To wish I was shorter?

Ecgwynn · 28/09/2012 07:46

I'm not even that tall (5'8") but I have several issues with my height:

  1. My feet poke out from under the duvet (I like it right up over my shoulders) and they get chilly.
  2. My husband is an inch shorter than me and it makes me feel less feminine.
  3. Trousers and maxi dresses flap around my ankles.
  4. Shorter skirts and dresses are a little bit obscene on me (I'm a secondary school teacher so I try not to flash my pants at work).
  5. I would weigh less if I were shorter.

Just logged in to say get a king (or superking) sized duvet. Also helps lessen the effect of DH stealing it in the night.
But I've been beaten by 13YearsOn ....

5'8" isn't going to be that tall soon. I used to feel tall, and now am distinctly average at 5'7"

Whatdoiknowanyway · 28/09/2012 08:45

My youngest daughter is 5'8" and is disgruntled about it as she always expected to be taller than me (5'10") and was looking forward to it. Her sister is 5'11".
I was unusually tall growing up but increasingly find that I'm smaller than many of the younger generation.

I'm proud of my daughters' attitude to their height and am saddened by fellow mothers who openly fret that their 5'6" teenage daughters are going to be 'too tall'. We all wear heels and I frequently look several inches taller than my husband - who is quite happy about it all.

Ecgwynn · 28/09/2012 09:13

I have a superking, maybe I need to kick DH over a bit.
I know I'm not particularly tall, it just annoys me!
The weight thing isn't helped by the fact I'm quite wide hipped. Currently just under 14 stone and size 16/18 and feel huge!
My family are all big, the men being at least 6 foot so there's no pressure from mum etc.

Im 4ft 10 maybe 9 as i I think im on the shrink Confused try having people talking to you as if you are a small child or a pet, aww arn't you cute can't believe how small you are , FUCK OFF Angry. nothing fits properly some clothes swamp you and I have size 2 feet , MY children were taller than me by the time they went to high school I would love to be a few inches taller I have mobility problems so I can't wear heels so im stuck all the way down here with the 9 yr olds Grin

Empusa · 28/09/2012 09:19

I'm 4ft 10

All trousers need to be taken up
I can never reach what I need in supermarkets
If there's something going on and there's a crowd, I can never see
Children tower over me
I can't use half the storage space in my flat as it's too high up
If I was taller I could wear clothing in a smaller size while still being the same weight

Empusa · 28/09/2012 09:20

MrsJay Dear god, are you me?? I also have size 2 feet and mobility problems (I miss my high heels )

THETrills · 28/09/2012 09:21

Your last point is a stupid one.

If you were shorter you would have to eat less to maintain a similar BMI or similar waist size. (a smaller body needs less fuel to keep it going)

Otherwise YANBU, I sometimes try dresses and think "this would be a really nice length if I was 5'4 (I'm only 5'7 so maybe I am just yearning for frumpy lengths?)

ethelb · 28/09/2012 09:24

I'm 5'2'' and though my DP quite likes it if you are taller you have never experienced

  1. people choosing to barge YOU on public transport and then the do the 'oh no I didn't see you there' face
  2. people expecting you to "see the funny side" of your height
  3. your inlaws long, long, long discussions about small person syndrome, looking at you and sniggering,
  4. looking at your recommended calorie intake and getting 1600 calories Shock
Mrsjay · 28/09/2012 09:25

MrsJay Dear god, are you me?? I also have size 2 feet and mobility problems (I miss my high heels )

Oh maybe seperated at birth ive never been able to do heels I have humfy comfortable shoes

Startailoforangeandgold · 28/09/2012 09:27

Please can I have 2"

DD1(14) is 5'6", I'm 5'4"

It pisses me off!

Mrsjay · 28/09/2012 09:27

Oh an another thing OP bet you can reach the 3rd shelf in the supermarket ,

ethelb · 28/09/2012 09:28

oh yeah,

  1. tall people coming to sit infront of you just as the film/play/concert is about to start despite you spending 10 mins finding somewhere you could see from
  2. people coming to your house and laughing at your step ladder which you use to get the plates down Blush
  3. supermarkets are tough, but I really don't get the branches of Topshop that seem to have the racks up so high they are on the ceiling! It's a women's department
  4. being unable to adjust the seat properly in your test as it doesn't go any lower
  5. seat belts cutting into your neck
  6. generally being a bit shit at most sports
Natnat29 · 28/09/2012 09:30

I used to want to be shorter when I was in my teens, but I love it now. I'm 5.11 and yes it does get commented on quite often but normally complimentary. My oh is 6.4 and we are expecting a girl, I hope she will be proud to be tall just like her mum, and all the females on my side :)

TheDogDidIt · 28/09/2012 09:34

5'1" here.

Clothes never fit me, as most things are designed for taller people so it's all baggy round the waist and tight on the hips. They can be altered (although not by me!) but you can't tell what they're going to look like by trying them on. Petite ranges seem to be designed for people who are either straight-up-and-down or aged 60+.

There's a full foot difference in height between me and my DP, meaning that I can't snog him or anything else while standing up.

Look ridiculous standing next to people in photographs.

Need to keep roots touched up at all times, as that's all that most people see of me. Wink Thank God I don't have dandruff.

As per my lamentations on another thread, I put weight on if I eat more than a tiny amount - wayy below my actual appetite.

And if I do put weight on, you can see every pound.

Endless comments about being cute. Getting patronised by my own 12-yr-old who now towers over me.

Knowing I'm going to be EVEN SHORTER when I get old.

Going to gigs/shows is bloody awful because I can't see a thing.

Constantly pushed and shoved in crowds because people making their way from one place to another don't see me and assume I'm a space in the crowd. The area surrounding me always turns into a thoroughfare.

In fact, my abiding impression of any crowded place is ARMPITS.

That was cathartic Grin.

TheDogDidIt · 28/09/2012 09:35

Oh, and if I have something cooking in a big saucepan on the hob, I have to stand on a fucking chair to stir it, if I actually want to see into the pan. Kitchen surfaces and cupboards are all designed for taller people so I'm constantly dragging chairs and stools to stand on. Not a good look.

LizLemon007 · 28/09/2012 09:35

ethelb, yeah that is one thing that annoys me 'small person syndrome'. I'm far more laid back and easy going than is average I'd say. In fact my problem is usually lack of motivation and focus, but that's another thread!! My brother who is only about 5'7" would be written off by most women I'd guess, even though he's solvent, decent, intelligent etc..... he never complains about his height, EVER, he drives a golf but could afford a 'small man syndrome car if he wanted one'. The whole small man syndrome thing upsets me on BEHALF of small men, even the ones I'm not related to and have never met!!

ethelb · 28/09/2012 09:37

"Constantly pushed and shoved in crowds because people making their way from one place to another don't see me and assume I'm a space in the crowd. The area surrounding me always turns into a thoroughfare."

YES! Grin Often taller friends ask why I don't move as I am obviously in the way. So I move. And the chaos moves with me!

LizLemon007 · 28/09/2012 09:37

I am NOT shit at sport though! i'm as fit as a navy seal.

MadBusLady · 28/09/2012 09:37

I can personally testify that being shit at sport has nothing to do with height. Grin

TheDogDidIt · 28/09/2012 09:37

And you wind the car seat right up to the max, then sit on a cushion, and people still laugh because "it looks like there's nobody driving the car!".

Mrsjay · 28/09/2012 09:38

Look ridiculous standing next to people in photographs.

I try to avoid being photographed or look for a step I was at a wedding recently they did a group photie i was on a step but a man stood right in front of me you can see the side of my face Shock

ethelb · 28/09/2012 09:38

I'm fit. But I had to be a cox rather than a rower, I am quite a good long distance runner but my times are never going to be that good. What sports are you good at? Maybe I can try them?

Ephiny · 28/09/2012 09:39

I think 5'8" is the height of the average man, isn't it? That means that everything in public spaces from supermarket shelves to office furniture is designed for people your height. It must be very convenient!

No one pushes me aside or intimidates me though. That's more about personality and confidence than physical size, I think.

Mrsjay · 28/09/2012 09:41

Im rubbish at sport but that is cos im lazy

LizLemon007 · 28/09/2012 09:41

ps, if I see a woman with a man an inch shorter than her, I think only good things, like that their relationship based on a real friendship/connection. They are not barbie and ken. They are confident enough in themselves to not care about the 'convention' that the man should be taller than the woman.
