Anyone doing Dry January 2021?

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 28/12/2020 17:39

I was going to go sober this year...but for various reasons (excuses) it didn't happen. DP and I have agreed to try Dry January as we are both drinking too much. Anyone else fancy coming along for the ride?

On the bottle it says garnish with peas!!

Blessex · 10/01/2021 20:02

@MintyCedric will give the merlot a miss then Grin

Blessex · 10/01/2021 20:07

@mrsnibblesisahero oooo yes I remember that Virgin Atlantic do a nice seedlip garden cocktail and I think it contained peas. Back when we used to have lives and travel!!!
@3orangekissesfromkazan yes I like that bite to a glass of Prosecco. Will let you know. It comes Tuesday.
I looked at the Gordon’s zero gin bottle and indeed it contains sucralose - which is great for calories but not for my taste buds. I cannot drink any diet drinks because of artificial sweetener. Apparently some people are super sensitive to it. I am one.
Drinking AF drinks doesn’t trigger me to want alcohol but I can fully understand those who want to avoid it in case tempted. I remember sober mummy saying how alcohol free lager got her through her witching hour and it is doing the same for me. But don’t go there if you feel it is too tempting. I also have a load of cordials as well - as you can see I need a lot of variety Wink

Another day done. Still chipping away.

Blessex · 10/01/2021 20:09

At what time do you all trust yourself to put the ‘no drinks today’ into the app?!

TSBelliot · 10/01/2021 20:23

I am going to add in Yoga this week. Then the week after I am going to ditch caffeine. I think if I focus on health improvements it will help me after this month too. I have in the past gone foe a jog after a few large drinks so could do with establishing some minimum exercise standards!

CandyLeBonBon · 10/01/2021 20:43

I just discovered that my abusive ex (who I'm well rid of) had just got engaged. I feel really weird. I don't want him back or anything and I'm well shot of him, but it's a bit jarring.

My default reaction would normally be to go and sink a bottle of wine. But I didn't and I'm not. And I gave alcohol in the house. I'm just not having it.

I feel a bit rubbish though.

And I gave to get up at 2:30am for work 😭

When I get in bed! Huge sense of satisfaction just before I go to sleep.
Blessex · 10/01/2021 20:50

@CandyLeBonBon oh Candy yes that is certainly news to unsettle anyone. Your best and kindest present to yourself is to not sink that bottle, have a lovely relaxing kind evening and go to bed. Whilst there stick two fingers up to your abusive ex and feel sorry for his new fiancé. Sending Flowers

mrsnibblesisahero · 10/01/2021 20:54

@Blessex not till bedtime here too!

mrsnibblesisahero · 10/01/2021 20:54

@CandyLeBonBon amazing stuff - well done you!

CandyLeBonBon · 10/01/2021 20:56

Thanks @Blessex - you're right. And my logical head thinks that. My emotional head is just upset that I got the shorty end of the stick instead of the happy ever after.

I've resisted the wine and am off to bed now anyway as I've got a stupidly early start!

Blessex · 10/01/2021 21:00

@CandyLeBonBon I would say that his new fiancé got the shorty end of the stick and you have got a lucky escape! Night night! Remember to stick those two fingers up.

Yes I tap into the app just before sleeping too and having taken off all my make up which is something when drinking I often don’t do :-(

OhioOhioOhio · 10/01/2021 21:11

Omg. What a strange realisation, that he has all that you have learned about him still to discover.

CandyLeBonBon · 10/01/2021 21:18

I'm sticking those fingers up right now @Blessex . Thanks for the nudge in the right direction 😁

TSBelliot · 10/01/2021 21:19

Candylebonbon you do have the happy ending even if it doesn’t quite feel like it:)

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 10/01/2021 21:20

If I'm struggling I put 'no drinks' in earlier as then I feel like I have to stick with it. Other days I wait until it reminds me (at 10pm).

When my abusive ex told me he was introducing a significant other to our DCs honestly I felt like I'd been punched in the stomach. I was single at the time & felt a bit 'it's not fair'. He was so fucking vile to me - how could he find a partner and I couldn't. But it passed and now I'm happily engaged.

@candylebonbon imagine how he is someone else's problem now. And imagine if you had a drink and then sent him a text or something 🤤 he might think you want him back urgh!!
I don't know about you all but I get a real sense of satisfaction pressing the "stayed dry button on the app. I tend to do it around now when I'm settled upstairs and set in for the night

OhioOhioOhio · 10/01/2021 21:43

Op how did you know that you were ready for a new relationship? That's partly why I'm off the drink. To get my head straight.

MintyCedric · 10/01/2021 21:56

@CandyLeBonBon

Sorry the news about your ex has made you feel. It's definitely understandable.

You are a better woman than me...I've had an absolute fucker of an evening with elderly parents and cracked open a bottle of Malbec Blush Sad

showmethegin · 10/01/2021 22:08

@Blessex I put mine in at midday. Gives my willpower a boost as once it's in it's in and in my head I can't change it!

showmethegin · 10/01/2021 22:09

First weekend done! Feel brilliant! Doesn't seem to bother me during the week so feel I might be able to do this now!

Blessex · 10/01/2021 22:37

@showmethegin that’s fantastic. Well done! I weirdly find weekends easier as during the week I am working so hard that at the end of the day I want a glass (bottle) of wine to unwind. Now my tough period starts again. Hence all the AF drinks lined up!!!

@MintyCedric I would blame the foot smelling AF Merlot for that blip. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Tomorrow is a new day.

theDudesmummy · 11/01/2021 07:38

I have set the notification for 7pm. That is when I would normally have my first glass, if I am going to have a drink. It is also around when DH will usually pour himself one. I have told myself that is when I will make my decision about what I am going to do, I am free to go either way...then I put in the dry notification and that is it...can't change my mind...it has worked so far.

I have woken with a very bad headache today and a couple of previous days. I am wondering whether it is the valerian, or maybe artificial sweetener, as I have been drinking diet ginger ale or tonic every night...I think I will try cutting that out, will have to try something else...
