To wish I was shorter?

Ecgwynn · 28/09/2012 07:46

I'm not even that tall (5'8") but I have several issues with my height:

  1. My feet poke out from under the duvet (I like it right up over my shoulders) and they get chilly.
  2. My husband is an inch shorter than me and it makes me feel less feminine.
  3. Trousers and maxi dresses flap around my ankles.
  4. Shorter skirts and dresses are a little bit obscene on me (I'm a secondary school teacher so I try not to flash my pants at work).
  5. I would weigh less if I were shorter.

ephiny oh its all my fault then...

but seriously, I am very assertive and call people up (shout at them) when they are being shovey in a crowded place. They still zone in on me as a "space" though.

defineme · 28/09/2012 09:42

Sorry, but you're not tall! You maybe a little taller than average, but no way are you proper tall. I have no problem with duvets and I'm a lot taller. Maxi dresses are fine-I do tend to buy from places with a longer length option-eg I have next and boden ones in the long option, but I also have a primark one that's fine-my inside leg is about 33'.Feminine is what yhou make it-supermodels seem pretty feminine to me and they're a lot taller than you.
The one thing I miss is an enveloping cuddle-only my dbro can give me a proper big hug as he's way over 6 foot.

Mrsjay · 28/09/2012 09:42

I was once referred to as a being like a 'terrier' I was being assertive not nippy sigh

LizLemon007 · 28/09/2012 09:44

no, I get that a bit too,,,,, sometimes you approach the top of the queue, almost simultaneously but not quiiiiite, you know that in this instance you are a hair's breath ahead. If it's somebody your own height they'll subconsciously or consciously acknowledge that you're ahead, but I find that OFTEN (not always) a tall person will just take that one last large stride to the top of the queue. I'd say if you said, excuse me? they'd be shocked. I don't think tall people realise sometimes that they treat small adults like children. (sometimes, again, not trying to start ww III)

LizLemon007 · 28/09/2012 09:45

a terrier! geez! a tall man is assertive, a tall woman would be a bitch and a small woman a terrier. Assertiveness is allowed more from some quarters than from others!

RobinSparkles · 28/09/2012 09:49

I'm 5'3 but I don't actually feel small. I always see myself as average even though, in reality, I know I'm short.

I don't mind it really, most of my friends seem to be around my height. Sure, there are times when I feel a bit like a hobbit but most of the time it's fine! I don't have a problem with trousers Confused.

Sometimes I do think I'd like to add a couple of inches so that I could eat more!

DH is a foot taller than me. No problems there either - I stand on my tip toes and he crouches down!

OhChristFENTON · 28/09/2012 09:50

I'm 5' er nothing.

The only thing that has ever bothered me about my height is the way clothes hang on me, - coats particularly always look like they belong to someone else, the waist never sits in the right place and make me look dumpy.

Thankfully though there are many places that do 'petite' lines, equally there are 'tall' lines available.

If it helps OP, we can buy the same maxi dress and you can have the 5 inches I have to cut off the bottom to sew onto yours if you like Grin

I do sympathise.

tallwivglasses · 28/09/2012 09:51

5ft 8? Pah. Short-arse. Grin Where on earth are you buying trousers and maxi skirts from that they flap around your ankles? Next, M&S, even supermarkets these days sell different lengths. Long Tall Sally lengths would swamp you, unless your legs go up to your armpits. Yabu.

I love that there's so many 6 ft mnetters. I felt like an alien in my youth but here I feel quite at home.

LizLemon007 · 28/09/2012 09:51

in answer to the 'what sports are you good at?' question, hmmm, maybe only sports that are solo. LIke in a circuit trainign class or a kickboxing class I'll be the last man standing. I ran and did hurdles at school and the teacher didn't say 'oh that's good for 5'2"' she said, that's good, we'll enter you in the leinsters. I HATE competing though. Hated hockey, netball, football, bah! i even hate twister. But if I'm only representing myself, and not my team, I go for it. I mustn't say that at an interview! team player!? no no way!

LizLemon007 · 28/09/2012 09:53

RE eating more if you're taller! I fantasise think about this too, but maybe if I were taller i would also be hungrier???

OhChristFENTON · 28/09/2012 09:54

Same here Robin I don't feel short either, and DH is also a good foot taller than me.

I do feel a bit hobbit like when stood among my nieces though, all of them 5'9" + damn them and their lovely long legs up to here Wink

OhChristFENTON · 28/09/2012 09:55

I love that tallwivglasses you have revealed you are indeed tall, I've often wondered.

thisthreadwilloutme · 28/09/2012 09:58

I am 5ft, I stopped growing at 11. You have to love what you've got because it's not going to change. I embrace the positives, the fact people think I am cute, petite, dainty etc because there's no point fighting it.

FerrisBueller1972 · 28/09/2012 10:02

Another 6ft one here Grin I would not swap my height for anything!

King Size duvet works perfectly for me, never get cold feet!

I don't struggle getting longer length clothing (although its pissed me off that a lot of the High St type shops now only stock their Tall clothing online)

The wight thing doesn't make sense to me at all! Being tall helps you to carry off being a bit overweight as its stretched out a bit!

Embrace the tallness!! We rock Grin

Dontbugmemalone · 28/09/2012 10:22

I'm 5ft and it's not easy, as other posters have already mentioned.

  1. Nothing fits, trousers swap me and most long sleeved tops make look as if I've got no hands.
  2. If you put a little bit of weight on, it's very noticeable and you feel like a potato. I had DS 3 months ago and feel very flabby.
  3. If you have big boobs like me, they take up so much room. I feel like only boobs and muffin top at the moment
  4. You feel very small when you're standing/talking to a taller person. Sometimes they treat like a child.
  5. When I carry my children, I feel even smaller.
  6. It's very hard to adjust the car seat to a comfortable height and if the sun is in your eyes, the sun shield thing doesn't do much to help.
  7. You can never reach anything!

On the plus side, I sometimes buy something from the teenage/kids sections but not until I lose the baby weight now Sad

Dontbugmemalone · 28/09/2012 10:24

that should be swamp

user12785 · 28/09/2012 10:29

Tall rules! Another 6fter here. I only wish my feet were smaller. Being a 9.5 is a PITA.

SomersetONeil · 28/09/2012 10:32

Jaysus, I'm 5'9" and wear heels to supplement my perceived short-arseness...!

I'm a size 10/12 and while my weight - 67kg - might be heavy for someone shorter than me, on me, it means leggy and, if not skinny, slim.

Wish I was taller!

smoothieooo · 28/09/2012 10:32

I'm 5'9" and don't wish I were shorter, but would very much like to find a taller man. STBEx-H was a short arse and I felt foolish holding hands with him in public. I make sure I walk tall and don't stoop, plus I can get away with carrying a bit of extra weight without it being noticeable

LittleAbruzzenBear · 28/09/2012 10:33

I would love to be your height, I'm 5'2"!

NotWilliamBoyd · 28/09/2012 10:33

Hmm see I sometimes say that I would love to be 5' 6'' and am pissed off that I must have been that height once but was too young to appreciate it at the time......... Smile

I'm 5' 11'' (sister and parents both over 6' so I'm the little one). I'm 3'' taller than DH - he is not bothered at all by it and thnks it funny that both our DC look likely to tower over him when adults.

My worst problem with clothes is that I have a really long back, so longer length trousers etc don't really help - smart stuff, blouses/dresses/suits for work are a nightmare. I do sometimes use LTS for work stuff but I don't particularly like their stuff, find it v. over-priced for what it is and they tend to use strange fabrics.

Oh and with regard to little people being shoved around in queues/on public transport etc, I find the opposite - if out with short friends they seem to be left more space whereas I'm clearly Amazonian so can be shoved around a bit.

sorry, have ranted on there

Chandon · 28/09/2012 10:40

Which poster said the being unforgettable thing?

People always remember me, it seems, as I am so very tall.

I remember walking into a conference room, everyone was sitting down. i am over 6 ft, but decided to wear heels that day. As I clipclopped into the room, the whole room fell silent and stared... The room was massive (more a hall, with wooden floors) so it seemed I had to walk an endless amount to get to the tables. In that 1 minute it taught me the value of attitude (can't slouch or be shy when you are tall in heels). It made for a good start. (It does not even matter if they thought: she looks amazing! or "she looks crazy tall" teh fact is that I made an entrance, and that was fun)

Also, long legs are a good thing. And, this is the best thing, you can intimidate annoying men just by standing next to them and looking down!

FreudiansGoldSlipper · 28/09/2012 10:40

I am 5'2 and I quite liked being small until I put on a stone, have a small build so it really really shows. You have to choose clothes more carefully very easy to look like you are wearing caressing up clothes

And I have to ask others to reach things for me and people do treat you differently well in my case like I am less likely to be capable, little lady you need help that sort of thing at times infuriating other times does not help that I have a girlish voice

I have always attracted very tall men most 6'2ish

OhChristFENTON · 28/09/2012 10:41

Has anyone else got Skee-lo's "I wish I was a little bit taller, I wish I was a baller" going round in their head now?

Just me then.

nokidshere · 28/09/2012 10:42

I am 5ft 2 and would love a bit more height! My DH is 6ft7, my 13 year old is already 5ft10 and my 11 year old is now 5ft5 - I have rapidly become the shortest person in the house!

On the plus side I make them all do stuff that I can't reach and used to stand on a chair for Grin
