To wish I was shorter?

I'm not even that tall (5'8") but I have several issues with my height:

  1. My feet poke out from under the duvet (I like it right up over my shoulders) and they get chilly.
  2. My husband is an inch shorter than me and it makes me feel less feminine.
  3. Trousers and maxi dresses flap around my ankles.
  4. Shorter skirts and dresses are a little bit obscene on me (I'm a secondary school teacher so I try not to flash my pants at work).
  5. I would weigh less if I were shorter.

Would love my own tailor tbh!

LizLemon007 · 28/09/2012 12:43

I have sent back dresses for being too short!!! (i'm 5'2") I can't help thinking 'what claaaass of a woman would wear that ?" Wink judgypants

naturalbaby · 28/09/2012 12:50

YABU - I am 6foot tall.
My DH is more than an inch shorter than me.
I sleep diagonally across the bed to get the duvet over my shoulders+warm feet.
I would weigh less but because I am so tall I look slimmer than I actually am.

The shorter girls I play sport with complain I have an unfair advantage because my legs are so long, but I have more weight to carry and can't move as fast as them.

MrsRobertDuvallHasRosacea · 28/09/2012 13:00

Dd 16 is nearly 6 feet tall and carries it beautifully.
Endless legs, and size 12.

She has so much confidence which I never had at her age.
And lots of very small friends.

AgathaFusty · 28/09/2012 13:42

MrsRobert that's lovely. I love to see tall young women who feel confident about their height.

LizLemon007 · 28/09/2012 14:42

It's the small kids I feel sorry for. They know that height is valued, revered, desired. Small kids have it rough.

LittleAbruzzenBear · 28/09/2012 15:56

LizLemon007 couldn't agree more with your last comment. Short kids get seen as an easy target, get pushed around.... And as an adult people make very rude comments. I must admit I bite my tongue, but wonder how things would go if I retorted "Yes, well you're fat/ugly/spotty etc". One of my BFs is 6' 4" and he gets rude comments about his height. He says its always the average height folks that are rude to short and tall people.

StrawberrytallCAKE · 28/09/2012 16:06

Ah issi have you seen the film 'what to expect'? I like to think of myself as a magical pregnancy unicorn in my heels. The likelihood is I may have sprained my ankle by Sunday.

SPsFanjoHarboursDeadCatsAgain · 28/09/2012 16:11

I'm 4 feet 10!

I am tiny with size 3 feet.

I can sleep in the toddler bed with my toddler easily.

My double bed will easily fit for of me in it at once.

I'm a size 3 in foot and can wear children's clothes.

I get id'd all the time. Even on one occasion calpol!!

If I wear heels I'm the same size or maybe bit smaller then friends.

I would love to be taller!

TheSmallPrint · 28/09/2012 16:13

Really? Being tall is fabulous! I know what you mean about having a shorter husband though which is why I married someone 6'5" so I could wear heels and still feel 'feminine'.

FatherHankTree · 28/09/2012 16:34

Fanjo, I'm a similar height to you and even average height would be lovely. At least there's the advantage of being able to wear kids' clothes, although one of my dog-walking coats has a name and class label.

Chandon · 28/09/2012 17:17

I would really like to challenge the idea that a woman is not "feminine" , whatever the f&ck that means, if she is taller than her partner.

How sad is that? How conditioned your thinking. Imagine writing off anyone who is shorter than you, because reading shite novel;s and watching dumb TV has "taught" you that men need to be, what, tall dark and handsome? And women petite and diminuitive ( sp?) and "feminine". Yawn.

It shows you are an ultimate sheeple and do not have the strength of personality to stand out (literally, ha!) from the crowd even a tiny bit.

....or as my 1 ft shorter BF of long ago once said: "We're all the same height when we are lying down"Wink

ThingsThatMakeYouGoHmmm · 28/09/2012 17:30

Try being 6ft 3 Hmm

With a 36in inside leg Hmm Hmm

Uppermid · 28/09/2012 17:33

Being small ain't all it's cracked up to be

MadBusLady · 28/09/2012 17:33

Well done for "challenging the idea" by insulting and making unpleasant assumptions about the people who are expressing empathy with it, Chandon. I'm sure your challenging strategy will be highly successful.

SoupDragon · 28/09/2012 17:35

I"d rather be "conditioned in my thinking" and a "sheeple" than rude and insulting.

AgathaFusty · 28/09/2012 17:52

Some people are bothered by being tall, some are not Chandon. Maybe their own personal life experiences have something to do with it. For me personally, I was always embarassed by my feet being larger than the other girls in my class. I remember once our teacher (in primary school) was showing us bar charts, and we all had to write down our shoe size for the chart - my feet were the biggest in the class, bigger than the boys feet. It was the first time I can recall being really, really uncomfortable about my height and my feet. I remember crying whenever I had to get new shoes as I knew they would be a size bigger again. My feet aren't that big now, but when I was a child in the 70's, they were much bigger than normal, and that conditioned my thinking for a long time.

kiwigirl42 · 28/09/2012 17:55

Chandon this is the best thing, you can intimidate annoying men just by standing next to them and looking down!

I'm 6"2 and this is one perk which is worth every inch! I LOVE doing it, especially to sanctamonious little twats! Make 'em squirm!

Empusa · 28/09/2012 18:00

DH is short and has had women in the past turn him down for being too short for them to date! Shock

Their loss though!

BadgersRetreat · 28/09/2012 18:06

i mostly like being quite tall (5'8" - am 6 ft in my wedges - love that) but being the tallest amongst a group of other people, most of whom are men, is enough to make anyone feel a bit butch.

AgathaFusty · 28/09/2012 18:21

Badgers I agree with that, especially since there is usually one small guy in any group who feels the need to comment

wonkylegs · 28/09/2012 18:26

A 4'11" shortie here (and off heels at the moment thanks to crutches Sad)
The main thing I envy about people with height is the lack of being in peoples armpits .... Crowds are no fun when short, metro trains, clubs, concerts are ram packed with sweaty armpits always at my face level and this joy was usually added to by being trampled, bumped & crushed

BadgersRetreat · 28/09/2012 18:29

i have a friend who is 4'8'' and once caught her climbing the shelves at the supermarket to get to what she needed

she was v heavily pg at the time too...can't be fun

WhatWouldVegansDo · 28/09/2012 18:32

OP, we could always chop your feet off. Or your head. Would that help?

Chigley1 · 28/09/2012 18:41

I'd love to be a bit taller, 5ft here! I'm also small (size 6-8) and despite being almost 40 with 2 kids and my own business I am frequently treated like a small child/girl/pet and sometimes struggle to be taken seriously Angry I have blonde hair too which makes it worse

Embrace the tallness!!!!
