We had a conversation about world affairs at dinner tonight and it left us all pretty bleak. I am going back to my policy of only skimming the news, it’s just unbearable.

Nc4 you are doing brilliantly, I bet you will start to feel great any day now. I hope the pillow spray works.

Frouby, reckon you’ll make it to Wednesday, it’s only tomorrow to go.

Longest, sympathy on whingy kids - half a bottle is moderating imo.

About to do some mindfulness and then will sleep. Sweet dreams everyone!

Accidentalaccountant · 07/01/2020 05:39

2 glasses last night. So better again than weekend. Not sure I even like the taste anymore. Just such a habit

Canshopwillshop · 07/01/2020 08:42

Sort of day 2 here but I might have cheated a bit as I had 2 small bottles of 2.5% lager which have 0.5 units each. I thought they might have a bit more taste than Becks Blue but not really. I woke a few times in the night but generally slept well and feel clear headed today. Got to walk the dog, clean the house and then have a Pilates class.

Waterandlemonjuice - I’m the same about the news. I only skim read as otherwise it’s just too depressing!

Frouby - I meant to say that we also had a family discussion about favourite meals. I get fed up of being moaned at for doing the same meals but no one else comes up with ideas! Tonight DD has declared she is cooking and has found a recipe and everything 😊

Accidentalaccountant - it is mainly about habit isn’t it? It is so ingrained in my routine and I really want to change my thinking. I have started reading the Allan Carr book again. I only got a third of the way through last time.

Have a good day everyone.

longestlurkerever · 07/01/2020 11:48

Nanny state is definitely the tastiest AF beer imo but not the cheapest, and Nature O wine but ditto. Somehow find it harder to justify the cost and calories even though it's less than the real thing. FML. Nanny state is worth it on those days where you are tempted though as it hits some of the same notes. Also cannabis tea!

Waterandlemonjuice · 07/01/2020 11:56

Hello all. Day 3 here, have claimed my teacup as I definitely won’t drink today. There’s no dry white wine in the house for a start, only various mixers and spirits. There is red wine but I can resist that.

I had a twinge while cooking last night but it passed. Definitely habit!

Slept for 8.5 hours and so far have done two loads of washing, put the dishwasher on and read the paper (depressing, so need to distract myself with kittens and suchlike for the rest of today). Ds agreed to come for a walk with me so I’m hoping to do that later while my cleaner is here.

Frouby · 07/01/2020 16:55

Twinges here too. Fml.

I am going to have a nice J20 shortly. It's vile, really sweet and sickly but it's so sweet it takes the edge off wanting beer I think.

Am bloody knackered. Big shop this morning, fridge full of lovely, healthy food to counteract the millions of tins of chocolate lying around. Sigh. Then did some cleaning and sorting and pottering around. Ate my soup even tho I really wanted a sarnie and did a couple of hours actual work. Urgh.

Now sat yawning on the sofa, wondering if dh will have his dinner at 6pm so I can go up to bed very, very early.

Wish me luck for staying dry. Will be day 3 of December if I can manage it.

longestlurkerever · 07/01/2020 17:49

Joining the wish me luck crew. Not as grumpy as yesterday but someone at work slightly took the piss with a tricky last minute request, needy friend is back on my case and andi have attempted the mother of all tidy ups but the place still looks a tip and there are still Christmas tree needles everywhere. On a positive note i have two leads on promising sounding handy people, rat superhero is back on the case (after marked absence of rodent for a couple of weeks i heard scratching again) and normal routine of school and clubs has resumed and is most welcome. So am aiming for AF but is touch and go. May have to deploy a nanny state.

Frouby · 07/01/2020 20:19

Did you make it through the witching hour longest? I did but only just. Had to take myself off for a shower, clean my teeth and then have glass of cordial with loads of ice. Eaten now so passed the dangerous hour. Off to bed very shortly with my kindle and a glass of water.

Been quite healthy food wise as well. Homemade chicken soup for lunch, prawn stif fry for dinner. No snacks or treats at all so far. Not saying it will stay that way due to all the god damn chocolate in the house still. Don't even particularly like quality street etc.

Was bought some hotel chocolat chocs by ndn for new years day dinner though. They were lush, darent look how much they are though. Probably too spendy for me. 😁

OP posts:
longestlurkerever · 07/01/2020 20:43

Still in the witching hour really as only just got dc off to bed and dh isn't downstairs yet. If he suggests wine i will probably cave. but AF so far, went to woodcraft folk. Throat is killing me though and making me want something to take the edge off. Well done on getting through!

Hotel Chocolat os lovely. They used to do offers where you got a giant box for £7 - you just had to remember to cancel the subscription when it went back to full price, but not seen one of those for ages.

I haven't been eating very healthily either.
Making lunch too ambitiously healthy (home made soup on its own) and then snacking on junk.

Dionysa · 07/01/2020 20:49

In the middle of things, but just registering a fail for the sake of completeness.

longestlurkerever · 07/01/2020 21:05

Made it through witching hour by skin of teeth so no judgment here Dion x

MadameF · 07/01/2020 21:12

Dion no time to post lots, just read, but I'm with you, not AF but 2 nights 2 glasses of wine so not even the usual minimum of half a bottle. As I'm getting up early to run 10 miles before work I don't feel too guilty. I also had a blood test recently which included B12 levels which are often decimated due to too much alcohol but mine are really strong. So no incentive to give up completely.
NC1 i use aged drops of essential lavender oil on bedsheets every night which helps with sleep. I hope your lavender things do too.
Well done to all of you who are AF I'm useless since being married.

Waterandlemonjuice · 07/01/2020 21:14

Oh no re your rat being back longest, I hope the rat man can deal with it. Eye roll for needy friend and pisstakers too.

Frouby, we still have chocolate everywhere, I ate several quality street this afternoon and not even the nice ones fgs! I may chuck the rest tomorrow.

Went for a nice walk with ds, had a nice calm afternoon but dd and ds had a row this evening fgs. All sorted now but very irritating. Day 3 done anyway.

Dionysa, I hope you're in the middle of nice things 🙂

Dionysa · 07/01/2020 21:23

Thank you water. No, not nice things - just shitty and ordinary!!

DC back to school tomorrow, though...

NC4Now · 07/01/2020 22:23

Normality returns then Dion!!
I'm annoyed at my Dry January app. It's glitched and hasn't given me a teacup. I'm on day 7 too which gets me some kind of badge. I've been ROBBED!!
Great work Frouby and Longest. I went to Body Combat during the witching hour which helped. We'll ignore the half pack of party rings I troughed when I got in - it's still only the same calories as a large glass of wine, and I've never only had one of those.
Hoping to actually sleep tonight. I've written about 3,000 words today. It's nuts - they used to give us 6 weeks to do that at uni 😂
I could really do with a WFH day tomorrow to get the rest of it done and clear up, but I've got an order in on a job, so it won't happen.
All kids and cats were in bed by 10pm tonight, and the Christmas recycling bin of shame is out,
At least it was in good company. It was like Wino's Alley down the ginnel behind my house tonight.

Waterandlemonjuice · 08/01/2020 11:09

NC4, can you download another app and retrospectively fill it in? I’d want my badge

Day 4 here if I don’t drink which I won’t, no white wine in the house. I stupidly bought sea bass and tuna steaks though and I’m not sure what I was thinking, I’ll want wine with them. Although there is also soup in the fridge so maybe I’ll freeze the sea bass and cook the tuna for dd. Sorry, you’re getting my stream of consciousness on dinner here!

Hoping ds will come for a walk with me again today. Feel a bit better than I did yesterday. Slept for 9 hours again so that’s good!

I hope everyone is ok. Where is badgerblu? If you’re reading I hope you’re ok. 🙂

Frouby · 08/01/2020 13:32

It will be day 4 for me as well water. Still undecided as I am either drinking today or tomorrow and then friday. Then not sure about saturday depends what we are doing and whether dh drinks. Am making thai curry Saturday so will probably have a wine or something.

Just had a really healthy salad for lunch. Still not thin though ffs. We are having fish as well, smoked haddock with new potatoes, veg and parsley sauce. Been to ponies this morning, BabyPony was very good considering she hasn't really worked for a month. No explosions which is always a good start.

Got ds swim lesson after school. Fucking hate swim lessons but boys are definitely easier than girls to get ready afterwards as you aren't fighting with long, wet hair on a cold, stroppy child.

OP posts:
NC4Now · 08/01/2020 14:07

It's given me my teacup!!!! No day 7 badge yet but maybe that will come later. Otherwise I'm reinstalling the app.

I don't miss swimming lessons. Well, apart from the dishy swim instructor 😅

Slept like a baby last night. I'm hoping that's a corner turned. Not eating brilliantly but logging stuff on My Fitness Pal. I'm sharing Frouby's annoyance at not being thin. I should at least be thinner. I'm not.

Well done to the Day 4 crew and beyond! And to the Day 1 crew too. You're still here and that counts.

Hope you are having a lovely back to school day Dion.

Waterandlemonjuice · 08/01/2020 15:00

Yay to teacups! I have mine too! That’s a lot of blank spaces to fill with teacups but I’m determined to do it.

I’ve only just showered Blush but have done some washing, made dh’s lunch for tomorrow, prepped supper, tidied the kitchen a bit, read the paper (I do not recommend, the news is just too terrifying) and I’m about to pop to Tesco as we need cat food. we are going to a funeral on Friday, (fairly distant relative but I was fond of him) dh said shall we stop somewhere for lunch on the way back and I said no as I will definitely want to drink.

Wankerbastards move to 2020. With moderatin' a plenty. We rage against flouncers, strops and teens, and of dryness we have big dreams. We want teacups not fuckups!
Frouby · 08/01/2020 17:04

Well I won't be dry tonight. Dd has dragonboat training tomorrow so will he dropping and collecting so won't be drinking tomorrow and 5 days would be just too much first week back on it I think.

Will be moderate though and only have 2 35ml gins.

OP posts:
longestlurkerever · 08/01/2020 21:43

Ditto Frouby. Have shared a bottle of v nice wine with dh. Some friends have said they manage moderation by upgrading their wine so they savour it more. My trouble is dh is a wine nerd and any wine we have in os so deliciously moreish! I could leave plonk more easily. Not going to open a second bottle though.

Improvementsunderway · 09/01/2020 07:28

Good morning!
Glad to hear there's been lots of AF days and moderation going on!
Im back to full on work mode and not loving it. The last 4 days ive done 2 AF and 2 with just 2 beers. So feeling alright about it. I find i wake up a million times and have nightmares when i dont drink... is that even normal? Arent you suposed to sleep better AF? Sucks because my main reason for a drink in the evening is to fall asleep faster (dont know how to switch off ) in spite of much meditation, aromatherapy etc.
Im thinking AF tonite to stay with the on off theme.. tried heineken 0.0 and was pleasantly surprised by the taste!

Frouby · 09/01/2020 09:46

improvements it takes me a good few nights AF to feel the benefits of improved sleep. I spend the first 2 or 3 nights up and down peeing plus weird dreams as well.

Stuck to 2 gins last night. Enjoyed them very much but will be AF tonight as am driving later to collect dd.

Blustery and cold and squally here so going to give ponies a miss and crack on with some work. Need to get dinner on for tonight (pulled beef, Yorkshire puds, veg and probably mashed potato because dh will cry if I don't) then drag the laptop out.

Nothing else to report. Feeling very pmty and waiting for period from hell to appear. Had cramps all week and now a day late so no doubt it will be biblical. Fml. Oh and have also put weight on despite no beer and reduced amounts of crap and a massive increase in veg. Am not sure if it's pmt bloating or just the last of the Christmas crap making it's presence known.

OP posts:
Waterandlemonjuice · 09/01/2020 14:02

Longest, that’s hard having a wine nerd dh, but half a bottle is moderating.

Improvements, I find it takes a few days of being AF to sleep better. You are also moderating

Frouby, I bet that’s all water and will go when your period starts

Day 5 AF here. Slept from midnight until 11am although woke as dd was getting up so had a cuddle with her at 7am but got back to sleep ok. I feel ok, in the swing of it really. My skin is shit though, I don’t look any better at all. Oh well, maybe that’ll take a while...

Waterandlemonjuice · 09/01/2020 14:05

We had the tuna steaks last night with mustard mash and broccoli and samphire and iced water. After the initial twinge (which was when I thought about what we were eating tbh, not when I was actually cooking it) having wine with it didn’t even cross my mind. So that’s progress I think.
