To wish I was shorter?

Ecgwynn · 28/09/2012 07:46

I'm not even that tall (5'8") but I have several issues with my height:

  1. My feet poke out from under the duvet (I like it right up over my shoulders) and they get chilly.
  2. My husband is an inch shorter than me and it makes me feel less feminine.
  3. Trousers and maxi dresses flap around my ankles.
  4. Shorter skirts and dresses are a little bit obscene on me (I'm a secondary school teacher so I try not to flash my pants at work).
  5. I would weigh less if I were shorter.

no, me too! "i wish i was a little bit taller" is such a funny song

Tigresswoods · 28/09/2012 10:43

I'm 5'9. I've never been concerned about anything you say on your OP. maybe get a bigger bed?

FreudiansGoldSlipper · 28/09/2012 10:44

Yes some twats will try to intimidate you because you are small harder to do with someone taller than you

At least when I buy trousers in Zara there is enough material once I have taken them up to make another pair for myself that's a plus

smoothieooo · 28/09/2012 10:46

Fenton I used to hum that song around ex to piss him off!

OhChristFENTON · 28/09/2012 10:47

That's wicked, smoothie Grin

booksinbed · 28/09/2012 10:48

im 5 ft- you are not thinner /lighter necessarily if shorter - its seems easier to put weight on as there only a few inches between bust a waist !! and little room to actually put the additional weight/spread it out......As an aside in meetings with sofas i have to perch on end or sit with legs sticking out like a gril which does not do prof image much good ha ha.i dont mind really !!!!but at least if you ae tall ish your feet can reach the floor.i mean those deep sofas obviously not standard ones which are fine ......!!!!!

diddl · 28/09/2012 10:59

Oh yes-I´m in danger of looking like a barrel if the weight doesn´t stop creeping on.

And not being able to reach the floor so generally end up sitting with feet tucked underneath self.

As for getting onto a bar stool??!!

LittleAbruzzenBear · 28/09/2012 11:03

booksinbed Grin at the sofa, I would be right next to you with my legs dangling... Ho hum...but I guess I look young for my age so not all bad. Agree with the weight thing, so unfairly easy to put it on for us shorties. I look at a pie or cake and I may as sell sellotape it to my bottom.

Ephiny · 28/09/2012 11:03

Yes I look like a round little dumpling if my weight goes over 8st :(

Even when I'm very slim for my height, I never ever have that elegant willowy look that tall women do, I just look childish.

tallwivglasses · 28/09/2012 11:07

Fenton I wear specs too! The nn comes from when before I had an office. I'd meet new clients in cafes and always describe myself as 'tall, with glasses' so they could find me. This nn makes me potentially very outable which I didn't think of at the time...

Now. About men. I have a theory that really tall men are attracted to tiny women and that said women really should leave the tall men for us Has anyone noticed this or is it just me?

delphie · 28/09/2012 11:08

and 5' 1" would love to be 5'8" - don't assume you would weigh less if you were shorter you might weigh the same and just be rounder Shock

Well yes I guess there's something we'dd all ike to change. Lots of us would liek to be perfect even though I'm not sure we're able to define what that is (becasue we all know damn well it doesn;t exist and even if it did we'd change our minds once we were).

But its nothing to do with the practicalities you mentioned surely?

Duvet - get your own duvet if sharing it is a problem
Buy things that fit
Don't be ridiculous about what you weigh, its how you feel thats important.

The reaility you "feel huge" - thats what you need to address and the fact that you equate feminine with smaller. Better people than me could probably explain why that is but small and submissive is generally deemed more feminine in teh media. But it isn;t true and you don;t need to buy into that crap. Let Xenia be your new pin up Grin

amillionyears · 28/09/2012 11:14

I'm 5'1".
I find Dorothy Perkins petite trousers more or less fit.
I think there are advantages and disadvantages to not being of average height.
Random strangers talk to me,I think I dont look a threat to anyone.
I like standing out from the crowd,so being short doesnt bother me.
I naturally look a bit helpless,so people help me out.
Agree that if you are not averageish height, clothes shopping takes a lot longer than it takes other people, and definitely have less choice.

I

ethelb · 28/09/2012 11:16

@issima but if you are short, your feet are too small to be able to wear heels comfortably! (see further up thread)

Mrsjay · 28/09/2012 11:16

amillionyears ALL my trousers are Dorothy perkins trousers thats all that fit me properly

DameKewcumber · 28/09/2012 11:18

I'm 5'9" and bigger than you and I don't struggle to find clothes that fit or a duvet thats big enough. Duvets can accomodate all but the tallest of men so I think your duvet issue is nothing to do with your height.

Empusa · 28/09/2012 11:20

Another short person problem, neck ache from looking up at taller people! And don't even talk to me about kissing taller people!

Empusa · 28/09/2012 11:22

"As for getting onto a bar stool??!!"

Oh god! Have you ever had the mortifying experience of some "helpful" person deciding to lift you up onto a bar stool like you were a small child?

Why do so many people treat short people as if they were dolls?

StrawberrytallCAKE · 28/09/2012 11:24

I'm 5'11 and 7 months pg, tonight and tomorrow night I will be wearing heels to go out in. Don't ever be ashamed of your height because you will never change it.

StrawberrytallCAKE · 28/09/2012 11:26

Me and dh bought a super king bed & duvet (he is 6'4) it's the best way, doubles weren't made for tall people.

Empusa,I like people treating me a bit like a doll!
They are looking after me,its nice.

Mrsjay,I got a pair of trousers last year from Debenhams,I think they were petite, cant remember.Debenhams might be worth a try for you as well?

MrsRobertDuvallHasRosacea · 28/09/2012 11:29

Chandon...it was me. The "unforgettable" one. But you forgot who I was Grin
I do presentations, and love striding down a hall with my 35ins inside legs. Makes me feel powerful.
However, on days when hair looks shit and I have a spot, I long to be slightly less obvious.

And whoever was raving about Long Tall Sally.. you are wrong. It is not good at all.

Lonelynessie · 28/09/2012 11:30

I hate being 5'10. Hate hate hate it! I've recently slimmed my way back in to a size 10 (from 15 stone) and I vowed to wear heels more, but when I do I just feel silly, towering over most men. I find it really embarrassing :( my posture is also not very good as I find I slouch to make myself smaller :(

I think it comes from being the tallest child in my class and everyone used to say 'ohh, aren't you tall' etc. All the pointing it out made me feel very insecure.
