Anyone doing Dry January 2021?

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 28/12/2020 17:39

I was going to go sober this year...but for various reasons (excuses) it didn't happen. DP and I have agreed to try Dry January as we are both drinking too much. Anyone else fancy coming along for the ride?

Defo me!! I need to do this for myself

TeaRose29 · 01/01/2021 17:49

Like a PP above I'm going to take a photo of my face every day and post it into my journal app - hoping to see some improvements in skin/hair etc. 😬😬. Claire Pooley said in her book "The Sober Diaries" that she got big hair when she stopped drinking. When I've had a few weeks off in the past, I've really noticed an improvement in my skin.

I've done DJ in previous years up to 28th (so 4 weeks under belt) as my birthday is on the 29th. I'll take a view on what to do this year, nearer the time. Would be nice to do the full month or even carry on.

Going to have a nice bottle of AF sparkling wine tonight.

TSBelliot · 01/01/2021 18:12

Can I join too - for me I plan to drink on nights out (not so many of those ahead!) and once a month. I need to reduce massively for health and horse reasons. Starting with January and seeing how I go.

AgnesNaismith · 01/01/2021 18:15

Anyone struggling with the lack of things to do? This time is exactly when I’ve been drinking and I just don’t know what to do with myself!!! I started knitting a few days ago but just don’t have the energy to pick it up right now. Urgh.

lilfoxfur · 01/01/2021 18:15

I just started today.

I wouldn't say I'm an alcoholic but I'm definitely alcohol dependent and I'm looking to break the hold it has on me. My gins are in a box under the bed and I'm ready to do this

PeacheyPeach · 01/01/2021 18:20

Hello all
Have started today hoping to carry on through the next few months. Installed the dry app, did the quiz and it seems I've been drinking about 80 units a week am actually amazed I'm still alive 😣 bit of a shocker and a bit of a wakeup call

MoonBaby1 · 01/01/2021 18:40

Hi everyone, I’m jumping on board. I’m 36 and drink every night. Calculated at about 60 units per week Shock.

I’ve gained so much weight especially around my middle. I’m finally doing this for my health and not to prove something to myself.

Hepzibar · 01/01/2021 19:10

MoonBaby1same here.
Just trying to get through Day 1 - Slimline tonic water in hand.

AgnesNaismith · 01/01/2021 19:20

Just having one of DH’s 0.0% Heineken - pretty good!

SantaMonicaPier · 01/01/2021 19:50

I'm about to make a cup of night time tea. First day without alcohol since 18 Dec I think...

MsCristina · 01/01/2021 19:51

Evening all. My DS just cooked the most delicious curry so washed it down with some AF beer.

I agree about finding stuff to do instead of drinking. I definitely drink when bored.

I've lined up some pulp fiction to read plus sudokus.

Have also eaten an apple.Halo

ADMum20 · 01/01/2021 19:53

I’ve so far discovered tonic with half a lemon squeezed in gives me a ‘jaw smack’ similar to wine, so that’s good. I’m just booorrrreeddd! Would go and sort out a drawer or something, but have been sorting all day so can’t be arsed!

I have some of this arriving tomorrow... seems people either love or hate it, so will see and report back.

iftherewereahorseyinthehouse · 01/01/2021 19:56

I'm in - day one successfully done! I drink at least 30 units a week and over Christmas week it's been much more, feel fat and sluggish so quite looking forward to a break. DP is doing it too which helps. We have loads of wine in the house so will see how long I last. Homeschooling and work stress are my triggers but to be honest I'll use any excuse for a drink. Started running in March and I find that helps but I've been taking a break with an injury, hoping to get back into it this month as a distraction.

I have lurked on the dry threads before so I get the penguin reference 🐧 😃

Haggisfish · 01/01/2021 20:06

I’ve done day 1-hurray! I average 28 units a week. Drank a whole bottle of wine last night and felt dreadful all day.

10littlepirates · 01/01/2021 20:16

The first day was fairly easy due to the hangover from yesterday! I have eaten a lot of chocolate / biscuits though... Tomorrow will be harder I think as I'll be feeling ok and we have a zoom dinner with friends. I'll try some tonic water I think. Some more soft drinks arriving in the food delivery next week. Well done all who have started and ticked off day 1!

OhioOhioOhio · 01/01/2021 20:22

I love the tonic water and half a lemon idea pp.

Els1e · 01/01/2021 20:22

Like others, I didn’t want a drink due to having too much yesterday. Only another 30 days to go.

OhioOhioOhio · 01/01/2021 20:23

Oh the daily photo idea is excellent too.

Allycat · 01/01/2021 20:40

Joining in too please!
Been drinking nightly and need to lose the wine baby that is growing in my belly!
We can do it!!

showmethegin · 01/01/2021 20:42

Hi all can I join?

Never tried to quit before (apart from in pregnancy when obv didn't touch a drop) but I really need a break. We've had a shit year in 2020 (haven't we all) and I had two miscarriages. I've been using alcohol as a crutch and drinking more and more, it's definitely depressing me and is preventing me from dealing with our issues productively.

I'm actually really looking forward to it. We're going to start TTC again in 3 months so I'm going to use this as an incentive to get fitter and healthier in general.

showmethegin · 01/01/2021 20:42

Just realised my user name Grin

Looneytune253 · 01/01/2021 20:46

How has everyone's first day gone? I've managed ok and my bottle is still actually in the house but haven't touched it today. Will get DH to take it elsewhere for tomorrow though which will make it easier. This app is quite cool which gives you a bit of a visual and might help over the month.

Anyone doing Dry January 2021?
DefNotDeadYet · 01/01/2021 21:01

Like others above, today has been easy as I'm hanging from yesterday. 😂

I think the photo idea is brilliant, I've just taken mine and I look as rough as anything, I don't think it will be difficult to make an improvement! Good luck, all.

PeacheyPeach · 01/01/2021 21:20

A nice drink to have is tonic and some bitter lemon. Have it in the glass you would usually have a gin and tonic in or your wine glass and it feels like a treat x

Youngatheart00 · 01/01/2021 21:21

Decided I’d feel like a cheat if I did drink the red wine with our steak tonight so I stuck to water and feel very virtuous!

Drank a herbal tea this evening whilst watching telly and just done a face mask and going to get an early night with my book.

Really looking forward to caring for my body over the next month and hoping it leads to some lasting good habits!
