Anyone doing Dry January 2021?

I was going to go sober this year...but for various reasons (excuses) it didn't happen. DP and I have agreed to try Dry January as we are both drinking too much. Anyone else fancy coming along for the ride?

I am in! DH and I have both been drinking too much and plan to to at least Jan AF. I also plan to eat less crap too. Lots of healthy food, cups of tea and long walks with the dog planned for January.

Is anyone thinking of trying to do anything instead of drinking?

I realise I’ve crept into a habit of having a drink every night far too early (as soon as I finish work some nights) and then ‘poof’, that’s it... all motivation for the evening is gone.

I really need to do a thorough top to bottom sort out and clean of the house. I’m figuring if I can just do even 30 mins a night instead of drink, I’d be in a better place by Feb. That will do quite a bit for my mental health. I’m hoping it will kick start me to continue drinking less come February (ie I’ll have formed new habits)

Anyone else have any ‘challenges’ they want to do in parallel?

I've printed off a couple of these-each day is marked by a segment. I'm going to colour in every day I exercise, and every day I do something musical. I might do one for every dry day too.

I'd love to join you all if that's ok. I'm guilty of treating myself to a bottle of wine for the slightest excuse....good day, hard day, end of the week etc. I always plan to save at least half the bottle but never manage it. I need to reset totally.

Northernsoullover · 31/12/2020 22:25

If I can make a drink suggestion? I bought a bottle of Lidl Deluxe Chardonnay fizzy grape juice. Its very dry, almost cider like. Its a nice alternative to sweet drinks.
I last tried a dry January in 2019. I lasted around 10 days Blush. But for my health I gave it another go in March 2019 and haven't had a drink since.
I'd thoroughly recommend reading Alcohol Lied to Me by Craig Beck and Alcohol Explained by William Porter. Just a warning though, after reading those you might decide to give up completely Wink. Good luck. Best thing I ever did

Count me in Smilelooking to lose weight and get into healthier habits.

UneFoisAuChalet · 31/12/2020 22:52

I’m in!

We’ve done dry January for the last five years. It’s amazing. For two we continued until my birthday - March 31st. This year was the third and we broke it whilst watching Boris lock us down on March 20th. And it was with Lime Absolut Vodka (vomit) because there was literally nothing left on the shelves that last Friday.

We usually collect all the booze in the house and store in the loft. Getting the Christmas decorations down this year, we found a bag filled with Baileys, Bucks Fizz, Tia Maria, red and white wine and vodka.

I’m hoping we make it to the end of March again in 2021.

merlotormalbec · 31/12/2020 23:16

Ooh can I join please? Should prob change my username. I used to drink a bottle of wine a night at least then I joined SW and didn't drink at all unless it was a special occasion then that was closely monitored. Since lockdown it's gone to pot. The scales aren't saying I've put on that much but my stomach looks about 4 months pregnant and my IBS has flared up massively. I'm doing dry jan and then however long I can after and really need some support. Was going to start on the 4th but I actually can't face any more junk food or alcohol!

Looneytune253 · 31/12/2020 23:19

Yes I defo need to. Drinking up to a litre of vodka over a long weekend and got to the point where I'm having at least a couple a night. I'm not in a good place alcohol wise so I've decided to stop altogether

MsCristina · 01/01/2021 02:17

Welcome to Day 1 fellow travellers. Hold tight. We can do it.

Not a day too soon

NorthernLights77 · 01/01/2021 06:45

Happy New Year everyone! Horrendous nights sleep, have a hormonal migraine in the works, AF will be easy for the next couple of days Envy (not envy) is usually around day 5 or 6 I really start to struggle. Feel so determined this time, we can do this!

TanglinOrchards · 01/01/2021 06:57

Morning!

I am planning on having a very spicy virgin mary for the witching hour today. Yum.

Darker · 01/01/2021 07:05

Can totally recommend the Try Dry app. I found it really helpful - I started Dry January last year and am still going! I didn’t even bother with a drink for New Year which I had promised myself after keeping going through Christmas.

I’ve done a few Dry January and Sober October’s etc and the app really made a difference.

SantaMonicaPier · 01/01/2021 08:08

I'm in. I feel dreadful today.

ApolloandDaphne · 01/01/2021 08:29

Morning all. I am ready!

newbie202020 · 01/01/2021 08:33

I'm in too (not to nitpick but it's not ^actually dry January if you take one 'day off'....)

Ticketybooboo · 01/01/2021 08:35

Me and my hangover are in too.

BellsaRinging · 01/01/2021 08:39

I'm in! I have too easily sunk into a pattern of a drink or two after work during lockdown, just because it's so easy and because work's so fucking monotonous and stressful at the dining room table.
New year, new outlook!

MiniDoofa · 01/01/2021 08:41

I’m in. Did it last year and vowed to be more moderate over the rest of the year but consumption has steadily crept up.
I’m tired, overweight and have terrible skin (acne at 44, wtf???). I know that objective not drinking makes total sense and I will start to feel better. Harder in practise tho.
Starting with some Schweppes agrum which is pleasant.
Coming up for 5pm in New Year’s Day here so need to stay strong for the next couple hours!🤞🏻😬

jelly79 · 01/01/2021 08:59

Yes yes yes! @BunniesBunniesBunnies I have felt that great feeling too and it's so worth it! I done 7 months 2019-2020 and started having the odd glass when the first lockdown kicked in. I don't drink a huge amount but it makes me feel like crap!
The best feeling for me was zero anxiety in that AF time! I am going for it again!

TessApricot · 01/01/2021 09:14

@Ticketybooboo

Me and my hangover are in too.
Me too! Knowing it was my last night I drank more than I usually would last night and have my first hangover in ages!
