Anyone doing Dry January 2021?

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 28/12/2020 17:39

I was going to go sober this year...but for various reasons (excuses) it didn't happen. DP and I have agreed to try Dry January as we are both drinking too much. Anyone else fancy coming along for the ride?

I drank more than usual too, don’t have a hangover which shows what a high tolerance I have. Disturbed sleep though.
I’m cooking a roast today ( I never cook usually as I’m a terrible cook, I’m treating DH to a day off!)
I usually pour a glass of wine before serving up so that will be my first habit to break today.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 01/01/2021 10:04

I drank loads last night, mixed drinks too (gin, wine, champagne) and ought to be feeling like death but worryingly I feel fine.

DP has decided we're starting tomorrow as it's his family tradition to have a roast dinner with wine on NYD. I could resist but my willpower is crap and there's still wine in the house. Blush

I hope you don't all think I'm a failure before I've even started.

I have a bottle of AF sparkling.

I am about to drag children and dogs out for a walk followed by the drive through McDonalds.

TanglinOrchards · 01/01/2021 10:06

Add a day onto the end. :)

No judgement here. x

InTheseUncertainTimes · 01/01/2021 10:12

Yup. Day 1. We had the last of the wine last night, but I'm relieved I poured the last of the cheap Christmas cake brandy down the sink, rather than tried to drink that too. Happily no hangover.

WhiskersPete · 01/01/2021 10:15

Hi everyone. I'm in too. I have done DJ once before a few years ago and it was good to reset the balance.

I don't drink in the week due to work and don't miss it but then love a weekend drink so that will be my tricky times. I think weekend two I will struggle.

I want to see if my mental health improves. Good luck to all.

NearWildHeaven · 01/01/2021 10:17

Like @FoxandFeathers I had a few large drinks which doesn't even dent any more. It would have done last NY.

I'm so ready for this. I need it.

Day One 🎉

ADMum20 · 01/01/2021 10:17

2 bottles of Prosecco yesterday with very few soft drinks, certainly nothing after 3pm... Absolutely no whiff of a hangover which just shows how tolerant I’ve become. Absolutely LOADS of alcohol in the house so not sure whether to move to the garage out of the way. Will see how we go.

Day 1...

FoxandFeathers · 01/01/2021 10:20

Haha, I’m glad I’m not the only not suffering one. Not that I’m proud of it, I am always a bit embarrassed to admit how much I drink in real life.

Looneytune253 · 01/01/2021 10:38

Woo day one!! I still have plenty of alcohol in the house including a 3/4 full bottle of vodka. Would you bin it? It seems such a waste of money but it would be too tempting for me I think. I could pop it in my MILs drinks cabinet until a later date.

Rolo1324 · 01/01/2021 10:52

I'm in Smilejust watched myself singing on a video I made of myself last night so I could see what I was like drunk Hmm and it's definitely needed day one begins

WelshMammy123 · 01/01/2021 10:57

Day 1 here as well and I'm feeling rough after drinking way too much last night. But I'm determined this time to at least do the month and then hopefully go AF longer term. I've downloaded the app and am listening to Allan Carrs book. I'm worried about failing as it's important to me to stop for the month. Anyway let's do this!

Darker · 01/01/2021 11:01

I hope you don't all think I'm a failure before I've even started. Not at all. Jan 1st is just a date.

cakegoblin · 01/01/2021 11:04

I’m also in. Thank you Flabbered for starting the post. Will post more later, just wanted to join the thread and commit quickly as a mini bottle of fizz is staring at me from the fridge.

MrsMiaWallis · 01/01/2021 11:05

I think I'll probably start on the 2nd. We've got fillet of beef and one bottle of red and one of prosecco left. I'd rather drink them today (with dh and the dds) than know they are there for a month!

Youngatheart00 · 01/01/2021 11:14

I’m another who’s definitely in but also have a bottle of really decent red from Xmas and I’m cooking steak for DH and I New Years Day dinner. So we will share that but nothing before or after!

I need to have surgery in late feb so today might be the last day I drink for a good while!

I need to lose weight in prep for the surgery (BMI has crept over 30) and the amount of alcohol calories I’ve consumed this year is scary. My skin is awful too. Dry and spotty at the same time!

AgnesNaismith · 01/01/2021 11:39

I am quite vain so I’ve decided to encourage myself I’ll take a make up free pic in the sun every day this month...to see what difference it makes.

It is for this reason I’m not going to take a full body picture!!

I feel quite strong today, I know I’m doing a good thing and I genuinely want to!

ThelmaNotLouise · 01/01/2021 11:47

I hadn't intended to do Dry January after stopping for the whole of September, but after drinking too much daily in the run up to Christmas and beyond, I am now keen for a reboot. When I saw this thread I thought I'd join in, even if I only end up doing a fortnight (hope that's allowed!). I generally only drink at weekends anyway, as the nature of my OH's job means he has super-early starts and a full on day that puts him off drinking in the week so it's easy to fall in with that, then just drink on Fri/Sat night.

However, I really want to cut down on the weekend sessions! I don't want to give up drinking completely, I like the taste and the sociability too much, but I'd love to become one of those incredibly moderate drinkers who has one glass occasionally and that's it. I have been trying for the past few months, with some success, to adopt the French approach of having a small glass or two with dinner then stopping, after being inspired by the book French Women Don't Get Fat. The author said no self-respecting French women would take the rest of the bottle into the front room afterwards to slump in front of the telly! Blush Obviously I'm sure some French women do, but I have found it's a lovely way to enjoy a tipple still, because I really savour the wine more when sitting down at the table to eat. Anyhow, that plan went out of the window as Christmas approached and wine on the sofa became a nightly thing, so after having some AF weeks, I want to stick to that going forward.

Good luck everyone! Flowers

DefNotDeadYet · 01/01/2021 11:57

As it was me who said she was going to take the day off for her birthday later in the month, I agree with the PP who said that wasn't really in the spirit of Dry Jan (sorry for the bad pun). To preserve my self respect, I will have an amazing takeaway instead Wink.

Emmie12345 · 01/01/2021 11:59

Hey! I am doing it can I join ?

Had wild cocktail party with my 18 year old son and gf, my 17 year old son and 11 year old daughter ( who was mocktails obv)

Have a headache today !

Lushmetender · 01/01/2021 11:59

Count me in also. Drinking way too much! Need to reset the equilibrium and try to start jogging again but been feeling too fed up with all this covid - the lockdown. Not going anywhere, work and kids home schooling (plus effect it had on kids).

OhioOhioOhio · 01/01/2021 12:00

Me too! It's such a stupid habit that I've been doing far too much of.

Nomaj · 01/01/2021 12:01

Good luck all.

I did it last year and although it was hard, the first couple of weeks the worst, it was worth it.

And actually I ended up not drinking all year after dry January. It was a bit weird, finished the month and then it felt a bit odd to go back to drinking again, so I didn’t. And that was 11 months ago now.

Don’t regret anything, feel so much better and saved a small fortune. I would have never thought I could stop drinking but dry January really was the kick I needed. I was also a habitual drinker with a glass of wine most evenings.

I would recommend finding something to replace your alcohol in the first few weeks, I got a load of appletise cans in, for when I was itching for something in a class in the evening.

Jemimapuddleduk · 01/01/2021 12:03

I’m in! Have a rotten hangover today. Need a reset.

mamaoffourdc · 01/01/2021 12:18
