Anyone doing Dry January 2021?

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 28/12/2020 17:39

I was going to go sober this year...but for various reasons (excuses) it didn't happen. DP and I have agreed to try Dry January as we are both drinking too much. Anyone else fancy coming along for the ride?

I did it for last 2 years so want to do it this year. It doesn't help me lose weight. I need sugar free January for that!!!

MsCristina · 30/12/2020 02:34

I have found it good for weight loss but mainly because I don't like sweet stuff. I know a few people have found themselves replacing alcohol with sweet things.

However I do think it helps to try not to give up too many things at s time do for me alcohol is the main thing

BunniesBunniesBunnies · 30/12/2020 06:58

Welcome new people☺️

TanglinOrchards · 30/12/2020 07:18

Morning! Bounce bounce. Very excited about starting.

BooksMusicSnacks · 30/12/2020 11:56

I'll join. I need to. Once I start drinking I find it hard to stop. I'm using it as some sort of emotional crutch, I drink far too much and it isn't good for me or anyone around me, despite how functional and normal I may seem.

I managed 19 days earlier this year but genuinely think I need to cut alcohol out altogether. Dry Jan will be a good start...

TessApricot · 30/12/2020 13:17

Hello all,
Two lockdowns, Christmas and a love of wine/food have made me drink more than ever this year. My husband is planning on doing dry-ish January (he said he still wants wine with his Sunday roast) and I wasn’t going to do it but I am starting to think I should. I did two weeks off in November and it actually felt really freeing to not even think about alcohol. I spend so much time wondering whether to have a drink or not that night and it was nice not thinking about it! I could also do with losing a bit of weight which I know is linked to wine and nibbles. I am going to go all in though and not do the Sunday drinking like DH.
Good luck everyone!

neverenoughchelseaboots · 30/12/2020 18:11

I'd like to join please. I generally have wine every evening but started to have dry days mid-week a few weeks ago and felt much better for it.

But with Christmas I'm back to having a drink everyday so really want to do dry jan (and much less beyond) to get into much better habits for my health.

Connellschain · 30/12/2020 18:36

I’d love to join as well please. I’ve been drinking more and more recently & found myself pissed the other night at 9pm at home, alone for no reason whatsoever.
I need some hand holding as having a drink has become a daily treat and I’m starting to dread not drinking

TeaRose29 · 30/12/2020 18:37

I’m in! Don’t drink excessively but have at least 2 glasses of wine most evenings, and desperately need a reset. Champagne and cocktails on NYE then I start on J1. Will be great to have a support thread. x

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 30/12/2020 18:45

Welcome to all the new joiners. The more the merrier (in a non-alcohol related way). It's good we've got a few of us for mutual support. Remember, no judgement and there's no right or wrong way to go about this. Glitterball

@TanglinOrchards

Message withdrawn at poster's request.
I did not request my post being witrhdrawn! I said something about being happy and excited to begin. Hmm
ThroughThickAndThin01 · 30/12/2020 19:23

Me, serious about it this year. 2020 has definitely been the year of hitting the wine/Prosecco bottle. And December has been particularly wet! All my family drinking tonight and I have only had one glass of Prosecco, can’t face another, I just feel sodden. Can’t wait to start although I know it will be hard.

Starting on the 3rd though as birthday celebration on the 2nd but will continue into start of February 🤞🏼.

TanglinOrchards · 30/12/2020 19:32

Been reinstated now. :) Thanks MNHQ for such a quick response!

NearWildHeaven · 30/12/2020 19:37

I'm in. Just been talking about this with DH. Similar to many of you I have drank far more this year than ever before and way more often. It's concerning me and I don't feel good for it. A month off to reset is a good start

Great idea OP, thanks!

Dogswotsits · 31/12/2020 07:02

I’m in..... have really cut down since October but crept up over the Christmas period and weight lost then now going back on! And this January it’s not like there’ll be social invites or pub visits to tempt us 😳

10littlepirates · 31/12/2020 07:02

I'm in too! I've definitely been having far too few alcohol free nights in 2020 and feel a bit of a reset and a healthy and positive start to 2021 would help my sleep, weight and mindset. Some champagne for today and then start tomorrow! Look forward to joining you all.

NorthernLights77 · 31/12/2020 07:27

Count me in please, have been about for a bit but couldn’t for the life of me log in to old mumsnet account so have created a new one. I have tried and failed for the best part of 18 months to kick alcohol and joined several threads at the beginning of 2020 only to fall off the wagon repeatedly. I have certainly cut down a lot in this time but not enough. I figure dry Jan is a good place to start!

wintertime6 · 31/12/2020 07:40

Count me in too!! I've tried too many times to stop but always end up drinking again. Got a good few alcohol free weeks in November but it has crept up again leading up to Christmas.

I hopefully have so much to look forward to in 2021 (if not thrown off course by the pandemic or any other disasters) which I need to be present for, and need the extra time and money I'll save to put my energy and finances into building our new house.

Quit lit really helped on my last attempts, I'm planning to get stuck into it, and crucially to keep reading it even after I've been stopped drinking for a week or two.

Good luck!

AuntieMarys · 31/12/2020 07:51

Yes. Planning to do no alcohol January and February. I did 2 months in the summer with no alcohol.
I need to lose a stone and this is the easiest way.

WelshMammy123 · 31/12/2020 08:34

Hi everyone. I came here specifically looking for a supportive thread for dry Jan so thrilled to have found you all. I have been toying with going AF for ages. I'm going to start by attempting dry Jan with a view to not starting drinking again afterwards but I'm trying to be kind to myself and not terrify myself with the whole 'this is it' thing.

As that last line probably suggests I enjoy a drink - mainly wine - and currently most evenings. I don't drink to drunk most nights but that's probably that my tolerance has built up. I do feel rough and like I've had a drink in the mornings even after just one glass.

I'm sick of being beholden to wine and want to sleep better and feel better. I'm on AD's for pnd and like many have had an awful year (i lost my Dad). I convince myself alcohol makes me feel better - but it doesn't. So it's time. I'll admit I'm scared of failing but so want to succeed. Sending good wishes to all.

iswhois · 31/12/2020 11:22

Yes count me in!!! Been making some really really questionable decisions whilst drinking lately. Need a fresh start!

Haggisfish · 31/12/2020 11:26

Me too! Will write more later.

Longdistance · 31/12/2020 11:29

🙋🏼‍♀️ I’m in. I do dry January every year successfully.
I drink far too much. Not because we were in lockdown, but in general.
I know I’ll feel better for it and need to lose the weight from it and to also avoid chopping my fingers off whilst cooking, which scared the shit out of me the other week. It was close Blush

Origamiheaven · 31/12/2020 11:37

Can I join please. I too need to address the nightly wine habit. It has been going on for too long now and need to kick it

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 31/12/2020 12:58

Lovely to see so many of us joining in.

My plan for the next week or so it to try different 'posh' soft drinks...(I love Elderflower pressé for example). That way I can still feel like I'm having a 'treat' it just won't be an alcoholic one.

I will not be trying alcohol free wine or spirits though
