Do you have any weird rules in your household?

Mine is: nothing is allowed to be stored in the loft. Nothing. Not even Christmas decorations or suitcases.

I get the feeling that if just one thing is allowed to live in the attic, then all sorts of crap will be ‘stored’ there until we die.

Personally I don’t think it’s odd at all, but my DH thinks it’s utterly bananas.

Anyone else?

No other people permitted.

Gas Engineer gets an annual exemption, but that's it. Much easier to keep a neat, orderly, pleasant home without other human beings ruining it.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 06/10/2026 23:36

items in the loft must be in a lidded box or zip up storage bag. Though I never go up there. I have far too many boxes of decorations to think about storing them upstairs.

No shoes upstairs.
No phones at the dinner table.
all meals eaten at the table.
washing must come in before it gets dark.

We also have an empty loft. All the junk is dotted around the house. Most of it belongs to DH of course.

I too married a hoarder. 😞

What's in your loft then?!

This is going to be hugely outing to anyone who knows me, but we go screaming in the woods. My children are not allowed to scream in the car, house, or shops, or the street. We save it up until we go for a family walk in the woods and let it all out.

Good fun.

That’s great!

That’s not weird, that’s the law!!

When we moved into our current house a couple of years ago, the living room and bedrooms had no ‘big’ (i.e ceiling) lights. We spent ages choosing lights and getting our electrician to fit them as a priority.

Never switched them on since. Felt very wrong not to have a ‘main’ light. Feels even wronger to actually use it to illuminate the room.

TeaDrinkings · 06/10/2026 23:44

No power tools on a Sunday. Or hoover. Anything noisy basically. I work shifts, including some Sundays. Don't know why it's my thing. I just think it should be a quiet day I suppose.

99doubledeckerbuses · 06/10/2026 23:45

If you leave clothes on the floor, the cat will piss on it and it will be your problem to clean up

If you don't put the toilet roll on the holder the cat will kill it and you'll be cleaning up the mess.

Any money left in pockets that later on gets fished out of the washing machine becomes the Mum tax.

Stay out of my spice cupboard. Despite it looking like chaos unleashed I do have an order and I do know where to find things- turmeric is bottom shelf at the back left for example. DH once 'tidied' it up for me. I told him if he did it again I would cut his fingers off.

standandsip · 06/10/2026 23:52

What a waste of space.

Nlsa · 06/10/2026 23:53

I don't allow anything in the loft either. Christmas decs are in my wardrobe as I don't have that many clothes, but a decent sized built in wardrobe.

JanuaryLove · 06/10/2026 20:02

seats are for bums not feets

all feelings are allowed, all behaviours are not

don't make tea in my cup

@JanuaryLove
thats a fantastic phrase
“all feelings are allowed, all behaviours are not “ … really like that one

No bags ever on the kitchen table or work surfaces. Not shopping bags and especially not handbags. They might have just been on the floor in a public place - supermarket/shop, public toilet… my late in-laws used to do this whenever they visited and I had to remind them not to do it every time.
Also, the living room door must be kept closed so the cats can’t have unsupervised access - especially when it’s Cheistmas.
if you the last of the loo roll you must replace it with a new roll from the box.

@ClaudeHoppermy in laws have a little note on their loo saying everyone must sit down!! They have nine grandsons so…(but adults are supposed to too).

Best idea I ever heard about was someone who had urinals installed in their house. I think they had a lot of parties.

Friendlygingercat · Yesterday 00:16

I live alone and my rules are

no dogs or children.
no visitors on sunday

MrsAvocet · Yesterday 00:22

We have a holiday rule, started when the DC were very young, which is that everyone has to try at least one new food whilst on holiday. Originally it was intended to encourage the DC to be more adventurous with food in other countries but we still do it now they are grown up and even if it's just DH and I who are away.

No monopoly or Baileys. The last one is only me not allowed it

I HATE Monopoly. It's not allowed in out house.

craycray431 · Yesterday 00:27

No shoes inside, also this one might be strange to some - everyone showers at night. There is only one bathroom in a relatively small house, and mornings are chaotic enough without steam flowing everywhere, and everyone moaning and having to wait to brush teeth, do makeup etc. If anyone needs to shower in morning, they must be out of shower by 6:45.
This makes mornings much smoother.

ThisAutumnTown · Yesterday 00:27

No shoes in the house, wash your hands when you come inside (only for myself, DH and kids - not guests), No name calling, no screens during meals

Strawberrydelight78 · Yesterday 00:29

I wouldn’t call it a rule I’ve just never put anything in my loft. Mainly because as a child my dad was putting stuff in our loft and he put his foot through it. It was patched up but could still see where he put his foot through. My mum decided not to put anything in the loft after and i made the same decision. I just don’t want the same to happen to me. No I don’t own the house so can’t have the lift boarded to avoid such a misshap. There’s also what looks like a patch up job on my bedroom ceiling so it might have happened with previous tenants.

Thisismetooaswell · 06/10/2026 22:26

Sorry I think you're all barking mad

Yeah, there's some batshittery here for sure 🤣

Judystilldreamsofhorses · Yesterday 00:34

Don’t put it down, put it away.

This one is definitely only me, but I always say, “bye, I love you, you be good” to the cat when I leave the house or if I am last to bed.

MrsAvocet · Yesterday 00:36

No prawn cocktail crisps in the house. Anyone who wants to eat them has to go outside. The smell really makes me heave.

genuineflexor · Yesterday 00:42

No eating standing up or while wearing an outdoor coat.
Diners must sit symmetrically so in a 6 seater table with a seat at either end and two on the other sides facing each other,
3 must sit with two facing and one on the end closest to the other 2
4 must sit on the long middle bits so everyone is facing each other
This is after an incident when there was 4 of us dining and three of us sat facing each other and one madman decided the take the end seat. The level of discombobulation meant I was unable to eat and then there was a minor incident hence the rule.

suki1964 · Yesterday 00:45

Im working on the rule, dont love it, dont treasure it, dont use it - it goes

Dh has got around this by squirrelling away to his garages, only we are downsizing.

Im so not helping him
