It tastes like soap.

Leaf coriander that is. The ground stuff is relatively nice.

But the leaf stuff tastes like soap.

Why spoil a nice curry with a mouthful of soap.

Or the complete obsession with Carrot and Soup Soup

Or a sainsbury's fajita wrap.

It tastes like soap.

It tastes like the time I accidentally got Fairy liquid in my mouth. Pure rank yuckiness. I used to work in a commercial herb nursery and it remains my least favourite.

EverybodysScaryEyed · 03/11/2011 21:40

I hate lemongrass as well. so glad i don't live in thailand!

Ephiny · 03/11/2011 21:41

I like it in soups etc, but not so much in salads and sandwiches, or at least only in very small amounts.

There's a Pret sandwich which for some reason has handfuls of the stuff in, and it's far, far too much, it's all you can taste. I usually end up pulling most of it out.

trumpton · 03/11/2011 21:42

I think the things tasting v different to different people is completely true, tbh.

I have a devil food I cannot abide, which the vast majority of the population feel neutral or positive about, but to me it tastes sulphorous and rotten.

I believe coriander is one of those.

usualsuspect · 03/11/2011 21:44

YANBU

Vile stuff

BecauseImWorthIt · 03/11/2011 21:44

I love coriander and I love broad beans.

Is there some kind of massive Venn diagram here, do you reckon?

YABU. It's lovely stuff. We buy ours fresh from the Asian shop, chop it up and freeze it and use it for whenever we need it.

schroeder · 03/11/2011 21:45

I used to hate it too, then when I was pregnant with ds 13 years I went for a curry and that was it.

Now I love it, best off a growing plant though, as the bunches of cut stuff always seems too strong.Confused

peacypops · 03/11/2011 21:45

minipie I think you're right - I remember reading about a genetic factor that makes some people totally averse to the taste.

LeBOF · 03/11/2011 21:45

It is VILE stuff. I make my children chew some if I catch them swearing.

ScabbyHorse · 03/11/2011 21:47

I tried freezing it and it went rancid. Mnd you I don't really like it anyway!

mousyfledermaus · 03/11/2011 21:48

yanbu
especially if you expect it to be parsley and tuck in.
vile stuff!

squeakytoy · 03/11/2011 21:48

that is really interesting about the taste difference in people... I am glad I like the taste though. :)

Coriander has a lot of health benefits too.

GetOrfMo1Land · 03/11/2011 21:49

How strange - to me it doesn't taste of soap at all, it just tastes really fresh and like...um...coriander.

I wonder if there is a genetic affliction which means people taste it differently.

There are very few things I actively dislike, broad beans (they are VILE, so bitter and chewy) and cucumber spring to mind.

ScabbyHorse · 03/11/2011 21:49

Ha LeBOF!

trumpton · 03/11/2011 21:52

You are not alone I Hate Coriander somebody look at my lovely link !! Grin]

ColdSancerre · 03/11/2011 21:52

I love fresh coriander. GetOrf I get so sick of dried out supermarket garlic, we have an Indian grocers in town so will check out their garlic supplies.

SazZandASparkler · 03/11/2011 21:52

GetOrf - you need to steam and peel your broad beans. They are delicious, like little sweets.

VivaLeBeaver · 03/11/2011 21:54

I had a curry in Barcelona once where they'd put parsley rather than coriander in the curry. I can only assume it was a mistake, as I don't speak Spanish I couldn't ask but the curry was terrible.
