Do you have any weird rules in your household?

Mine is: nothing is allowed to be stored in the loft. Nothing. Not even Christmas decorations or suitcases.

I get the feeling that if just one thing is allowed to live in the attic, then all sorts of crap will be ‘stored’ there until we die.

Personally I don’t think it’s odd at all, but my DH thinks it’s utterly bananas.

Anyone else?

we also have the Monopoly ban in the house. Again, following an unfortunate incident with Fleet Street, a handful of hotels becoming airborne and an as yet unsolved pilfering of funds by bank staff

We don't get to bed sad or mad; it's an odd rule

Don’t speak a lot with me before I have at least 2 expressos in the morning

My main one is not to mis-spell espresso

That’s really odd ☺️. Surely that’s what lofts are for? I wouldn’t want the Xmas decorations or camping equipment cluttering up the actual house but each to their own.

Ours is having 2 food waste bins and beware getting them mixed up. One is for our compost heap and one is for the council. DH is very particular and gets upset if good compost material goes in the council food waste (my bad)

I don’t think it's weird having two food waste bins since you can’t compost cooked stuff/meat/gravy. If you want to compost stuff and you have food waste collection then there has to be some separation.

If someone is making tea for you, they're not allowed to make it in your cup? For me, I wouldn't want them using anything else.

I suspect that this refers to making tea in the pot only.

Big light in the living room only used in emergencies.

I hate having the big light on
With you on this. Sadly, DH missed the memo so we have constant light wars. I switch it off as soon as he leaves the room🤣🤣

We don’t store anything in our loft either.
But that’s because we live in Australia where we have pythons in our roof.

ChocolateCinderToffee · Yesterday 03:05

No shoes in the house and the cat must wipe his feet when he comes in if it’s raining. (I ensure this happens by putting some Dreamies on an old towel so he stops on it to eat them.)

Clip123 · Yesterday 04:39

I do realise I’m very odd but ‘rules’ are:
no shoes on in the house
wash hands as we come in
change into inside clothes, any clothes that have been worn outside either go in the laundry pile or on a dedicated rack to re-wear
all bags stored in under stairs cupboard, never put down on any surface
no food or drink upstairs
I think that’s it…. 🙈

also nothing in our loft, but we have a garage and everything is in there (seasonal decorations; suitcases etc)

No monopoly or Baileys. The last one is only me not allowed it

Baileys is the only thing that would make Monopoly bearable.

I think that is odd. Lofts are for storage in my book, especially of the "out of sight, out of mind" variety. 😎

I'm not aware I have any weird rules, but my three DDs would doubtless disagree.

My own parents did - they were the only ones allowed to be known by shortenings of their names was one, and our friends would be publicly corrected if they did it, which was cringeworthy.

Also, the car was never to be left parked on the drive. It always had to be put in the garage, which was not used for much other storage.

What do you mean? They were allowed to be known as Joe and Alli but you had to be known as Frederick and Victoria? Or that only they could call each other the shortenings?

I had a neighbour who was spoken of by his wife using the abbreviation but would always sign him in cards using his full name. I was never sure how we were meant to address him as suddenly using the abbreviation after the card(s) seemed suddenly over familiar, but it was a really commonly used name and other ppl called him it. Having said that, my partner calls me a shortened version of an abbreviation of my name and I always find it weird when his friends or ppl I don’t know well call me it, but it’s obv not their fault as that’s what they know me as through him. I guess it’s bc he never calls me the longer version so he doesn’t think to use it with other ppl. Still feels odd but not enough to ever correct somebody over.

Just moved into a new build and they don’t recommend much is stored in the loft, but I will probably have 1/4 boarded and a ladder as need somewhere for the Christmas tree at least. Do have a shed as no garage but that’s already filling up.

What are poo hands?

I'm guessing that 'poo hands' are a cheap alternative to toilet paper.

No singing or music??? How boring it must be at your houses. One of my biggest joys, when my children were young, was singing with them in the car .

I feel the same! And @CowCat children have to use headphones to listen. Just can’t imagine it.

bettyrubble99 · Yesterday 07:00

Never leave a kettle empty. I got it off my nan. She would be hopping mad if my grandad or one of us had made a drink and not filled it back up with fresh water.

No shoes in the house.
This maybe just my little obsession but if you've finished with the washer, dryer or dishwasher leave the door open for at least a hour before you shut it to allow it ot air out.

What sort of thing constitutes a Big Light Emergency?

Spiders. That is all.

seats are for bums not feets

all feelings are allowed, all behaviours are not

don't make tea in my cup

And tables are for glasses, not asses.

Missingducks · Yesterday 07:03

Do one thing to leave each room better than you found it - can be taking a mug / glass to dishwasher, taking laundry to utility room, cleaning the sink ... Just one tiny wee thing every time.

Eristealviper · Yesterday 07:31

Never interfere with a pet in its bed or whilst it’s eating its own meals.
Milk in mug 1st before tea (& coffee if poss), in reality only I can make my tea how I like it so stop offering me cups of tea/coffee.
If you want to speak to me come & find me, DONT shout at me & expect me to come to you -mostly aimed @ dH.

Justmemyselfandi999 · Yesterday 07:52

I have a friend who lives with her Mum in a very posh area. Mum insisted that friend, when shopping for a new car could only purchase black, white or silver. Any other colours were ghastly, common, and not to be parked on the drive!

Can't agree more! The no music one actually broke my heart. (well I married a professional musician so that was never going to be a problem in my house!).
Honestly one of the greatest joys of my life at the moment when my 6 year old goes to the toilet, because she spends about half an hour in there improvising the most extraordinary, surrealist songs you can imagine. It's like some weird experimental comtempory opera every day in my house. Me and my DH frequently cry with laughter. We live in an apartment block so God knows what the neighbours think 😂

EmeraldSlippers · Yesterday 08:11

Weird rule in my house - my DH is obsessed with protein, so every meal for the DC has to have a source of protein. He makes them eat a chunk of cheese every day at breakfast because porridge/yogurt is not enough! He frequently breaks an egg into his own porridge 😷. Luckily he does not try to impose this rule on me.

Bonkers! That's what lofts are for! Where do you store your Christmas stuff then?
