To wish I was shorter?

I'm not even that tall (5'8") but I have several issues with my height:

  1. My feet poke out from under the duvet (I like it right up over my shoulders) and they get chilly.
  2. My husband is an inch shorter than me and it makes me feel less feminine.
  3. Trousers and maxi dresses flap around my ankles.
  4. Shorter skirts and dresses are a little bit obscene on me (I'm a secondary school teacher so I try not to flash my pants at work).
  5. I would weigh less if I were shorter.

"Empusa,I like people treating me a bit like a doll!
They are looking after me,its nice."

Grin

Unfortunately it winds me up no end! I'm not exactly a dainty, soft personality who likes to feel looked after

YABU! am 5'8" and I think it's the ideal height Grin. I do really like the height I am.

Get a duvet a size bigger than your bed - problem solved

Never wear maxi dresses - just accept that they won't suit you

Buy trousers carefully and don't buy ones which are too short. Just don't buy them. There are trousers out there which fit fine.

Skirts and dresses - just make sure the hemline looks right on you. There are all sorts of length skirts and the ideal one for you is out there!

You would weigh less if you were shorter - that's nuts - you can be slim or fat at any height

Re husband's height - most people probably won't even notice an inch. And it's hardly a Tom Cruise / Nicola Kidmanesque issue.

Accept the things you can't change, and change the things you can't accept Grin.

tallwivglasses · 28/09/2012 11:41

Ikea beds are longer - bliss. But you have to buy their sheets.

just me on the tall man short woman theory then Blush

SoupDragon · 28/09/2012 11:43

I have an Ikea bed and use normal sheets which fit perfectly.

tallwivglasses · 28/09/2012 11:58

Really? Damnit I'm gullible!

MrSunshine · 28/09/2012 11:59

Whats wrong with being taller than the man next to you? Confused

whiteandyelloworchid · 28/09/2012 12:05

i'm 5 ft 4 which i think is a nice height although if i was a couple of inches taller i'd look slimmer, i do like wearing heels as its makes feel feel taller and more of an air of not to messed with lol
but its annoying not being able to reach the top shelf int he kitchen cuboards etc

SoupDragon · 28/09/2012 12:08

I think in the past Ikea beds weren't standard UK sizes but they changed them all.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 28/09/2012 12:09

I am 5' 8" and 3" taller than dh - it doesn't worry me particularly - though I tend not to wear heels when out with him. I do get annoyed with too short dresses and tops but just wear leggings with them to compensate. I have some very long maxi dresses and skirts so don't have a problem there. I do have an issue with wide legged trousers they are often flapping around my ankles - but if you shop at places that do different leg lengths it is alright.

So on balance yabu - you should learn to love your height and use it to your advantage Smile

Narked · 28/09/2012 12:14

YABU. You need to change your duvet, where you shop and your DH

TheDogDidIt · 28/09/2012 12:15

I had a boyfriend once who was the same height as me, so both 5'1". If I'd thought the "aww, cute " remarks were bad when I was on my own... Confused

(We didn't split up because of that, though. We split up because he was a wanker.)

Narked · 28/09/2012 12:16

You need to love your height. There's nothing bad about towering over men.

LizLemon007 · 28/09/2012 12:16

I dont' feel dainty. I may be short but I tend to feel a bit stocky (like a pp, if I put on a pound, no a gram !)

TheDogDidIt · 28/09/2012 12:16

Although snogging without getting a sore neck made a nice change.

LizLemon007 · 28/09/2012 12:18

Yes, I would like to be taller than some men. Especially if they were wankers. I'm taller than than no male over the age of 11 or 12¬

AgathaFusty · 28/09/2012 12:22

Being tall doesn't bother me any more, although it used to when I was younger. Women generally seem taller now though. When I was at school, I was always the tallest girl in the year. Makes me wonder where all the women who are my age and tall now, were hiding when I was a teenager Grin

I do get the weight thing though. When a group of women get together and all start talking about their weight being 8 st or 9 st, that can make me feel a bit big, rather than just tall. I never tell people how much I weigh for that reason, even though I weigh an appropriate amount for my height.

SarryB · 28/09/2012 12:26

I'm 5'1''.

Recently bought two pairs of SHORT leg trousers. Still had to take them up by 4 inches. Grr.

Cannot reach anything in our kitchen that is on the second shelf. Never mind the very top shelf!

Regular sized clothes tend to 'hit' me in the wrong place, like if they have an obvious waist, it's way too low on me.

I can't put my LO into a travel cot, without dropping him the last 3 inches.

elegangle · 28/09/2012 12:26

It's alright tallwivglasses I doubt you've outed yourself, I'm also tall (6ft2) with glasses and use that exact phrase to describe myself. I also use elegant but gangly hence my nn so am probably more outable!
As for tall fashion, try tallgirls, they're cheapy then long tall sally and less frumpy.
No, I don't always like being this talll but there is nothing I can do about it (apart from learning to be good at ducking through some doorways). I was bullyed horrendously at school because of it but now that I am much older and have moved away I have put that behind me and now really enjoy the reactions I get when wearing heels. I've had the odd comment along the lines of 'did you used to be a man' by a bunch of pissed up youths before but usually only get positive vibes. My dh is shorter than me but once again, there is nothing we can do to change that!
It won't be long before my 2 boys start to tower over me and then I'll be the one to have to crane my neck upwards.

LizLemon007 · 28/09/2012 12:28

What make were they SarryB?

I must have a really short body. It's dresses that I find hard. Often trousers for a normal heighted person (whatever that is perceived to be in the rag trade) will only be a tiny bit too long so I can wear them. I think i'm not in proportion though. I'm not overweight but I have NO waist, even when I have a flat tummy. I would like a bit of height in my tummy area.

LizLemon007 · 28/09/2012 12:28

ps, and in ALL seriousness, I think that is why I only got to 37 weeks with all my pregnancies. Body just couldn't contain the baby any longer.

LizLemon007 · 28/09/2012 12:30

Any range aimed at a woman's height not her age/lifestyle is bound to be a bit bland. I find the precis petite and minuet ranges VERY unappealing.

LizLemon007 · 28/09/2012 12:31

lol at the travel cot. I remember that! I used to nearly fall in on top to avoid dropping the baby the last few inches!!

Ephiny · 28/09/2012 12:36

Yes to the 'waist' being in the wrong place on dresses, jackets etc. Though the worst thing is v-neck or scoop-neck tops that are always so low cut you can't bend over without flashing your boobs Hmm

And don't get me started on jeans that come up to my ribs...

Leg length is the least of my problems!

MadBusLady · 28/09/2012 12:39

Last year the waist was in the wrong place for me on nearly every dress on the High St and I'm 5'8. They were all right under my boobs and rest of the dress fluttered down to about mid-thigh and made me look like Baby Jane. They must be in the right place for somebody Confused
