are difficult as we like to share a bottle of wine and that's when the cravings start. We were using e-litres but thanks to this great thread we are now converted! Smile

SoleSource · 04/04/2014 17:58

Strong flavour, RedFocus?

Cantabile · 04/04/2014 19:00

Could anyone tell me about the battery chargers for 18650/18350? My friend has one which came with some massive piece of kit, and he says the charger is a cheap bit of crap and doesn't work very well as batteries don't fit too well etc.

I've looked at my e-pack, they have one but how do you tell the quality? I got my lovely spinner from there, (the SnoopDogg one!) and it's great, but otherwise I don't think I've had much from them.

Hi to new-to-the-thread vapers and new vapers. Lovely to see you and I hope you all have long and happy relationships with your vaping kits and juices!

Jazzy, I started with an ego C twist www.totallywicked-eliquid.co.uk/products/electronic-cigarette-starter-kits/torpedo-vvv/tornado-ego-c-twist-kit-3-product.html, and that was enough complication for me for quite a while. However, after a few months I ditched the (very) unsatisfactory cone/coil/mouthpiece system and now I only use the battery, with iClear 16s, GS-H2s and CE5s. It was like a new world had opened up to me Grin.

Frankly, when I first started vaping the Variable Voltage was wasted on me. I had absolutely no idea how why or what, as I had no idea how good vaping was or could be. Now, 6+ months on, I am considering getting something with variable wattage too, just out of curiosity, but I don't think I need it as I don't make my own coils (yet!). The VV is worth having now, though.

I actually have 4 batteries which I use regularly (2 with VV), and another two small ones which are there for emergencies.

Cantabile · 04/04/2014 19:06

On the political front.... Could new people sign the petition posted upthread by Plenty? The EU are going to restrict ecigs and ejuices in such a way that it will discourage people from switching from the fags, and make it hard for those of us who have to continue to enjoy it. Also please write to your MPs.

I was wondering whether changing the generic name from e-cig to something innocuous like vapestick would help too, but it's too late for that.

QueenStromba · 04/04/2014 19:08

I don't know about the chargers Cantabile since I've only just ordered a mod with separate batteries. Have him look at chargers on Fast Tech since they have reviews and are cheap if they turn out to be duds.

QueenStromba · 04/04/2014 19:12

DP and I almost had an argument about that the other day Cantabile. I said please can you sign it and he interpreted it as "you must sign it or else".

MaggieMcGill · 04/04/2014 19:26

Hi Jazzy, another thing to keep in mind is you will need at least two of everything. Two batteries a few different clearos for different flavours and of course a few different liquids. Personally I wouldn't spend all my money on the best kit until I was sure I was going to like it and stick with it but I would recommend you get a couple of variable voltage batteries, the bigger the Mah the better as they last longer without needing charged. I use 1300 mah ego c twists and I'm pretty happy with them.

FracturedViewOfLife · 04/04/2014 19:28

I've signed.

My Joose Juice delivery arrived today. I really like the coconut and might steal DP's strawberry and cream.

I'm just waiting on a new drip tip now as I really, really hate the one that came with the Kanger Aerotank.

MaggieMcGill · 04/04/2014 19:38

Queen did your dripping thing arrive? Mine came today and I'm so glad that one was already made and ready to use. I don't think I was quite prepared for how thin the coil is and how tiny the holes are that you feed it through. It did come in a very pretty little box though Grin

QueenStromba · 04/04/2014 19:50

MVPs from myepack are really cheap though Maggie, especially once you take into account the fact that they come with iclear 30s which are worth about a tenner on their own.

Having a few clearos is important Jazzy. I don't really feel comfortable advising on which ones to get though because clearos are like marmite. I personally love the iclear 30 but a lot of people can't stand it due to the non-changable metal mouth piece. I also like the iclear 16 but the problem that it and the 30 have is that they get through liquid more quickly - the atomisers last a lot longer on them though which probably makes up for added expense in liquid (and I don't think it makes a massive difference in liquid consumption anyway).

If you like flavours such as cinnamon and lemon then it's a good idea to have a clearo with a glass tank such as a kanger pro tank. Whether you prefer a bottom coil or a top coil tank will depend on how frequently you vape and whether you like a mainly PG or VG liquid. Mostly VG liquids work best in a bottom coil clearo because it's a thicker e juice. Bottom coils are also better if you vape frequently and are the sort of person who'd remember to stand the ecig on it's end.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 04/04/2014 20:17

Yay, new faces! Smile

If you have stupid money to spend, the Provari is supposed to be the bollocks but I have no idea why Confused It doesn't seem very different from a vamo v5 to me, which is a fraction of the price.

If I was starting today and money was no object, I would get 2 MVPs and a selection of good quality clearomisers from My Epack. choose some top coils, some bottom coils and some dual coils - see what you like. Also, as Queen says, a glass tank is a good idea if you want spicy or citrus flavours. Allow plenty of budget for trying different liquids too. As well as different flavours, try different strengths and different PG/VG mixes. It can take a while to find what you like.

Bargain vapour is great for large quantities of Hangsen liquid, but start with 10ml bottles until you know what you like. I get a lot from Premier ecigs - they do a wide range of flavours, are very cheap and fast delivery. I wouldn't say Hangsen is the best liquid out there - there are all sorts of posh gourmet liquids, but Hangsen is very good, consistent and doesn't need steeping.

Shonajoy · 04/04/2014 20:21

My MVP arrived today, and can't get it to work. Have charged the battery all afternoon, assembled correctly, filled with vape fluid and lots of bubbling but no vapour! Any ideas? Gutted.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 04/04/2014 20:22

Queen, why didn't your DP want to sign?

Cantabile, if you coil your own you have less need of VV/VW. I coil to 1.8-2.0 ohms and rarely turn up the volts now, they give the same amount of vapour on a standard ego battery as if I was using a standard (2.4 ohm) coil with 3.9 or 4 volts through it. I'm so pleased o level physics finally has a use Grin

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 04/04/2014 20:24

Bubbling but no vapour suggests it's a problem with the clearo, Shona. What clearo did it come with? Do you have a different one you can try on it?

QueenStromba · 04/04/2014 20:26

My dripping atomiser and my t juice samples both came today. I've only tried tangerine dream so far and it tastes just like love heart sweets.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 04/04/2014 20:26

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 04/04/2014 20:33

test from my new tablet wot I don,t like.

QueenStromba · 04/04/2014 20:40

Shona - have you pressed the button five times to turn it on? If it's definitely turned on then click the P and U buttons at the same time to see if it registers the clearo - if it flashes up with non then you need to either use another clearo or tease up the centre pin - someone posted a video about how to do that further up the thread.

Plenty - DP didn't want to sign because he thought I was telling him to. He's also not massively pro vaping despite the fact that he hated me smoking and knows that I have form for starting smoking again after a long time off the fags and I reckon that due to vaping I'll never smoke again. I'm sure once he gives it a read he will sign though.

T juice Forest Affaire is also quite lovely - reminiscent of red refresher sweets.

Shonajoy · 04/04/2014 20:40

Came with metal clearo have tried with pink, then put metal on again and it's working!? OMG it's incredible!!! Had the spacer on upside down too which may have contributed! Thankyou for your advice x

Nest of Vapers- we continue to not BU to carry on vaping!!
Shonajoy · 04/04/2014 20:43

I'd bought the pink clearo because I liked the colour...
