To wish I was shorter?

I'm not even that tall (5'8") but I have several issues with my height:

  1. My feet poke out from under the duvet (I like it right up over my shoulders) and they get chilly.
  2. My husband is an inch shorter than me and it makes me feel less feminine.
  3. Trousers and maxi dresses flap around my ankles.
  4. Shorter skirts and dresses are a little bit obscene on me (I'm a secondary school teacher so I try not to flash my pants at work).
  5. I would weigh less if I were shorter.

I am 5'4'' and I hate tiny duvets so mine came from The Big Bed Co - expensive but sooo worth it!!

I'd love to be a bit taller!

But I'd also love to be thinner, have straight hair and bigger boobs!

tallwivglasses · 28/09/2012 23:30

What about my theory?

There's many here taller than me but I think I'd have been very short of shags boyfriends if I'd limited my choice to boys/men taller than me. There were not many boys taller and plenty of lovely ones smaller...none of them had a problem with it so why should I? (and of course, the really tall blokes were dating the 5-footers)

BUT those odd occasions I still remember, being skated around the ice rink by a big strong guy, or thrown about the dancefloor like I was some petite thing from the 50's by a gorgeous gangly French giant...sigh, those are the memories I'll take with me into the old people's home Wink

Mayisout · 28/09/2012 23:53

I have a DD with red hair - 5ft 5, I also have a dd with blonde hair, quite long and she is 5ft 8 1/2, And I am amazed at how much she gets ogled by blokes. Just all the time. Wherever we are.

So dye your hair blonde and enjoy the attention.

numptymark1 · 29/09/2012 00:02

I'm 6ft

it got me beaten up when I was 15 as one of the mean girls aka thug though she would show off in front of her friends by taking down the big one -with a rounders bat!

so i do feel vulnerable at night etc

clothes are a PITA

shoes more so -size 10 but if I was a 5 I would fall over

advantages to being tall
-in a crowd you can gererally see
-if the person beind you is kicking your seat etc, just sit up straight -they can't see anything but you aren't doing anything wrong -karma is a bitch

and that's about it

oh I wish I was a shorty like my mum (5ft 7)

tallwivglasses · 29/09/2012 00:06

I have a friend who keeps her blonde hair short because she felt she wasn't taken seriously with flowing locks. That's a whole other thread though.

As Is...how alarming it is suddenly being aware that nasty ogly men are very obviously drooling over one's DD, even though mother lion is in the vicinity. Now there's an advantage of being tall Wink

MadBusLady · 29/09/2012 00:20

I keep my hair long partly because having a lot of hair makes the rest of me look shorter/smaller by contrast.

I long to do elfin but never will.

tallwivglasses · 29/09/2012 00:42

Oh elfin

QueenMaeve · 29/09/2012 00:44

Yabu, I am 5"8 too and I love being tall. Clothes look much better and you carry weight better when your tall.

Jenstar21 · 29/09/2012 01:00

I don't think 5'8" is really tall. I'm 5'9" and wish I was a couple inches taller! My DP is 6'7", and I feel tiny next to him! I wear a 34" inside leg , and they're not that difficult to find. Also, ikea super kingsize beds and bedding are your friends. :)

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 29/09/2012 02:43

I am 6 foot and have been since early teens - it has been the one physical feature I have always really liked.

I wear heels - I am tall anyway, might as well be reaaly tall!

I can't think of any downsides. Other than work napoleons getting uppity. There is something about a tall woman which a certain type of man really dislikes.

cynner · 29/09/2012 03:11

My jealousy knows no bounds. When you are 4'11...everyone looks down your shirt, you have a 24' inseam, you resemble an M&M when pregnant, your feet dangle from chairs, your 12yr old towers above you, your taller work colleagues speak over your head, and sex with big blokes can be painful and humorous..

LST · 29/09/2012 07:21

I wish I was 5"8 Sad I thought I was 6"ft but I had a medical check 3 weeks ago and I'm actually nearly 6"2!

I've heard short men complaining about tall men daring to date small women, when apparently they should be altruistically leaving them for the small men Hmm.

I don't get why it's a big deal really. I'd have no problem dating a man shorter than me, it just hasn't happened as there aren't many men shorter than me!

quoteunquote · 29/09/2012 08:30

I'll second long tall sally being a rip off, the clothes fall to bits before you get them out of the bag,

as for 5'8" being tall, Grin

I love being tall,

which is good as my children make me look small, as DH is just under 7 foot,

I have a 36" inside leg, so much fun trying to find jeans.

quoteunquote · 29/09/2012 08:32

oh and the trick to a good night sleep is a king size duvet each once tried you will never go back, and at least a kingsize bed.

Salbertina · 29/09/2012 08:39

Quality great at long tall Sally?!! Sceptical emoticon...
Also seem yo cater only for the extremely
tall- am 5ft 9.5 cannot get enough length on high street but am SWAMPED in their stuff yet there must be many more people my height than over 6ft. Don't they realise?? Not saying shouldn't cater for both but should cater for more standardly tall also

Jamdoughnutfiend · 29/09/2012 08:42

Late to the party but YABU as 5'8 isn't tall Grin
I am 6'1 and spent my teenage years wishing I was 5'1 - now I am happy with my height, as shopping is much easier except for shoes- i wear a 10 and shoe shopping is miserable. My DDs are both going to be 6 footers, so I am always going to tell them being tall is wonderful.

Another shortarse here - 4'11''.

I don't mind being short, but I have put on a lot of weight since having ds, and am in danger of turning into one of those mother hen shaped women.

The most mortifying thing that happened to me was falling into a supermarket freezer, trying to reach a tub of icecream right at the back, I was stuck there with my legs sticking out of the freezer until someone could get me out.Blush

Proudnscary · 29/09/2012 08:56

My dh likes me being a short arse, as he's only 5'8" but towers over me even when I'm in heels.

Weirdly all my female best friends are tall - two are 5'11, one 5'10, the others 5'7 ish, the guys are all over 6ft - and have been known to rest their drinks on my head Hmm

Proudnscary · 29/09/2012 08:57

hazey that's hilarious, sorry! I don't mind being (nearly) 5'2 on the whole but I can never reach top shelves etc and have to ask for help in manner of small child.

cynner · 29/09/2012 14:19

feels faint Quotes legs are nearly a foot longer than mine! You tall women are so very lucky, with your long long legs..

Salbertina · 29/09/2012 14:26

Lucky to never ever be able to shop from high street?? Seen any tall ranges (bar a couple) to rival the many petite ones???
Limited to flat shoes in huge sizes?? Feel like a tranny sometimes!!!

Limited to much smaller range of men- sorry I at least feel unfeminine w shorter men

cynner · 29/09/2012 14:43

Ahhhh..Salvertina, I have the same issue. Unless, I am willing to buy Capri length trousers, everything I buy must be altered. Sleeves on blouses must be shortened. Many of the fashions I would love to wear, would look ridiculous on my less than 5' body. Just once in my life, I would like to be described as willowy, or lanky..
