Aibu to not *get* coriander

It tastes like soap.

Leaf coriander that is. The ground stuff is relatively nice.

But the leaf stuff tastes like soap.

Why spoil a nice curry with a mouthful of soap.

Or the complete obsession with Carrot and Soup Soup

Or a sainsbury's fajita wrap.

It tastes like soap.

YANBU. It smells like something unholy and vile!

DownbytheRiverside · 03/11/2011 21:32

At last!
Absolutely. I love most spices and herbs and have eaten some very exotic historical recipes. But coriander tastes of soap.

YANBU, its nasty !

GetOrfMo1Land · 03/11/2011 21:33

I love coriander. I always chop a load of it up and throw it all over curries.

My FIL is like you, he was too polite to say 'getorf, I hate that crap' so has eaten corainder for 4 years when eating at my house, dutifully munching away. It wasn't until my MIL got tiddly 6 months ago and told me he hated it that I knew.

I think it is great.

But I agree that Carrot and coriander soup is revolting.

And I detest sage so I understand the herb hatred.

Esta3GG · 03/11/2011 21:34

YABU - fresh coriander is delicious. Trouble is that most stuff you buy in British supermarkets is crap.

Shutupanddrive · 03/11/2011 21:35

Yabu I love it!!!

squeakytoy · 03/11/2011 21:36

It is personal taste isnt it. I love it. I will eat it raw off the plant that is on my kitchen windowsill, raw on salads, in currys, stir fry, salsa.. I absolutely love the taste of it.

On the other hand, I hate dill and cant stand the smell or taste of it.

floweryblue · 03/11/2011 21:36

Totally agree, tastes like soap in leaf form.

GetOrfMo1Land · 03/11/2011 21:36

I always get mine from an Indian grocer - you get great big handfuls of it for 50p, and it is always fresh. Same goes with the garlic and ginger (I don't know what they do to garlic in supermarkets, it is always stale and rancid, but garlic from the Indian grocers is plump and fresh tasting).

minipie · 03/11/2011 21:36

I think I remember reading that some people have a different gene which makes coriander taste like soap? So it actually tastes different to different people. I could be making this up though

Doesn't taste like soap to me. Tastes delicious. Especially in guacamole or in stews.

SazZandASparkler · 03/11/2011 21:36

I LOVE coriander. My very good friend HATES it.

Marmite me thinks....

GreenEyesandNiceHam · 03/11/2011 21:36

How can you not like coriander Shock

It's so lovely and fresh! I eat it on everything, even fruit.

Tell you what I don't like it on though, those garlic and coriander naan breads, it just tastes burnt.

2rebecca · 03/11/2011 21:36

I love it.

Shutupanddrive · 03/11/2011 21:36

Carrot and soup soup? Grin

Bathsheba · 03/11/2011 21:36

I can't even believe that someone, somewhere ever thought it was edible...

Surely at the 'big meeting where they decided what stuff was edible' someone must have stood up and shouted 'NO'

2rebecca · 03/11/2011 21:37

Doesn't taste remotely like soap to me.

GetOrfMo1Land · 03/11/2011 21:37

esta are you a namechanger - I read your brilliant posts on the Samaritan's purse thread and think I recognise your posting style.

Soups · 03/11/2011 21:37

YABVVVVVVVU

EverybodysScaryEyed · 03/11/2011 21:37

YANBU - can't stand the stuff

worse when it is put in a salad and looks like parsley (and should be parsley!) - bleurgh

GetOrfMo1Land · 03/11/2011 21:38

I think at that big meeting someone should have told them about broad beans.

I think that is supposed to be food for rabbits, not humans.

EmmaBemma · 03/11/2011 21:38

I love it myself, but it does seem to be a bit of a Marmite herb.

CMOTdibbler · 03/11/2011 21:39

can't stand it either. And everything seems to have coriander in atm

Shutupanddrive · 03/11/2011 21:40

I love broad beans too getorf!!!

bibbitybobbitybloodyaxe · 03/11/2011 21:40

O M F G!

Ya SO bu.

Coriander is almost my favourite thing in the world (behind roast chicken, roast lamb, potatoes, butter, marmite). How can you not APPRECIATE it? It is gorgeous.
