Anyone doing Dry January 2021?

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 28/12/2020 17:39

I was going to go sober this year...but for various reasons (excuses) it didn't happen. DP and I have agreed to try Dry January as we are both drinking too much. Anyone else fancy coming along for the ride?

I have decided to combine DJ with 5 a day. So my wine replacement will be some fresh fruit or vegetable.

I have tried other drinks in the past but generally find them too sweet or too fizzy. AF beer is usually good and tastes pretty much like normal beer.

Am using a units app.

MsCristina · 01/01/2021 12:19

Thinking of doing some boxes of ready chopped up fruit and veg to keep in fridge for easy snacking

wizzbangfizz · 01/01/2021 12:22

I'm in I am determined my next drink will be feb 5th.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 01/01/2021 12:39

I also said I would have a day off later in the month for mine and DP's anniversary. I may decide not to once we get there, but for the moment I'm accepting it as an allowable fall (off the wagon).

I don't think telling people they're not doing it right is overly helpful - even if any of us slip up, even reducing drinking for a day/week/fortnight has got to be beneficial. And we're all only human and I'd like to think we all feel we can rejoin this thread after a 'fall' without judgement.

I'm also taking part in RED January which is where you aim to do 30 minutes exercise every day in January. I did it last year and it started me back on C25k.

I also think it's fine for people to do this flexibly in a way that minimises slip ups. As long as you're not on here flaunting your shiraz at us that is Grin

ThelmaNotLouise · 01/01/2021 12:44

Thanks OP, I agree people shouldn't dictate to others how they choose to do Dry Jan. Everyone's back story is different, everyone has different pressures that will affect how they proceed. The fact they want to do it is enough, surely.

theDudesmummy · 01/01/2021 12:49

I have not RTFT yet but: Count me in. I really want to succeed, need to lose weight and I have fallen into the habit of drinking every night as I have been working flexibly from home since March, so no pressure to get up, go to work at a certain time etc. It's put me into bad habits.

I am also going to do the exercise, even if just walking (I fell off a horse last week and broke or bruised my ribs so can't do anything more than that right now). And...did people know that today is the start of the International Year of Fruit and Vegetables...?

CumbrianExile · 01/01/2021 12:51

Can I jump on board to. Also hanging from last night 🤮 but also I need to lose weight and break the every night habit too!

Biggest test will be tonight. Its Friday night after all. And I usually have a few ciders watching the football as I cant be there, and we play tonight. Feeling pretty determined though so 🤞

Wannabangbang · 01/01/2021 12:57

I have a bottle of Cava, a tiny bit of gin left and some little bottles of snowballs. Think I'm going to finish these off over next few days and from Monday I'm in. Don't have issues surrounding alcohol but it will do my body good after all the lockdowns and celebrations to go with out alcohol for a month or so and also save me money win win. I could save the £10 a week i spend on wine and get something nice with itSmile

theDudesmummy · 01/01/2021 13:03

If I don't start today I will just put it off. I can't wait till there's no alcohol in the house as that is just not going to happen (no way DH will do Dry January). So me and my willpower just have to go it alone...

Trying to help myself by downloading the app and announcing my intention on here...

Whenisitbedtime · 01/01/2021 13:09

Hi everyone
I’m starting this today. Have a shocking hangover which is making it easy to start. I did it last year with the Try Dry app which is v motivating. I also did Dry Oct but on the run up to Christmas I’ve drunk every day.
Good to have a thread to help with motivation too. Good luck all

SantaMonicaPier · 01/01/2021 13:22

DH got me a cocktail making set for Xmas! I think I might find some non alcoholic recipes to replace the drinks I'd usually have. Any suggestions welcome!

Happytentoes · 01/01/2021 13:28

Hello all, I am starting today. Will be going back over this thread for some tips but thanks for the thread OP

MarciaMarciaMarcia · 01/01/2021 13:31

Dh and I are both in. Did it 2 years ago and went through Feb as well. Last year, not so successful.
But, I always start NY resolutions on Jan 2. In my mind, Jan 1 is for taking the xmas tree down, finishing all the food and drinks in the house and getting over the NYE hangover ( the fact that I didn't have one was not a good sign. I should have been dying today)Blush

wizzbangfizz · 01/01/2021 14:00

My main motivations are to reset my relationship with alcohol as recently it has not been healthy. I'm also hoping to lose some weight as I've been drinking a horrific amount of calories.

geillisduncan · 01/01/2021 14:06

There's loads of us, this is great. Feeling positive but apprehensive. I drink every day. Nearly a bottle of red every night. My face is bloated, I'm tired all the time, I've had enough. Goodness knows what damage I've done to my body. Lovely to know there are so many of us joining together supporting each other.

I think I need to join!

I’ve been drinking a bottle of wine a night for far too long. I know it doesn’t do me any good, physically or mentally but thinking about not having a drink for a whole month scares me. Blush
And that in itself is the reason I should do it.

I do have left over wine from last night so I’m going to finish that and then that’s it.

Off to find the try dry app...

theDudesmummy · 01/01/2021 15:35

This stuff is expensive but I used it for a few weeks last year when I had to stop drinking for quite a bit of caffeine in it, so don't drink before bed!

theDudesmummy · 01/01/2021 15:37

Oh sorry half my message diappeared. I meant to say I used it when I had to stop drinking for a while for an acute health reason. And that tyhe "Livener" one has quite a bit of caffeine.

CoronaIsWatching · 01/01/2021 15:47

Count me in. Is there a penguin thread this year? I poured the last of the xmas alcohol down the sink this morning, bought loads of nice soft drinks and stocked up on ice. Got the Try Dry app up and running again ready to collect my tea cups. Let's do this.

It's a bit harder this year as there's 5 saturdays in January rather than the 4 last year. But I'd rather see it as 31 days rather than weeks/weekends

theDudesmummy · 01/01/2021 15:51

I absolutely love both kombucha and water kefir, so have ordered a whole lot of those. They have a nicely grown-up taste without being alcohol.

@CoronaIsWatching - I have been on the penguin threads previously - waves a flipper Smile.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 01/01/2021 17:04

Penguins?

If anyone else wants the colouring sheet can you PM your email address and I'll send it from my phone - can't work out another way to do it.
