New thread for the New Year.

Support thread for those who want to moderate and reduce alcohol. Absolutely no judgement, just advice and support. Absolutely everyone is welcome whatever your goals or hopes for 2019.

Am no good at clicky linke but there are previous threads and we look forward to continuing to moderate and reduce in 2019.

Especially today. 14 coming for 3 courses at 3pm and I have a raging hangover to start the year. Fml.

Thanks Frouby.

Flossie44 · 03/02/2019 21:44

Frouby - I know what you mean about pub food..I’m always disappointed by it and feel it’s been reheated!! I love a home made roast..if only someone would cook it for me!!!!!

Dry here tonight. Wish I could be proud of it!! First dry night in months. But unfortunately it’s due to me having got so pissed last night that I think I’m still groggy!!

PurpleDinosaur · 03/02/2019 21:52

Hi all. I'm really wanting to cut down drinking. Drinking 4/5 nights a week, too much wine. I'm sick of groggy mornings and feeling lethargic the next day. Also worried about the health side of drinking too much. I'm hoping to start afresh tomorrow after a bit of a failed start to cutting down since the new year.

NC4Now · 03/02/2019 22:24

I love a roast dinner. I just hate the washing up. There’s a stall on our market that does Yorkshire pudding wraps, which is basically a giant Yorkshire with a full roast inside. And when you’re done, you just chuck the foil bag in the bin. Perfect!
I start a new job tomorrow. Well, a new freelance contract. It’s just a week with scope for more, but it’s full time office based, which is a tough gig for the feral creature I am.
So of course I’m drinking wine tonight.

NC4Now · 03/02/2019 22:27

Hi Dinosaur. I think it’s fair to say we’re not generally morning types here.
I’m planning on being AF till Friday now. I’ve overdone it this week, having felt generally more in control lately.

Flossie44 · 03/02/2019 22:31

Dinosaur - welcome. You’ve come to the right place for support

NC4 - good luck with the job. Office might be hard but you never know..it might lead to better things. Let us know how it goes.
Yorkshire pudding wrap - yummy!!

PurpleDinosaur · 03/02/2019 22:34

Hi nc4now, good luck with your new job and planned AF days. I've got an interview in a few weeks time for a promotion so lots of prep to do in the evenings and def need to be ditching the fuzzy head if I do get it. I've drunk tonight but hoping to start afresh tomorrow and do a whole week with no wine. Fingers crossed 🤞. My HB is up for it too which is good.

PurpleDinosaur · 03/02/2019 22:34

Thanks flossie44 x

MollysMummy2010 · 03/02/2019 22:36

Got to day 38, god knows how. Had a glass of wine with dinner tonight. I actually had one glass. I hadn’t wanted to test myself as I have never had an off switch with wine but I did it. I stopped at one. Think I will give it a while again now as I don’t want to slip back. Dry feb for me now I think.

longestlurkerever · 03/02/2019 22:38

Was supposed to be AF today but have been drinking wine. I do feel slightly less crap about things, but don't know if it's the wine, or chatting things through with DH and my friend, who I went swimming with. Start my new job tomorrow too. Bit worried i am going to be massively distracted now. Good luck NC4 xx

longestlurkerever · 03/02/2019 22:39

Welcome purple dinosaur and amazing Molly!

NC4Now · 03/02/2019 23:09

Ooh good luck longest. I’m guessing yours is an actual job which you’re committed to, rather than a ‘yeah, I’ll do a week and see how it goes’ job.
I’m also worried about being distracted. I went in for training on Weds but have forgotten it all already. Hope it comes back.
It’s ok. I can bluff being professional with my smart new winter coat.

PurpleDinosaur · 03/02/2019 23:14

What's everyone's top tips for AF days/weeks? Im learning to crochet so hoping that can keep me busy/mind off wine. I'm trying to exercise more too but tbh I find that makes it worse some days as I feel I 'deserve' a drink after exercising 🤔. I want to read more so going to try and do that too rather than mindless tv watching. HB just ordered 'the surprising enjoyment of being sober' (something like that anyway)....has anyone read it/is it any good? I've read a few stop drinking books but none have really made a difference. This one had good reviews though.

Anglaise1 · 04/02/2019 05:48

NC4 Longest good luck with your new jobs today! Flowers
and Longest well done on knocking 2mns off your park run, that's brilliant. Good motivation for running more Wink
NC4 I'm a morning person, I have to be getting up at 6am in the week to take DD to her bus and then run, that's why I hated drinking most evenings.
Welcome Purplle I really enjoyed the Catherine Gray book the Unexpected Joy of being sober, it was one of my two favourite AF books, William Porter being the other. Keep busy in the evening, crochet is a good idea, or clean a cupboard. I'm a sport addict so am out running or swimming (cycling when the evenings get longer)
My week was far too wet last week, around 3.5 bottles of wine so way over 10 units which I used to do.
Will try harder this week! Good luck to everyone on their Day 1s or more.

Flossie44 · 04/02/2019 06:59

Good luck NC4 and longest on your new jobs today x

NC4Now · 04/02/2019 07:21

Thanks everyone 😊
New week today. Slept awfully last night, so looking forward to some early AF nights.
Anglaise I would love to be a morning person. Even without wine in the evenings my brain doesn’t kick in to action for a few hours.

PurpleDinosaur · 04/02/2019 08:02

Thanks anglaise looking forward to that book arriving now, though think DH wants to read first.

Good luck to you today too longest.

Have a good Monday everyone. I slept terribly, really of 4 evenings drinking in a row I think and feeling bad about it. Drawing a line and starting afresh today. Really want to do a dry week. I've not done that since I was last pregnant 4 years ago (I'm so ashamed saying that).

Canshopwillshop · 04/02/2019 08:14

Morning everyone. Well that was a very boozy weekend and I’m not feeling great - slept badly etc. Definitely not drinking for the next few nights.

Purpledinosaur - I’ve found that AF wine and beer helps me to stay off the real stuff. Becks Blue and Natureo white are quite acceptable.

Mollysmummy - well done.

Also sending good luck for Longest and NC4 - hope the new jobs go well this week.

Flossie44 · 04/02/2019 08:39

Canshop- what does natureo taste like?? Never heard of it. All the af wine I’ve tasted, seem v sweet and squash like. Be interested to know....

Canshopwillshop · 04/02/2019 08:49

Flossie - it’s a muscat AF wine and not too sweet. DH thinks it has a slight elderflower taste to it. It needs to be very chilled though. I’ve tried quite a few AF wines and I agree that most of them are too sweet - this is the best I’ve come across. They do a red too but it’s horrible 🤢

Canshopwillshop · 04/02/2019 08:50

Oh by the way it’s made by Torres and I get it from Waitrose. I haven’t seen it elsewhere.

Dionysa · 04/02/2019 08:56

Canshop, I am so sorry for your losses. So many of us on this thread have suffered /are suffering in various ways, and I'm quite sure our reliance on alcohol is related to this.

Purple, welcome from me too. You have come to the right place. No shaming or judgement from anyone here. I meant last week to be dry, and the start of a whole new AF existence. I think I managed one day.

Good luck with the new jobs, Longest and NC4!

Flossie, I think I once read that hot tubs and alcohol were a very bad mix!!!

Anglaise, I'm a morning person as well (also get up to see DD off to school). I'd like to get up not feeling foggy, though...

Frouby, I want one of your roasts. Grin

Flossie44 · 04/02/2019 09:04

Dion - I’m with you..I want one of frouby’s roasts too!!

Frouby - in fact I want one of your roasts or currys. Your cooking always sounds so lovely!!

PurpleDinosaur · 04/02/2019 09:23

Thanks canshop. I usually only drink red wine and never found a good AF one but I'm def going to try that white you've suggested. I think I'll get some becks blue in for the weekend too.

I feel so crap today. Want to remind myself of this feeling when I waver 2-3 nights in to the week.... x

Anglaise1 · 04/02/2019 09:40

Purple take a close up selfie of your face today. If you feel bad you will probably look tired, your eyes will be dull and your skin won't be fresh, it may also be red and flushed with alcohol.
Often after just a few nights AF you will sleep better and your face will look better. Some of the before and after photos I've seen have been very motivating and I know I looked a lot better when I was only drinking 10 units a week.
I've posted this before but it might help!
