To wish I was shorter?

I'm not even that tall (5'8") but I have several issues with my height:

  1. My feet poke out from under the duvet (I like it right up over my shoulders) and they get chilly.
  2. My husband is an inch shorter than me and it makes me feel less feminine.
  3. Trousers and maxi dresses flap around my ankles.
  4. Shorter skirts and dresses are a little bit obscene on me (I'm a secondary school teacher so I try not to flash my pants at work).
  5. I would weigh less if I were shorter.

At least you can shorten stuff. You can't make things longer.

Salbertina · 29/09/2012 14:53

Indeed!

cynner · 29/09/2012 15:44

Hmmm..true. Not sure how to resolve the issue, though. I did try to achieve height for my children by hunting and marrying the tallest men available. My dd still complains about my short gene, as she wishes to be taller than her 5'6..

diddl · 29/09/2012 15:48

Sometimes though-shortened stuff just looks well, shortened!

It throws the proportions out.

I also buy for example 7/8 trousers to wear as long trousers, capris to wear as 3/4 etc.

I wear skinny jeans, even though I probably shouldn´t as I can cut the necessary foot in length off the bottom & they still fit as they should on the leg.

LizLemon007 · 29/09/2012 16:24

epiphany, I had the same lecture but the other way round. over a decade ago now, my two flatmates 5'11 each of them, gave out to me for having a tall boyfriend. I just felt a bit passive about it,,,, i was going out with whoever asked me ykwim!! the bloke I reaalllllly wantedto go out with was 5'9. he dumped me with a character assassination. ah well. onwards and upwards. Now again, I'm with a tall man. I don't know why this happens. I ahve never ruled out smaller men.

SoupDragon · 29/09/2012 16:29

It may sometimes look shortened but theres nothing at all you can do to lengthen any clothing.

Coprolite · 29/09/2012 16:34

I am only 5 ft but I appear to have arms that belong to the Missing Link.
Petite clothes sleeves end up as three quarters sleeves.

You taller people should remember your advantage when it comes to winning swimming races (less distance to cover) and reaching a high hold when rock climbing Wink

SamuelWestsMistress · 29/09/2012 16:39

Out of all of my cousins and siblings from both sides of the family I am actually the shortest (15 altogether) and I'm 5'9!!

The heights of some of the kids in primary 7 and 1st year academy (11/12) is terrifying as they are all so tall! I think my height is sooner or later going to be average to short.

SamuelWestsMistress · 29/09/2012 16:40

Oh and I don't have long legs. My height comes from my freakishly long back. I am a human sausage dog. Sexy huh?

Coprolite · 29/09/2012 16:41

When I'vebeen on the Underground in the past and itsbeen busy I have had to hold on to my (tall) husbands torso - I can't reach the straps at the ceiling.
I suppose he could lift me up,but then I'd just dangle about Blush

MadBusLady · 29/09/2012 16:48

I have had short people fall against me on the underground before when we go round a corner. They are so apologetic, they literally have no choice at all! It is a very odd design IMO. Why don't the newer carriages have lower straps?

Ephiny · 29/09/2012 16:52

I can't reach the straps/rails on the Tube either, however on the positive side, I've developed an excellent sense of balance since I started commuting :)

diddl · 29/09/2012 16:52

I also can´t reach straps!

Flew with Easyjet recently-took carry on luggage.

Says you should be able to stow it yourself.

Ha di fucking ha!!!

Can lift my luggage up-but can´t reach!!

Is that discrimination on their part??!!

Coprolite · 29/09/2012 17:02

MadBusLady that was probably me.....

I'm sorry.Really really sorry.Look, I can't tell you how sorry I am....Grin

MadBusLady · 29/09/2012 17:11

I actually wouldn't mind if you just hung on to me (after asking obviously!) Seems much more sensible than a constant game of dominos. Maybe there could be a tube buddy scheme Grin

Coprolite · 29/09/2012 17:29

I'd probably be buddied up with the man who's wet himself and smells of Special Brew though.....

What a kind offer MBL - I shall ask in future and hope I get a kindly person like you.By the same token,if you drop something,I'm your girl for finding it in amongst all those feet!!!!

dondon33 · 29/09/2012 20:52

I'm 5'10 and a bit, and I like being tall. It's my legs that piss me off at 34" but it's getting better all the time in the high street shops now and there's many online shops for long legged ladies.
Oddly though I have relatively small feet for my height... I'm a 5 or 6 depending on the shoe.
I've been this height from around 14/15 years old and used to wish I was shorter as I stood out like a sore thumb compared to my shorter friends at that age :) I also could never find a taller boyfriend, the tallest was a few inches shorter than me.
I've got one now though he's 6'3 :) and at first it was weird looking up into his eyes instead of down :)
Two of my DC take after me for height, the eldest(17) towers above me and the second (15) is my height now.

jjuice · 29/09/2012 21:33

My DD is 6'1 at 15yo and loves it...we found longtallsally and tallgirls too old for her but recently found www.tallandall.com and the prices are reasonable and the leg length goes to 40"!!!!

TheAccidentalExhibitionist · 01/10/2012 16:16

Another 6 footer here Grin

I love being tall and as I have rather a dominant personality, it seems to suit.

Strangely enough I'm intimidated by women taller than me, so I often wonder whether tall women are frequently intimidating to smaller women.

Can any small Mnetters out there answer that? Wink

CrunchyFrog · 01/10/2012 16:25

I'm only 5'7 but I'm the tallest woman in my family and friends group. They are all weeny creatures.

I do feel like I loom a bit.
