This is now the fourth thread in six months - which must say something about vaping. Thread 3 & links back are here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1985116-AIBU-to-carry-on-evangalising-about-electronic-cigarettes-Part-3?pg=1

For all new vapers I will again copy Allergic's great summary of what all the terms mean - but don't hesitate to ask anything about vaping

We all started from scratch & know what how very confusing it can be.

No question is to daft to ask - it really can be a minefield but it is a route to no more cigarettes! (nearly 18 months in for me!)

Allergic's great summary:

""A very simple guide for those who have been a bit overwhelmed by all the variety discussed on this thread. Experienced vapers either ignore, or check for errors please!

There can be a trade off to be considered around cost, variety, overall experience and hassle.

The cigalike ones are the simplest to deal with in that you just unscrew one cart & screw in another. These tend to be the type that you can buy at the local market or shopping centre for a comparatively cheap initial purchase, but the carts they use can be very expensive and tend to be limited in flavours/strengths depending on brand. They can be useful in that they are small, look the most like "real" cigs, and are the most hassle-free, but the experience really isn't as good as other methods and the cost is higher.

The next step is to have a battery and disposable tank type system (CE4 in my case) where you buy the different liquids and fill the tank yourself. The batteries last a few months to a year (about the same or a little longer than the cigalikes) and the tanks (clearomisers) last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months - this can be extended by cleaning, but the coils inside do eventually pack in. This method is much cheaper and gives a much more satisfying experience, but has the added faff of unscrewing and topping up the tank rather than just chucking the

You can then go further and use tanks that have replaceable wicks & coils, can be stripped down & "serviced" etc. There's also a lot of variety and complexity available in the overall set-up e.g. variable voltage batteries. All these add to the hassle factor but allow the overall experience to be much better fine tuned to suit the vaper. Cost is a moot point here - you will save money using serviceable tanks, but people that get really into this can spend a fair bit on shiney new toys!

When it comes to the "juice" or liquid there's a hell of a lot of different things to consider - nicotine strength, flavour, the balance of "throat hit" vs vapour etc. But basically there are 3 ways to get the right juice which are buy ready made from a big importer (limited options), buy made to order from a smaller supplier (needs to steep for a few days), or buy the makings & mix your own (hassle, mess & steeping). These have been ordered from minimum hassle/maximum price to maximum hassle/minimum cost.

I'm a naturally lazy person and comparatively new to vaping, so I have a battery & disposable tank system, and am currently buying imported juice (Hangsen pineapple and Smartjuice Red tobacco flavour) which I know has steeped plenty while being shipped over and both brands have very good quality control. I will probably go directly to mostly mixing my own once I get a bit more money at the end of the month to buy all the bits & base liquids, though will probably continue buying the Smartjuice tobacco flavour because I like it so much! I doubt I will go down the road of serviceable tanks unless I get a nice glass one eventually."

Thanks Plenty :) I've just ordered a load of T juice samples.

SoleSource · 01/04/2014 11:02

Allergic, very true wrt weight loss tool. Yayyyy

SoleSource · 01/04/2014 11:28

TJuice is supposed to have a rich, strong flavour.

That site looks great.

Plenty of flavours to choose from Plenty Grin

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 01/04/2014 11:44

Sole, that video's great! I bookmarked the report they talk about a while back and find myself referring to it quite frequently.

I just listened to this interview with a leading researcher about nicotine's potential use as a smart drug. I think this is why the Allen Carr method failed so dismally for me - I could never quite believe that nicotine was doing nothing for me.

magimedi · 01/04/2014 12:02

Great video, Sole.

Since quitting cigarettes (18 months) I have lost about half a stone with no effort at all.

I am certainly exercising more but I also find I am eating less & wonder if this is because I can taste everything so much more that I don't go on eating for the taste.

I am also certain that I vape more often than I had a fag & guess that stops me nibbling.

I have also noticed I drink more water.

Allergic that's brilliant! Some smoking cessation services are at last waking up to the potential - Leicester are trialing the use of ecigs for quitting - they're not allowed to prescribe them or recommend a particular model but they're currently offering £30 vouchers for participating in the trial. Then just a couple of days ago there was a thread on UKVapers from a smoking cessation services manager in Hampshire, wanting to meet with vapers and learn more.

Ledare · 01/04/2014 14:10

The Vaping Vision liquids I ordered last night have turned up. Free postage. That's what I call good service!

SoleSource · 01/04/2014 14:55

Smokey bacon va pe? Ugh, noooo

Bogeyface · 01/04/2014 15:00

So.....got my kit

What do I need to know?! I have tried reading the thread but it is rather hard work!

SoleSource · 01/04/2014 15:31

My E-Cig in its holder that lovely magimed sent to me Grin . I love it :)

Allergictoironing · 01/04/2014 15:41

Hey Bogeyface. If you can say what the kit is, would help (sorry if you've already said elsewhere).

Basics are check the battery is charged first. Then you need to put liquid in the tank - how to do this is very dependant on the type of tank which is why we need to know to advise you! Then you'll be ready to screw the tank onto the battery & go Grin.

Things to remember is that vaping isn't exactly like smoking - you need to take much slower drags, more like drinking a thick milkshake through a straw rather than the short sharp inhalation used for a cigarette.

Bogeyface · 01/04/2014 15:47

It is an erm,...eGo mini kit. Tank is already full, I have a bottle of stuff for when it runs out and it is charged. I have used the disposables before but I used one yesterday afternoon and it gave me such a tight chest, it was horrible.

I seem to be getting similar symptoms today but not soo bad. Maybe I just need to get through it until I get used to it.

SoleSource · 01/04/2014 15:54

Hi Bogeyface

Welcome :)

Allergictoironing · 01/04/2014 15:54

Um need a tiny bit more, as there seems to be different Ego mini kits for sale with slightly different bits with them. In particular the tank type e.g. CE4, Vivi Nova, Evod .......

QueenStromba · 01/04/2014 16:09

If it's already got liquid in it then the only thing you need to know straight away is to hold down the button while inhaling.

Allergictoironing · 01/04/2014 16:12

Good point Queen - really not at my best today am I! Blush Confused

QueenStromba · 01/04/2014 18:06

My smoke rainbow order has already shipped :) I'm really looking forward to trying some T juice flavours - I've bought 15 samplers for the price of 3 or 4 flavourings so was able to go for some that I'm not sure I'll like. I've just ordered a dripping atomizer from Totally Wicked for less than £3 including drip tip so I can try them out. Watch this space for my nearly full 1ml rejects.

SoleSource · 01/04/2014 19:39

Blowing smoke rings Grin

magimedi · 01/04/2014 19:51

Sole I was so excited to be able to blow rings with my vaper - could never do it with a fag!

Satisfying, isn't it? (in a minor way Grin )

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 01/04/2014 19:55

Ooh that looks good value Queen. You'll be rolling your own coils then?

This morning I got the wick I ordered from Stealth Vape. I can't believe I have used an entire metre of wick already! Mind you, that is for 6 months (tomorrow!) and for DH and me. I ordered some Voodoo Wool because it gets very good reviews. I got some 2mm and some 0.5mm but I think something inbetween would have been ideal. I shall experiment at the weekend.

BTW, did you know TW gave a rather large amount of money to UKIP just before the TPD vote? Shame they mostly didn't bother to turn up to vote - I did think we'd at last found something they were good for.

Bogey, yay! Welcome to the thread, glad you found some kit. Have a read of just the OP, there's Allergic's very useful beginners' guide. You might find it less harsh with a VG based liquid. Have a look at Joose Juice - they do liquid up to 70% VG for not much money. What's the liquid that came with it? Does it say the strength on it and how are you finding it, cravings-wise?

Bogeyface · 01/04/2014 20:35

Are there any VG based ones that are not mix your own? I dont think I am quite there yet!

I am using 1.8mg and find it is fine at killing the cravings, although seeing my Dad tonight in one of his steroid induced psychotic episodes may also have something to do with it. He has COPD thanks to smoking. That will not be me :(

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 01/04/2014 21:06

Bogey Welcome, and I am sorry to hear about your Dad. :( I think Joose Juice, if you go to the Samplers bit, you can choose the VG/PG mix.

Thanks for the suggestions on e pipes for DP, however he has decided to make his own! Shock Confused Still wants another one (not a pipe) for his birthday though, so... What on earth should I get him?

QueenStromba · 01/04/2014 21:25

I linked to this thread earlier which has recommendations for suppliers of VG liquids. I can personally recommend liberty flights - quick delivery, good quality stuff and good customer service.

QueenStromba · 01/04/2014 21:46

I might use it as practice for coil making Plenty, I don't see myself using it for anything other than tasting though and it comes with two spare coils.
